Sir! I have no feedback for you this was a good discussion and one that I've had with myself for literal YEARS. I got shenmue for my 14th birthday for the Dreamcast (I didn't realize you guys in the US didn't get that system 😱). Alot of my friends growing up always said FF7 was their defining game, for it was Shenmue. This game literally was my life and I even use some of its philosophy and ideas to this day (I'm 35) like when my nephew's and nieces don't eat their vegetables I use the same speech Iwao gives Ryo 🤣. This game fundamentally shaped my personality and love for most things Eastern. I spent so many years playing this game soaking up the culture, history and lessons. I've never been invested in any game as much as I was this one. I've been hesitant to play shenmue III all these years later due to the all the negative stories I heard about it but after this video.. I'm now currently downloading it. It will be nice to jump back into it, at least I know not to expect any progression to the story.
I remember the first time I booted up Shenmue. I was like “Holy crap!” It was mind blowing to me lol It hasn’t aged well, sadly, but it was probably the most detailed game of its time. First game I remember seeing actual hair strands in instead of the clump of moss that served as hair in PS1/Saturn/N64 games. The fact that 3 didn’t close it the story has pretty much made me just give up on the franchise. Sure, I want to know what is up with Lan Di and the mirrors, and who the guy Ryo’s dad capped. But I feel like Yu is not going to give us those answers, just string us along.
I'm not a big anime fan either but I really enjoyed the Shenmue anime, and I had not even played Shenmue. I ended up buying the 1 & 2 bundle when it was on sale on PSN a while back. Another anime I would recommend, seeing as how you're a wrestling fan, is Tiger Mask W.
Really awesome video RGT 85. Shenmue 1&2 are dope, 3 is just ok overall but we need a Shenmue 4 Game too get the Story back on Track, rather than finishing off the Story in a Anime Series.
this is exactly what i feared when they announced Shenmue 3 by Yu and Mark Cerny for ps4... i always say on our facebook group 500k shenmue group... Yu Suzuki is already old, we are all getting old... my worries was and always will be... WE'LL ALL DIE WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT THE END IS... YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY...
Shenmue was amazing. I played both titles on the Dreamcast and absolutely loved them to bits. The world was so immersive and detailed at the time. It was way ahead of its time. Sadly it being released on a console that was doing badly, didn't do well for the game.
I feel the same way. I bought the 1 & 2 pack and the LRG CE of 3 and I feel screwed over by it. I would have felt much better about my purchase had 3 actually had closure. But this is the first time I felt screwed and I will not fall for something like this ever again.
Sega did this a lot. The 32X and Saturn really didn't help the Dreamcast. Sons shouldn't be judged by the sins of the father. I don't think most who backed it think that Shenmue 3 was worth the wait.
I remember fondly the build up to Shenmue 1 and being completely mesmerized once I finally got my hands on a copy for my Dreamcast. Shenmue 2 of course, a must purchase too, and I absolutely loved it; the scale, the exploration and storyline were top notch. I was hugely disappointed with Shenmue 3; it looked great... never understood why it was a PS exclusive considering it was released on Dreamcast (powered by Windows CE then ported to Xbox original). The story and gameplay was incredibly mundane, I tried seeing past it as I'm a Shenmue fanboy but found myself struggling with it. Personally I feel Yu Suzuki should call it a day with the franchise... we'll be waiting a while for the fourth installment anyway based on how long 3 took 😅
It's funny how Yakuza got remakes on PS4 of Yakuza Kimani and Kimani 2 and remastered versions of Yakuza 3, 4 and 5. Granted Yakuza isn't Shenmue but it totally feels like what Shenmue 3 should have been. I love Shenmue and Shenmue 2 and replaying them it's just feels that Yu Suzuki put his heart and soul into those games as he believed in them. Shenmue 3, was made for the fans of Shenmue and it certainly shows in the mechanics of the gameplay. I haven't watched the Anime though would definitely back a Shenmue movie.
I am a believer that sometimes you have to move on and just remember the good times. Shenmue was great back then but if it never moved with the times and it has to be left behind. There are still good games today that carry on its spirit.
shenmue is a one of a kind game and so special the atomosphere it creates is outstanding being a fan of marital arts the franchise hits different and just living that life as ryo is wonderful.
I get fans who grew up with Shenmue (I remember seeing it in magazines at the time) want more but since then, we've gotten Yakuza and Judgement which I guess was supposed to fill that void. I've never played Shenmue (I will eventually) and understand Yakuza and Judgement isn't Shenmue, but at least the Shenumue series lived on in sorts via those 2 games.
