Supergood video and music! I was in West- and EastBerlin in 1990, and has always been fascinated by the history of the german separation and the wall. I have watched this video probably 100 times, it always touches me. Great video!
Been living in Berlin about 5 months now, plan to stay here for a long time. Every day I wake up and I still can't believe I live in this incredible city.
That was in the early fase of the wall. These houses where standing exactly on the border of the GDR and the DDR. All the houses on the border were demolished to be replaced by the actual wall.
You will probably hate my opinion, but i miss the Berlin wall. For me it was a teenage adventure going there in the mid 80,s, a bizarre place. Now its just another big city.
@KanonXD : i think it was conrad schumann, a soldier from east germany who was guarding the berlin wall in its third day of construction. people from west called him and saked him to jump the wire - and so he did. you can find more information about him on wikipedia.
Gorbatsjov seemed like one of tha main catalysts in the bringing down of the wall. Possibly even *the* main person. Thanks for correcting me in the increasingly part :)
@Superchickenman159 That an east German falling from one of houses close to the border into the west part...later those windows were boarded up and the wall of the house was basically a part of the wall itself. At 1:20 you see one of the few successful escape tunnels. Over the years many people manged to flee successfull (some had really crazy methods), but even more died or ended up in prison for years.
I feel so sorry for the people of East Germany, having to go through the war and not just that, then live in a giant prison for years afterwards. It must have been so depressing behind the iron, boring, no-life, stagnant curtain.
@Xiolablu3 I don't if you'd get shot, but if anyone wants to leave Cuba, they need a lot of money and have to go through a ridiculously long process, not to mention it's practically illegal to leave the country, let alone visit it. Did you know they still drive vintage cars? Nothing moves in and out of place. The Berlin Wall eventually came down, but Cuba's still suffering.
Ah! I'm bound to come across the same people on similar videos! And just as well I found you, I have another book recommedation for you. 'Stasiland' by Anna Funder. It's more about the Stasi investigations that went on during the time of the wall. Really interesting read!
49 years ago a shadow raised between west and east germany. in 1989 that shadow was lifted. to this day germany is a united nation, and the world finally became united.
i can't even try to imagine how hard it was for germans to live this way. to live like a stranger and like a prisoner in your own country... we must never let this happen again. never.
@scvs2 There are some who ran to the other side. There's one guy in the military who crossed when the wall was just a low fence with barbed wire on it. Jumped right over. Idk who put the wall up, or if it was a joint effort, but russia put all the things for people trying to get across to the east side. all the spikes and stuff
I agree, Jerusalem is something above any other. But can you even imagine to wake up one morning in your city, come out to buy papers and find a big wall which will next 28 years separate you from your friends, family, things that you like....and destroy your life. How many destinies have been destroied that way? I know there is a many cities whose suffered, but this wall made Berlin for a symbol of human pain and agony. That s why i said Berlin is the key witness of 20th century.
@scvs2= I know I'll get trolled for this. The West side was good. Of course, there were good people in the east. Berlin has become more beautiful since then. I got to visit someday.
@Xiolablu3 Perhaps you should research Vietnam and Cuba, on both occasions the US blatantly ignored an violated basic human rights. Honecker, the one who built the Berlin Wall was hardly a good man, the situation varied from country to country.
Pepressive, yes. But not increasingly. After Stalin, it didn't got worse, and since 1985, Gorbatsjov started his "glasnost & perestrojka" policy that gradually started to give Soviet citizens more freedom. He's the most important person when it comes down on bringing the wall down. Too bad he couldn't finish his work before the professional drunk Jeltsin made his appearance.
Korea is'nt comparable to Germany as much as we wished it were. While S. Korea has progressive ideas of tech development, the Koreas are not culturally ready yet... Even if reuni is possible, S. Korea is too selfish to take on the economic costs of bring the N. up to speed. I say it would it would be hugely beneficial to take the N. and put them to work. Not only would it be one Korea, it would be richer in human capital, the very 1 thing Korea values the most as natural resources are nill.
You got me wrong! I didn´t say that Berlin has ˝caused˝ the most evil and injury, i said that he ENDURED it. My point is that Berlin and Berliners are the victims of sinister empires.
@scvs2 basically, there was communism on one side of germany, and the opposite on the other side, so they put a wall up to separate these differences. of course, people on the west side were lucky as it was not communist. there really was no good side either, they both were equal and didn't want a wall to segregate them.
@scvs2 The soviet union occupied the east side of germany post-wwii while america, france, and britain occupied the west side of germany. Each country aided in the reconstruction of Germany, America was promoting capitalist ideals while the soviets were promoting communism
Supergood video and music! I was in West- and EastBerlin in 1990, and has always been fascinated by the history of the german separation and the wall. I have watched this video probably 100 times, it always touches me. Great video!
One of the greatest videos on the Berlin Wall I've ever seen. The music really helps to produce a gritty and sincere portrayal of the cold war.
Been living in Berlin about 5 months now, plan to stay here for a long time. Every day I wake up and I still can't believe I live in this incredible city.
2.59 i got all teary. studying this in modern history now.
The song of the title is Conquest of Paradise. Thumbs this up, so everyone could see it. c:
That was in the early fase of the wall. These houses where standing exactly on the border of the GDR and the DDR. All the houses on the border were demolished to be replaced by the actual wall.
god it's so touching. i cry every time when i see it.
I think this video is really sad at the start and really nice in the end! Nice
very good vid. i realy like the music you used.
I am glad i wasnt there at that time.
Greetz from the netherlands :D
You will probably hate my opinion, but i miss the Berlin wall. For me it was a teenage adventure going there in the mid 80,s, a bizarre place. Now its just another big city.
Thanks.
Music: Conquest Of Paradise by Vangelis.
Great video!!!
Two words...to remenber:
"Ich bin ein Berliner" J.F.K.
"Tear down the wall!" P.F.
Allons, Didier! Que de propos intelligents et nuancés!
Freedom is something that one must want... NOT what others want for you.....
@KanonXD : i think it was conrad schumann, a soldier from east germany who was guarding the berlin wall in its third day of construction. people from west called him and saked him to jump the wire - and so he did. you can find more information about him on wikipedia.
That's just an untrue urban legend. Kennedy's statement is both grammatically correct and perfectly idiomatic, and cannot be misunderstood in context.
this video always makes me cry. so touching.
the song is... " Vangelis - conquest of paradise "
The nearest you would probably find to the Berlin Wall today would be the 20'-30' high peace lines in Belfasts interface areas in Northern Ireland
Gorbatsjov seemed like one of tha main catalysts in the bringing down of the wall. Possibly even *the* main person. Thanks for correcting me in the increasingly part :)
@atosafi1 This music is actually by Vangelis a
Greek musician who wrote this music for the movie 1942 Conquest of Paradise, nothing to with persia.
Nice video, though I think the celebrations are not from the new year but the day of the reunification of Germany at 3 October 1990
The fotage in the end is from New years eve 1990...
This video is great
Timothy, I was hoping to use this video for my project. Would it be okay if I did? I just didn't want to get a copyright infringement.
Lessons of freedom, life, love and truth from the Berlin Wall 1961 - 1989. See RUclips video "The Berlin Wall Simplified".
@Superchickenman159 That an east German falling from one of houses close to the border into the west part...later those windows were boarded up and the wall of the house was basically a part of the wall itself. Yes, Vangelis made it. But the name is "Conquest of Paradise".
There's nothing like FREEDOM...!!!!
Oops you are right. Instead of GDR I meant of course the Federal Republic of Germany. Thanks for pointing this blatant error out.
Conquest of paradise. Vangelis. From the movie 1492.
I feel so sorry for the people of East Germany, having to go through the war and not just that, then live in a giant prison for years afterwards. It must have been so depressing behind the iron, boring, no-life, stagnant curtain.
can someone tell me the name of the soundtrack in this video? its amazing!
This song is from Daniel Hůlka - Ráj...
@aptulla I was there. I must have missed the bits that were fine.
Is this film from a documentary? if yes, which one?
Oh i feel so sorry for the people who lived there. Must have been Hell..
Is there any city in the history of men who endured so much evil and injury as Berlin was?
This city is the key witness of 20. century.
quick question... at 0:56, the soldier running is deserting or chasing someone?
Ah! I'm bound to come across the same people on similar videos! And just as well I found you, I have another book recommedation for you. 'Stasiland' by Anna Funder. It's more about the Stasi investigations that went on during the time of the wall. Really interesting read!
@SUGKUG West Berlin did have at atmosphere in the 1980s that it no longer has!
wow they filmed the soldiers jumping i tought that it was only pictures that existed
49 years ago a shadow raised between west and east germany. in 1989 that shadow was lifted. to this day germany is a united nation, and the world finally became united.
@Screch So who put up the wall east or west? And when they did build the wall how come people didnt run to the good other side?
I sing 0:00 - 0:39 of this song whenever I get pizza
Conquest of paradise.
Ey people can someone tell me what the name of the song in the beginning is.. Thnaks :D
what's the name of the music?
Now we are not enemies nor friends, we are family :D

