I remember thinking the QTE's in Resident Evil 4 were inspired by Shenmue when I first played it when it came out. In fact I think there was a magazine review article at the time that implied the same. Really hope we hear soon that Shenmue 4 is in development. Yu Suzuki seems confident and I have a good feeling that something will happen soon.
Two phrases come to mind in respect to Shenmue's legacy: History is written by the victors and Lost the battle but won the war. Shenmue released on a soon to be dead console and was greatly outsold by certain games on the PS2 (GTA3 and FFX for example). Because of this, those games and others on the PS2, get remembered over Shenmue for pushing the envelope of gaming in that era. However, while Shenmue and Sega lost the battle, Shenmue won the war. Shenmue influenced countless games and so many of the things it pioneered became standard in open world games (and other genres). Shenmue was groundbreaking and while it might not be remembered or celebrated the way it should, its legacy is assured through all the things video games now do because of it. And there will always be those of us who have played it and know.
Great analysis! CP2077 and RDR2 are two of my favorite games! Along with Shenmue, of course. Worth mentioning in RDR2 you have a notebook that works exactly like the one in Shenmue! Also, each NPC has its own daily cycle and there aren't repeated NPCs in the world.
The only games I would add are the ones from Quantic Dream. Those took different elements from Shenmue rather than the open world aspects, such as QTEs.
Tbh the game I’m currently playing rn (and the game I planned to play after I beat Shenmue 3) is Judgement. The Yakuza game spin-off, and honestly I’m enjoying the hell out of it. If future Shenmue games are a smidge more like Judgement or the Yakuza game series it be SO much cooler and badass.
Anything with QuickTime? Haha I kind of thing the large pockets of downtime in the persona series (from 3 on) had some familiarity to the long tines where there was no combat in shenmue. Maybe not deliberate, but another SEGA studio. 5 was the closest
It's looking likely from what Yu Suzuki said in a recent interview. He said he has a few partners interested so hopefully they will work something out soon and development can begin.
@@aryanalfa2444 I'm confident it will be an improvement over Shenmue 3. They have the feedback from Shenmue 3 plus Shenmue 3 was fan service so tried to stay as true to 1 and 2 as they could with the budget they had. Hopefully it has a better budget for Shenmue 4 and it should go further with what they already have in place from making Shenmue 3.

Please 🥺 I hope so 🙏
It surely deserves more respect
All I want is to see Shenmue 4+5+6 and the other two coming to light 🙏 let Yu fulfill his vision
I think shenmue is massive on the game world 🌎 I think shenmue showed people how an open world game should be
It did at the time, no doubt

It's funny because people who work in game development all acknowledge what it did.
Gamers don't and it's this really strange situation I feel.
That's totally true Shenmue was the first step on the AAA creation, first game had 70k of budged and it was groudbrealing at the time

Humans have changed since the 90s , attentions spans are not what they used to be .
To enjoy Shenmue you have to be introspective and cerebral..
So will we have a Shenmue 4
