the restriction to the number of returns is quite interesting. So, they push us to buy more stuff, prices have become obnoxious, quality is inconsistent, unpredictable from pics and worse with every release. But the consumer should be more responsible with their orders and limit the returns. It'll be interesting to see how it works out. What will happen to the current business model if people start to buy much less stuff?

well, we all should be buying less stuff. I don't think that's a hot take to say so. and perhaps some restrictions on returns will mean people scrutinize those purchases more. if you understand a brand to have inconsistent quality, why buy from them in the first place?and anyway, we live in an era where many high- (and mid- and low-) price items have reviews online that enable a person to make an informed decision. and frankly - do you want to buy something that someone returned? cassie didn't get into it, but a big part of the problem here is that people are returning stuff they've used! the bans aren't targeting good faith customers who are figuring out sizing, or for whom some pieces just didn't work out, it's really about egregious haulers who buy tons and return tons and possibly wear some of it.

If I am being honest, I’m starting to hate Chanel as a brand. I think their items are cute but I find them way too greedy and for that, I will only buy them off the resale market now. Chanel as a brand is so annoying and they don’t care about their customers whatsoever. They sell crooked poor quality bags and show every single time they don’t like their customer base. They only care about profit and that’s all. They’re also extremely controlling.

Maybe more eastern countries where it still can have this status? I know a lady from china that bought exactly same chanel bag in paris and new york and was proud to tell it. What i think is interesting about chanel is that they have bought many many artisians companies that would not be able to still exist nowadays (wool, embroidery, etc). Like cool, you don’t like resellers, but if I get a bunch of pieces from my grandmother or something, I don’t want to be treated like a pariah for using and wearing them. I also feel like looking down on vintage in general would be a bad look for the company as it will alienate a lot of lifelong customers who see their pieces as investment pieces worth passing down

So many questions… In EU it’s illegal for them to ban returns made online.
But of course, if used, you shouldn’t be able to get back your money. Luisa via Roma has a nice way of dealing with it with tags that run through the entire clothing piece. No way you can leave the house without it being visible :)

So many will actually wear an item and return it because they think it’s uncomfortable, the fabric is itchy, parts maybe a little too tight or loose, basically things you should have figured out while trying it on before leaving the house. When I worked at bath&body works, customers will literally return candles that have been used and burnt all the way to the bottom because they didn’t like the smell or it gave them a headache. lol This is all party the companies fault because they perpetuated the whole “customer is always right” idea. i just don't get why they are overshooting soo much. also how will they handle eu customers, will they implement different policies? seems unlikely, adding additional procedures within a system is always a bad idea, makes things more complicated than they need to be. or will they just pray to dear god that no eu customers sue them? or just not sell to eu citizens anymore? but then again it's a huge part of an already not that big consumer base.
just idk... but aso can't really find additional info on this, so it might just be overblown?

The problem with high end luxury is that they want it both ways. Back in the day, I mean from 1900's up until about 1990's, luxury fashion was for the higher end client. By this I mean higher incomes and slightly older people that had more disposable income. This meant their pool of people were much smaller and therefore I can imagine the income made by these companies were less. It was all quality and exclusivity. However, in the last few decades that changed. Luxury became more accessible. To me, this started in the 1990's when a lot of fashion houses started diffusion lines for the more moderate income which drew people in and slowly the diffusion lines closed because the mainstream started buying the main line. The people they used to advertise their products were more mainstream, like music stars or young up and coming actors. It was only supermodels and the odd very famous actress modelling for fashion houses when I was younger. Now with this larger pool of people buying their products, comes more income. At some point last year the owner of LVMH overtook Elon Musk and Jeff Bazos as the richest man in the world, so they are making a lot of money. I remember in the 80's many of these fashion houses face bankruptcy. So the problem they now face is, they want to go back to the exclusivity days, but this means a smaller pool of people, so less income. But the way in which they advertise their products suggests they are still advertising to the mainstream.

Chanel prices every time u blink there is a price increase. However, I don't think the quality work is the same like it was back in the day. If I spend that amount on a bag it has to be the right color, & size. Therefore, less chance of a return. That's Cassies for this info. Very interesting.