Great video RGT - I’ve been meaning to check out the remasters. I really loved Shenmue when it first came out & to this day haven’t played Shenmue II due to the reasons you mentioned.
Could a future re-release of Shenmue 3 fix the fighting mechanics by offering the choice between the two fighting styles upon starting a new game? Could one more quest be enough to fix the story? Regardless, the TV series is probably the best course of action to continue the story. But could a crossover with Yakuza help move the plot along?
Hope Shenmue 4 comes out. They should lesen what went wrong in shenmue 3 and use that to make shenmue 4 better. 3 was still a great game, but wasn’t enough to get new people to the series. Hope they can get more people to enjoy shenmue and finally see the end of the story. The Anime brought a few more peile to the series, but a new game would be better tho.
Its not happening. Listen to what Shawn said in the video. It's true; Shemnue was expensive to make. There's a reason why SEGA wanted NOTHING to do with the game. They didn't even fund Shenmue 3.
@@CarlosXPhone it could still happen since ys net made the game, not Sega. If enough people back shenmue 4 on Kickstarter, we might have a chance. As long as I get an ending to the story then that’s fine with me
@@Psmgamer yu Suzuki said he might do it if enough people want it, but ye probs no shenmue 4. The yakuza series has a better chance of getting another game cuz of how similar and popular it is to gta. Maybe they make a 3rd season in the shenmue anime which is shenmue 4’s story and they finally show us the ending, that would be fine with me
@@bamban_garcia5562 No joke, I would rather have no ending at all than an unsatisfactory one. Ending it in anime form would be incredibly unsatisfactory for me and probably put me off playing the games ever again.
@@hermityt1 I mean at that point Yu Suzuki should say its done or something since an anime will just piss people off while another title will just drag along the story even more
The only way to save this is to bring back the Yakuza creator to work in Shenmue. Shenmue is my favorite game of all time and I didn't even touch Shenmue 3, just by looking at it is an insult to what Shenmue was and is.
Not a bad video at all. Can see it is from a fan. A few things: Yu Suzuki chopped the chapters down from 16-11 and was intended to be 5-6 games maximum. Sony only put in funding towards marketing and publishing. A misconception that they funded a tonne of the development. Shenmue 3 had a difficult development, not a static budget, 70% of the development time spent on the games systems, fighting he couldn't access the VF systems and had to remake it. The tutorial was horrendous granted but you could practice your moves to improve your attack stats, your health stats were tied to the mini-games. Stamina system was actually mentioned in the DC days but agreed it was invasive. The story while mostly agreed lets be honest it isn't like nothing happens. Ryo has no mirrors at the end of the game, Niao Sun's reveal, her trying to kill Lan Di and the Chi Yu Men civil war. Despite its execution that's a major plot point. Also turning Shenmue into Yakuza isn't the answer. Great games but they are cousins and Shenmue would lose it's heart if it went that way in our view. The best thing that Shenmue 3 did was relaunch the franchise, got the re-releases and the Anime. Considering all of the above they had a really hard time and we'd trust YSNET to do a 4th game. The Anime is top notch, some great change-ups and hammered it. The Anime could end the story but even then Season 2 is in limbo as Warner Discovery merger is happening. Shenmue 3 would fill half the 2nd season of the Anime and they have plenty they can work on (see interviews with Jason Demarco). The story would be rushed in a 1 hour Anime despite Ryo's journey being mapped out already. Completely disagree a 1 hour Anime should end it. You'd miss a mass of Ryo's development, the side characters, the journey, all of it.
Shawn I love you brother. I dont necessarily agree with all points but I do def feel similar on some accounts. I loved shenmue 3 but sadly the series' future is unknown. However I can say that the story is indeed done. The core story has been completed up to chapter 11 which Yu Suzuki confirmed recently in an interview from the documentary. However not sure many people saw that interview yet. I hope you been well. Hope to see you at a convention again soon!
