I'd just like to see Shenmue 4 (and 5) released over the next 5 years, largely accepting the current fanbase levels (albeit with some ambition to increase sales). Then, 10 years from now, we can talk about remakes of the full series, by which time I would hope Shenmue will be more widely appreciated and respected. To be fair, I'm happy with any Shenmue content we can get but, most importantly, we need to get this full story told.

One of the things I like most about Shenmue is the continuity between games. Being able to bring over your save, the fact that characters look (mostly) the same from game to game, etc etc.
So with that in mind, I think a Shenmue 1+2 remake would be awesome, but in that case, make sure to patch Shenmue 3 so we can finally bring over a Shenmue 2 ending save.
Honestly, Shenmue (the series) should be able to be experienced as one continuous adventure and that really add so much.
Having said all this, I think they should focus on finishing the series, and remakes shouldn't be made unless the story is completed.

I appreciate the idea of Shenmue remakes ,just like Shenmue Zero as long as we don't lose focus on bringing back Shenmue 4. The latter should be the top priority in the Shenmue universe, other associated projects can wait.

I personally want a Shenmue Remake more than 4 or 5 or to finish the story. I would love so much to revisit Dobuita with new content and more exploring. That’s what Shenmue is to me. Exploring the small town, investigating its mysteries. That’s all I want.

The problem with FF7 Rebirth sales I belive it's because the FF brand in general was bloated with many recent releases with FF16 and FF14, not to mention other FF7 related games like Crisis Core and mobile games between 2023 and 2024.

Stylization can be done with color grading and lighting, closely matching the original game's palette. This way, you can keep photorealism while also keeping the classic Shenmue aesthetics. There is no need to have every single model stylized; that's just a hugely costly effort.

Shenmue was groundbreaking when it initially came out, and a potential remake could elevate it to new heights. If a remake is undertaken, I hope it will be a full-blown reboot. Here are some key improvements I envision for a modernized version:
    1. Enhanced RPG Elements: Incorporate choice-based dialogue akin to the Mass Effect trilogy. Choices could influence minor story elements without leading to multiple endings. For instance, selecting the right dialogue could expedite certain outcomes, or alternatively, bullying your way through could have world-altering consequences.
    2. Time and Weather Cycles: Retain the dynamic time and weather systems that added realism to the original game.
    3. Expanded Character and Social Development: Deepen relationships with characters like Nozomi and Ryo's friends. Include activities such as visiting the arcade together or going on dates, enhanced with mini-games and QTEs that depend on making the right dialogue choices.
    4. Larger, Detailed Map: Expand the game map slightly while maintaining a high level of detail. An open-zone design, rather than a fully open world, would preserve the game's intimate atmosphere.
    5. Random World Events: Maintain the random world events that made Shenmue unique, where you could miss cutscenes if not in the right place at the right time. Draw inspiration from games like Red Dead Redemption 2 for dynamic world-building.
    6. Improved Dialogue and Story: Update the dialogue and voice acting for a more engaging experience. While the original plot was fitting for 1999, it needs to be more complex and nuanced for a 2024 audience.
    7. NPC Schedules: Keep the detailed NPC schedules that added to the game's realism.
These elements were what made Shenmue great for me, and I imagine a modern Shenmue incorporating these features would be even more compelling.

I would do a faithful remake not touching anything besides the movement and camera. I would reuse what they did for Shenmue 3. Also I would make a new VO. The old one is just too compressed.
Maybe also add a wait-option just like Shenmue 2 had.
I just love Shenmue too much. I wouldn't want a remake to feel too different... :D

I think the forklift section in a possible Shenmue remake should be simply focused on the investigation part of things and less on the work side of things.

There should be the option to pick only the morning shift so you have the afternoon to investigate or, potentially, do other jobs around the harbor. Just like in Shenmue II where the crate job didn't take you the whole day.

I’m playing Shenmue 1 again on the ps5 and to be honest Im bored out my mind on the forklift stuff. You can spend a minimum of 5 working days driving the forklift if you active all the cutscenes correctly but that’s still roughly 5 hours real time of work 😮

agreed; when I was playing the xbox one edition of Shenmue 2 (2019?) I completely gave up on the full game when I got to moving wooden crates around ... when I originally played it on Dreamcast it was fine but today, that section aged like milk

It needs a remake with proper characterization (proper actor motion capture) between characters instead of acting like robots and having a combat system that's fluid and fun like the Segas Judgment games. They can compile the story of 1 to 3 in one big game. Animation and character detail needs to be proper and less anime like I think this is important. Puzzles can be still challenging and motivate aimless exploration for investigations.

    • @OverJumpRally
      @OverJumpRally Месяц назад +1

They should keep the chapters, that way is way less risky and allows you to have the first games out earlier. Then you can finance the rest of development with the income from those chapters. In fact, I'd even split Shenmue II in two separate games (Hong Kong and Kowloon), with the Guilin part connected to a Shenmue III remaster.
      Agree on the combat system!

Perhaps another hypothetical video is in order. We almost got our "Final Fantasy VII 'Rebirth'" in the form of the original Shenmue III -- with it's rumored fantasy-tinged setting. I'm very glad that they went the Shenmue II route and kept things real, with only the slightest hint of metaphysical abilities in the form of Shenhua's "mind-nudges" to keep things grounded, yet mystical. Ok. So my point is to maybe look into FF7R. See how it would relate to a Shenmue Remake. Perhaps discuss how it would be better to keep things fairly close to the original in the same manner than System Shock Remake did when it was released.

I mean, it worked alright for Yakuza, but that was following the successful zero. Still, a graphical overhaul and some qol improvements would be nice.

I'd love a remake but I think they would need to test the waters with a prequel first. Like you say, if the remake fails, then chances are we will never finish the story.
    Shenmue 0, onto 1 - 3 remakes then finish with 4 & 5.
Also I think in Shenmue remake giving players choice is key. Don't want to drive forklift every day for more info on the mad angels? How about an underground fight club or something? Plenty of options. I want it now!

No, Shenmue was a product of its time, that time has passed and you were lucky if you grew up in that era of gaming

Do you think a remake would bring in many new fans? I’m not sure it would have that much of an impact on today’s youth. The pacing is something I enjoy, it’s part of the immersion. I’m sure a creative team could improve in the original, but it would run the risk of changing YS original vision by appealing to a new generation of gamers.

Shenmue is also an investigation type of game which is the big difference between Yakuza/Like a Dragon games. Its important not to streamline it into being just an action game.

No thanks, I was happy with Shenmue HD but don’t want them to touch a classic.
But if I had to I would say add more side quests that involve Ryo friends and shop owners to develop his relationships with them.
Rather have a SEGA backing on Shenmue 4

Why could they not borrow aspects from modern gaming and not re ame the original Shenmue game?