Thanks for following up on the Chanel vs. WGACA case. Will be interesting to see how this affects the industry.
The returns situation will also be very interesting to watch. Many people don't live near various retail establishments. So they have no choice but to order many different sizes in order to see what fits. Also- even if you live close to various retail establishments, many don't carry extended sizes so you still have to order online. Basically, nowadays the brick and mortar stores are essentially just for returns because the size, color, and style assortments are only available online. So l don't know why retailers are having issues with returns when they created the problem themselves. I have gone to so many different Saks stores that are not the NYC flagship and most of the SA's walk around with devices saying that they can ORDER everything for you because the stores don't really have any stock. There are so many 2 or 3 level stores that have been reduced to 1 level stores because they don't have the merchandise to fill the stores. Nordstrom used to be known for their huge Ladies shoe departments. Now they have these huge spaces that look like ballrooms because they don't have the merchandise to fill them.

I work at old Navy in Oklahoma . People buy online and return products at the time saying it didn't fit right. It is frustrating sometimes because some of the clothing we don't have in store that they bring back. Final sale items old navy doesn't take back. Like the other day a older woman came in our store and wanted to return some clothes and when I scanned them they were final sale and the woman couldn't understand why we couldn't take them back because they where bought as Christmas gift. So to make long story short my manager refund her money . To keep her happy.

Thanks for the info. I’ll do some research on my own since I have a law background and the case seems interesting. One comment - you said Chanel doesn’t like the resale market etc. I don’t think this is necessarily true. I think it’s more a case of Chanel doesn’t like a business that makes money by using their property (trademark) without paying for it. Regarding pros such as Christian (who I love) using the return policy as an integral part of his business - I think the same thing holds true. There is a cost to doing returns by individuals/nonprofessionals that is built into the cost of the product but the cost does not include the high volume returns of pros. There may not be a feasible (cost effective) cost structure for pros. Also high volume returns may include people who buy, use and return items. Theft may be part of the problem.

Chanel is just mad that people would rather get a good deal on the resale market than buy new in the boutiques. The quality of the older pieces from the brand are mostly better. They're to worried about profit margins than they are about the customer experience. Also, with those unimaginative and abysmal shows Virginie has been producing for the house there is no reason to shop new Channel.

Stylists and legit influencers need to have a "pro" or business account in stores. Lots of volume bought, lots of returns, but you aren't the average consumer, so you won't get banned, unless you are returning damaged goods. Same in other industries. A special designation makes sense amd especially if you are moving a lot of inventory for them. If you buy 20 garments and return 19, but you sell hundreds of items from those 20 you should on socials, I think the stores would thank you and gladly accept your high volume returns.

The ban for too many returns isn't new, The Outnet has been doing that for a while. Not sure if it's a lifetime ban but I remember seeing something about it on their site a few years back. Excessive returns is a major issue for e-commerce because it's not just people returning things that don't fit or they don't like the item in person. People order, knowing they don't intend to keep all the items whereas instore you can try items on, feel the fabric etc without making a purchase so you're more likely to keep what you buy.

From a consumer perspective, posting reviews of our purchases is really more important than I realized . I had to trust my instincts and size up one full size on a pair of Tan-go platforms. Most reviews, very few, posted true to size which was not the case for me. Reviews of sizing may help to reduce a portion of returns. I say this since the items I’ve returned were due to sizing and were exchanged.

The lifetime bans piss me off so much bc I’m an x-small (men’s) and shops don’t carry my size in store (or very few), so if I want to get something I have to buy online and I’m not going to buy things without trying them on first, just because the size is right doesn’t mean the fit is, or the color works, or even just the texture. So I order a bunch to try at home and return what doesn’t fit (to the physical store when possible to reduce shipping). If brands don’t want me to do that, then they have to give me another option, I’m not shopping blind

When I worked with school codes, I would download a hard copy to make it easier to write reports. The voided codes are out there someone has to "find" them. Chanel certainly has a copy...... just not a public copy.