I 100% agree with you on pretty much everything. The fighting in Shenmue 3 was a clear step back, the stamina was annoying, and overall the story didn't go anywhere. I also thought about Yu Suzuki needing to complete the story with the anime, but that shouldn't be it. If fans don't want to experience this way, this is what I'd do: - Using Unreal Engine 5 and its amazing libraries (along with Sketchfab, CGtrader, and Quixel), you can remake Yokosuka environment pretty quickly and more importantly, really cheaply. Trust me on this, I've been remaking Sega Rally by myself while learning it. A small team can really do wonders. - With that environment, you use it for TWO projects that both that place there: Shenmue Zero (starring a younger Iwao Hazuki and Zhao, Lan Di's father), and then Shenmue Kiwami, literally a remake of the first Shenmue in UE5. This is the same formula that worked with Yakuza, both in terms of rebooting the first chapters and then reusing the same environment to save money. You could also reuse a lot of coding/animations from Shenmue 3 since it was done in Unreal Engine 4. Yes, you can reuse A LOT from UE4 to UE5. Pretty much everything, to be honest. - Then, hoping these two games have some success, you move forward and redo Hong Kong and Kowloon, which you can use for the sequel of Shenmue 0 and for Shenmue Kiwami 2. Same for Shenmue 3, which it gets a bit of restyle from UE4 to UE5 (graphically was already good, tbh). - You then finish the saga using this formula, which again you can use for both Iwao's and Ryo's stories, since they both take place in the same environments. Again, it's important that you finish to tell the story via the anime first, so fans won't complain that you go back in the past instead of moving forward. I believe telling Iwao's story can be truly fascinating, especially since you'd go back in a post-war Japan (Yokosuka had American Navy base influence that surely created a lot of tension). Perhaps you could even play as a younger Lan Di at some point! Or at least as his father, just like you play as Majima in Yakuza Zero.
Nice Video Big Fan of Shenmue too, and I really love Shenmue III It is way better than waht I thought, and I am replaying it on the steam desck right now, still great :)
You are right! So many hours with this franchise. My mom used to watch me play this game because it was so lifelike and great for the time lol. And we get no conclusion.......I feel you bro
Shenmue was amazing when it came out, the sequal was spectacular in every way. Shenmue III was not what we all hoped for, it lacked the serious dramaturgy of its predecessors. It was uninspired and very predictable.
Best feature of shenmue 3 was being able to call tom, goro, nazumi. It was like calling back my childhood nostalgia and seeing how an old friend was doing. Literally teared 🥲
Excellent video, RGT! I enjoyed the first two Shenmue games and I agree with you that this series should have a proper conclusion. Hopefully, this can happen one day. It would be great to see more videos like this one, going forward. Thank you for all your awesome work that you do!
I’ll watch this video all day long dude. Love it when you see a little Shenmue love. I’m a MASSIVE Shenmue fan. Finished the first one again last month. The first two games blow my mind. Truly. I was a backer of S3. Went in with a decent tier. Even bought a PS4 for the game and tho I’m glad S3 was made and enjoyed it very much it’s hard to argue with the points you made. The stamina bar is by far the worst thing they could have done. Really hated that. Also the fighting system was a little lazy. Should have kept the old one. As for the story. It was lacking. Would not have been so bad if a S4 was going to happen. Oh well. Anyway always love an opportunity to talk SHENMUE
Great video. Been a fan of the series since I was a child. Glad I found this video even though I'm late. I enjoyed the anime and if this franchise lives on, I would like to see it finished as an anime.
I bought and beat 1 and haven't started 2 yet on Xbox360 or 1 or whatever. Was perry fun. Thought this would get more tomb raider esc based on some of the starting pieces. It also feels like a celebration of culture so much packed into the game. Lol
Long time viewer of your channel, but first time commenting. As a huge Shenmue fan (my favourite video game series ever), it pains me to admit it, but you nailed it with your thoughts in this video. After the shambles that was Shenmue 3, even if they did start another Kickstarter (or something similar) to fund Shenmue 4, personally I would hold off from contributing to it this time around, which is something I never thought I'd find myself saying when it comes to Shenmue. The anime was really good and is the natural successor and the perfect way to end the series, in my opinion
Great video dude! Shenmue is one of my favorite series. I feel the same way about Shenmue 3. While it was decent, I wish it pushed the story more. Yu Suzuki needs to wrap things up lol. Would like to see more videos like this 👍
It's the third game already and Ryo still having trouble landing hits on Landi. I think Ryo probably won't be able to beat Landi until maybe the 5th or 6th game if Yu Suzuki is still even alive to get that far in the story by then.
Sometimes I feel like I can't connect with your content because it includes comments like "I might get cancelled for this" or w/e, but then you make videos like this, and like the retro collecting video, and I wish I could watch so much more of it. Thanks for this video.
I still need to beat the 2nd game. But did by the movie. Also S3 should have covered like books 3 and 4. Maybe even 5... as a PS3 game should have covered more ground and been able to be longer... also Shenmu set in the like world or rage play style of Fable is what people likely wanted. Not a billion times better but slightly smoother open world.
