Those "shapes" on the psx controller buttons are japanese train signals (i.e. the signs on the side of the track). Given that trains have a special place in japanese culture, these signs didn't count as such a big design stunt.
That's interesting, I'll have to look into that. Whenever I researched the topic, I'd find interviews with the controllers designer saying that the shapes were meant to be easy to intuit on their own. O and X being "yes" and "no" makes sense, but the other two are a bit more abstract. Triangle is meant to represent pointing or viewpoint (i.e. camera controls), while Square represents paper or documents (i.e. menus). It's not complete nonsense, but I can say from experience that a lot of people back then needed time to adjust to PS1's button layout.
@@GamingintheAM0801 Yep, I got the PSX at launch and those buttons were... just as amazing as they were confusing. Unfortunately i couldn't find the source with the train signals again myself, damn... Great video btw! Makes me real tempted to dust off some classics.
I still have all my magazines talking about the upcoming PlayStation home console. Mortal Kombat 3’s arcade port was the selling point for me. Along with games like Ridge Racer, Loaded, Twisted Metal, Resident Evil and Castlevania SOTN made me a forever gamer!
The Saturn's cd music player was excellent, and I've only ever played with one better interface (the Nuon). Also the laser was a lot more reliable than the PS1s (from personal use).
Nintendo had the prototype for some Mario 64 moves in Donkey Kong 94 on the gameboy. Still crazy pulling of those moves with limited controls of a gameboy. Kind like a jump into a handstand to get the triplejump move.
The Walkman was a portable cassette player where as the GameBoy was a portable games console. I appreciate they were both portable but that aside they were very different products
Great video man! Keep up the good work. Stay consistent. I lost a lot of traction in my channel cause I quit making videos! Literally as you said “who can forget Gex?” I internally said “OH MAN, I forgot about that one!!” 😂
It's coming up for sure. I'm doing my games chronologically, and as soon as I get to my earliest Saturn game (coming up in 1996), I'll talk about the console as well. I did that with NES, Game Boy, Game Gear, and SNES as well (and Genesis to a lesser extent), but PS1 was the first one to be its own dedicated video. (Every video in this series also features an after-credits stinger to hint what's next... 😉 )
Ah yes the classic PlayStation 1 experience, what face button shall be confirm or back today. Try and disregard any and all muscle memory, (insert game) knows how it should really be layed out!
One of those times where I can say 'we were here when this video had less than 1000 views.' Your essay skills are top notch and you're going to be very successful from here on out. Great video 👍
"Under capitalism, corporations are not friends": are you implying that corporations or govt organizations are friends under socialism instead? Many people on RUclips seem to think history before 1990 doesn't exist.
9:15 dude i grew up with the SNES and the PS1, the ❌⏹️🔺⭕ button layout was not confusing at the time, it felt futuristic and easy to understand, the PlayStation yoke style controller was unique, like no other controller before it.. not at all like the SNES controller. Just saying
I grew up in that era as well, and I remember there being an adjustment period for a lot of people when it came to memorizing those shapes. The designer of the controller also said they used the SNES controller as the basis; a leftover from when it was still a joint Sony-Nintendo console. It's not a bad controller by any means! Those grips do a lot of heavy lifting in making the controller feel unique. But it clearly took inspiration from Nintendo.
This was it, this was the time, forget the ps2, the ps1 had the most innovative and creative games compared to what came after it With too many multi console ports and pc ports.
One of those videos you watch and then become surprised when you see the view count once it's over. Hope you blow up!

Shame about the library
"One of the first games, period, to feature a fully orchestrated soundtrack". Wait...wasn't the PC Engine cd doing that back in like 1989?
the Saturn playing music cos sound 100x better that the Playstation.
Amazing video. Hope you’re planning on making a video on the PS2s first year
2001 was an incredible year for gaming in general. I'll for sure be spending a lot of time on it.
This was good stuff. Informative and some entertaining clips of gameplay. I hope you make it

Cool video! BTW the symbols on the controller represents yes, no, stop and play. Source: some other video I saw

The Saturn battery backup lasts for years not months.
Good video.
is the Sega Saturn next?

The Sega Saturn is not our future
Nice video man, surprised I'm the first to comment. I watched the whole thing while waiting at the dentist.

Sorry N64…. We beat you

PS1 honestly felt like it was getting a new killer app every other week.
Ugh
Ugh