A lot of retailers (non luxury especially) have this restriction on returns and I think it’s great in terms of respect for the brand/sales associate. How many influencers have bought things just to show and then go around and return it?? It’s just the times that we are in, no?? “Look at what I bought” or “I bought this just to show you but I don’t really like it and it will probably be returned” “I bought this just to make a video about it” We are all so caught up in trends that we hop on them and buy the latest bag or clothes but go around and return because we aren’t thinking about whether something will work for us or not. We are no longer taking the time to go into stores and try on a piece of clothing before making the purchase. It’s easier to buy multiple sizes and just return the one that doesn’t fit because we are in the comfort of our own home. We are also all now conditioned to buy something just to be part of a trend and not really from the perspective of “will this work with my style” or “can I see myself wearing this over and over again”. Also, a lot of retails base their employees performance on returns. If your sales have a high rate of return, you aren’t performing well or as expected…”yeah, you are selling more but your rate of return is also really high” which is a bad thing…you can’t stop people from returning things but with people taking advantage of buy and return, it’s affecting the people who have legit reason for returning something…Anyway I can go on and on about this…especially about the resale market but that’s a whole other beast 😂
    Great video Ca$$ie!! 🎉👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

As a plus person, and there are virtually no brick and mortar stores to shop at, so almost all shopping has to be done online, as well as the fact that universal sizing is a bloody joke (not just in plus shopping), this returns things might backfire for some retailers. I try not to buy to much as I know most returns don't actually go back to the stores and end up in landfill, but in one of my favorite shops I can fit into 3 different sizes. sometimes the same pants in a different color I'm a different size. Its maddening! get rid of vanity sizing and set a universal sizing standard, and it will help a lot of the returns issues. I also understand this is really more for trying to stop people from wearing then returning items. shopping is already hard enough as it is (but damn its fun lol).

I think the returns policy is kind of annoying but I can see why companies are starting to do that. Unfortunately, when people take advantage of the returns, everyone has to suffer the consequences when the returns get out of hand.
As far as Chanel, it's just basically a company that doesn't want their customers to purchase anywhere else than their boutiques. They don't monetarily profit from second-hand purchases, so of course they don't want second-hand companies to sell their goods. I can see that they are worried about fakes though - and unfortunately, every luxury brand faces those issues.

Sizing is a very real problem. Barring, as others have mentioned, standardized sizing, brands need to provide the actual measurements of each item to the seller for posting. Those measurements could be standardized ie bust 1" below the armpit, sleeve length from middle of back to end of sleeve, front and back length. With those four measurements consumers could easily tell which size would fit and a lot of returns would be eliminated.

  • @haranamasha
    @haranamasha 8 месяцев назад

The ban after returns would be very ableist. As a disabled person I rely heavily on online shopping and don’t always have the option to go to a shop to try things on. Perhaps if brands are so worried about this they should actually make sure their size charts are accurate and trustworthy for a start 😅

There are already websites that record the amount of retuns, i think it is mostly dependant on how much money you end up spending. Like butinh a lot, returning a lot, instead just buying and returning everything.
For the rest it is a technology question, i think many ways to make a client more informed on sizing/fitting - 3d scans, exact measurements, pics of different bodytypes/sizes etc. The problem is that probably what these websites will save on useless returns they will have to spend on extra processing and photoshoots.they must make it super automated to make it work :)

The sustainability aspect of these things are crazy.
We're already not meeting climate goals and considering how toxic the chrome tanning process is (something I think all handbag enjoyers should read up on!) for the environment,
not being able to purchase the second hand bags and having to buy new is going to have a really really high impact on the climate. Even disposing of the leather bags is a safety concern as burning them releases chromium, and they can't be composted (it's not really biodegradeable). About 90% of all leather made is chrome tanned.

I was banned from shopping online with Nordstrom's Rack years ago because of too many returns. I purchased for myself, kids, parents, etc. items in multiple sizes and styles and returned what didn't work. No heads up or warning, just banned, and yeah, no way to dispute it. Because the nearest one is over an hour away I rarely ever shop there anymore. Also, most retailers have more items available online than in store so they're encouraging online shopping. I've been told by stores associates that there are more returns from online than in person shopping and if that's the case then that's a risk the retailers take.