I got the first and second shenmue games on the Xbox one and my first instance of knowing about shenmue was when I opened a xbox case and it mentioned shenmue 2 then later i played one of my demo discs which had shenmue 2 on it i played it and liked it because the combat system is similar to tekken and virtua fighter (which was made by the same director who made virtua fighter Yu Suzuki!)
Gotta get the money, Shenmue. Gotta pick up all the flowers So that you can go to the store And find out That you don't even have the right herbs man, it took me so long to get these! Just give me money, man!
I really enjoyed this topic. I loved Shenmue 1 & 2 when it came out on Dreamcast and X-Box. However, the Yakuza and Judgement franchises are just way better. Shenmue need to rest in peace. Think about it, even Sega had no interest in continuing that franchise. I was so disappointed they didn't just conclude the story to Shenmue.
For the fact it took a little more than nearly 20 years afterwards (Shenmue II) leading us to this unsatisfied moment in gaming history EVER (MAJOR LET DOWN) ...regardless of how messy this situation developed into with the 3rd installment has not diminished my love for this classic revolutionary gaming piece of history. Maybe one day will truly have our revenge for the death of Ryo's Father
The wait for Shenmue 3 reminds me of the wait for the final season of Samurai Jack, especially the "Time has lost its effect on me." But hey, at least Samurai Jack got its ending.
More vids like this would be awesome. News and commentary is cool and all but this format is fire, especially with Sega since the company has so many ups and downs, there's a lot of stories to be told.

They did get the system. What they didn't get was shenmue 2 on it. They had to wait for the oh Xbox port to play it
@@Thoushaltplaymore we could import... (download and burn to disc)
I remember the first time I booted up Shenmue. I was like “Holy crap!”
It was mind blowing to me lol
It hasn’t aged well, sadly, but it was probably the most detailed game of its time.
My favorite game of all time, man we need to see the conclusion of this game. Maybe Shenmue 4 or 5
this is exactly what i feared when they announced Shenmue 3 by Yu and Mark Cerny for ps4... i always say on our facebook group 500k shenmue group... Yu Suzuki is already old, we are all getting old... my worries was and always will be... WE'LL ALL DIE WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT THE END IS... YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY...
RGT 85........I love you brother! Shenmue is one of my favorite top 3 games of all times!!
Shenmue was amazing. I played both titles on the Dreamcast and absolutely loved them to bits. The world was so immersive and detailed at the time. It was way ahead of its time. Sadly it being released on a console that was doing badly, didn't do well for the game.
Shenmue 2 on the original Xbox was great though, I thought it played best on the Xbox.
Real chads play Shenmue.
I'd like them to go back to the location of the first game. I wanna hang in the streets of dobuita and sakuragoaka once more....
Yep. Agreed
Sleeping Dogs feels like Shenmue, wish it got a sequel.
I just finished shenmue 3....I feel like my life has no purpose till 4 comes out..jk...but seriously I need more
yea the stamina system was my biggest problem with 3, still havent finished it but planning on it
The stamina system is a huge turn off. Still plan on finishing Shenmue 3.
shenmue is a one of a kind game and so special the atomosphere it creates is outstanding being a fan of marital arts the franchise hits different and just living that life as ryo is wonderful.
I loved it on Dreamcast.
The game is a masterpiece.
It really not the same. I'm also not bias I played Shenmue for frist time in 2020 and loved it
@@SkitBitProduction I'll get around to it eventually
Great video RGT - I’ve been meaning to check out the remasters. I really loved Shenmue when it first came out & to this day haven’t played Shenmue II due to the reasons you mentioned.
Could a future re-release of Shenmue 3 fix the fighting mechanics by offering the choice between the two fighting styles upon starting a new game? Could one more quest be enough to fix the story? Regardless, the TV series is probably the best course of action to continue the story. But could a crossover with Yakuza help move the plot along?
If they adapt Shenmue 3 into the anime it'd have to be a one hour ova.
As long as I get an ending to the story then that’s fine with me
I given up hope on Shenmue 4 unless some miracle happens.
@@Psmgamer yu Suzuki said he might do it if enough people want it, but ye probs no shenmue 4. The yakuza series has a better chance of getting another game cuz of how similar and popular it is to gta. Maybe they make a 3rd season in the shenmue anime which is shenmue 4’s story and they finally show us the ending, that would be fine with me
I downloaded all 3 shenmu games when they were on sale on psn. It will be my first time playing it ever. Sure hope I like it.
This guy is nuts. Shenmue is a game first and foremost and I'm behind Yu Suzuki all the way!
Are you honestly fine with receiving cliffhangers for almost 10 games without the actual story being finished
A few things:
Yu Suzuki chopped the chapters down from 16-11 and was intended to be 5-6 games maximum.
Shenmue 3 needed a "Where's the Sailors?" Minigame.
I 100% agree with you on pretty much everything. The fighting in Shenmue 3 was a clear step back, the stamina was annoying, and overall the story didn't go anywhere.
I also thought about Yu Suzuki needing to complete the story with the anime, but that shouldn't be it. If fans don't want to experience this way, this is what I'd do:
- Using Unreal Engine 5 and its amazing libraries (along with Sketchfab, CGtrader, and Quixel), you can remake Yokosuka environment pretty quickly and more importantly, really cheaply.
Nice Video
Big Fan of Shenmue too, and I really love Shenmue III
It is way better than waht I thought, and I am replaying it on the steam desck right now, still great :)
As much as I want the ending within any means possible, I would still prefer the ending within a Shenmue 4 even though that is a low possibility
Bro I watch it because I support your cause. And I dig your style. Not because I truly care about the content matter. At least for this video that is.
You are right! So many hours with this franchise. My mom used to watch me play this game because it was so lifelike and great for the time lol. And we get no conclusion.......I feel you bro
I enjoyed playing Shenmue 1 & 2 on the Dreamcast. Some very inspirational games.
I hope we get the ending of the story someday.
This is the line that separates kids playing videogames and real mature gamers with expertise and passion.
Video says no stream and won’t work when I retry
Having issues playing this vid bud. Don’t know what’s up. Says “No stream. Tap to retry”
Same here
*fixed now*
Shenmue was amazing when it came out, the sequal was spectacular in every way. Shenmue III was not what we all hoped for, it lacked the serious dramaturgy of its predecessors. It was uninspired and very predictable.
Shenmue is fuckin awesome! Glad you talked about this RGT
Best feature of shenmue 3 was being able to call tom, goro, nazumi. It was like calling back my childhood nostalgia and seeing how an old friend was doing. Literally teared 🥲
The best video i haver ever seen about Shenmue's downfall, shenmue 1 will always have a special place in my heart.
Excellent video, RGT! I enjoyed the first two Shenmue games and I agree with you that this series should have a proper conclusion. Hopefully, this can happen one day. It would be great to see more videos like this one, going forward. Thank you for all your awesome work that you do!
I get what you are saying and the anime is great but no it has to come from Yu Suzuki in a game, I waited since 2001 for Shenmue III I will wait for 4
I’ll watch this video all day long dude.
Shenmue is amazing
This is really good video, I always try explain the impact and rise and fall. This sums it up
I love that you made this. It was needed
OMG! Loved this history type of narrative video. Keep up the good work RGT !
I think Shenmue 4 is still possible but it likely needs to be the final chapter so it will need both modern improvements and go big!
I liked this style of video man. Would love to have more like this on some other games. Great video.
Sometimes I feel like I can't connect with your content because it includes comments like "I might get cancelled for this" or w/e, but then you make videos like this, and like the retro collecting video, and I wish I could watch so much more of it. Thanks for this video.
Shenmue has so much potential such a good franchise
Loved this vid! More would be great! Wish Sucker Punch could take a shot at Shenmue.
Broooooski….. this game…. One for the record books. Shenmue Dreamcast 4ever
i like the random game video, i know ur mostly news. but its cool when you go off that and talk about random games and series like this.
Stop it RGT85! You're gonna make me cry 😭😭😭😭😭
My buddy used to miss work to go to work in shenmue
Bro what an awesome video. Would love to hear your taught a on the MGS franchise
Shenmue I & II are among my top 10 favorite games of all time. I hated Shenmue III though lol.
Never played. Might try it out
I still need to beat the 2nd game.
Heart broken it needs to be a 4 I beat 1 2 and 3 one of the best games of all time. Lan di smh he is to dope
Gotta pick up all the flowers
So that you can go to the store
And find out
That you don't even have the right herbs man, it took me so long to get these! Just give me money, man!
I am definitely gonna need a guide for those flowers.
I watched it right to the end qaulity content from one content creator to another nice job
Dreamcast was way ahead of its time
For the fact it took a little more than nearly 20 years afterwards (Shenmue II) leading us to this unsatisfied moment in gaming history EVER (MAJOR LET DOWN) ...regardless of how messy this situation developed into with the 3rd installment has not diminished my love for this classic revolutionary gaming piece of history.
Maybe one day will truly have our revenge for the death of Ryo's Father
I never tried the shenmue series of games maybe I'll finally give it a try
I’d love to hear Adam Koralik views on this video and how he’d end Shenmue. Also I think it’s time you get Pecker DuPree on the show.