The U.S. has its own Berlin Wall, the Brownsville Wall, and it's time it came down. Google "Megamerge Dissolution Solution" to read how.

i can't even try to imagine how hard it was for germans to live this way. to live like a stranger and like a prisoner in your own country... we must never let this happen again.

@jazzythegreatest well... the soviet union was there until 1991
@anka2468 The USA has not walled in Cuba. Cubans can leave - if their country lets them.
@mef83 Not just the brain drain, the refugee exodus from the country was untenable.
I guess these houses were a part of the wall. Maybe these people tried to flee through it.
After two wars lost, and two republics, germany is a great country again, the way they rebuild from the ashes always changes the history.
I agree, Jerusalem is something above any other.

@jazzythegreatest Wasn't Russia allied with the France, Britain, US etc? Why did they they block off east?
@Ghero03
Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis
it was my pleasure. :)
fuck, if you look at the world, look at its history, you will realised, we fucked ourselves up
can someone tell me why there was a Wall between the two countries? Who was the good side?
@scvs2= I know I'll get trolled for this. The West side was good. Of course, there were good people in the east. Berlin has become more beautiful since then. I got to visit someday.
Ok. When did they domolished them? Was it nice buildings they destroyed?
@evaliaro He later committed suicide. Tragic story, but he was brave.
indeed.
this anthen is beatiful ! what is that ?
@Xiolablu3 Perhaps you should research Vietnam and Cuba, on both occasions the US blatantly ignored an violated basic human rights. Honecker, the one who built the Berlin Wall was hardly a good man, the situation varied from country to country.
:_) que final más bonito
@jazzythegreatest Well there is still North and South Korea.
Go to Wikipedia and write "Ich bin ein Berliner". Im too tired to explain twice.

Pepressive, yes. But not increasingly. After Stalin, it didn't got worse, and since 1985, Gorbatsjov started his "glasnost & perestrojka" policy that gradually started to give Soviet citizens more freedom. Or something like this, i don't know :D
FREEDOM FOR MY BELOVED GERMANY :)
Korea is'nt comparable to Germany as much as we wished it were. While S. Korea has progressive ideas of tech development, the Koreas are not culturally ready yet...

@scvs2 The soviet union occupied the east side of germany post-wwii while america, france, and britain occupied the west side of germany. Each country aided in the reconstruction of Germany, America was promoting capitalist ideals while the soviets were promoting communism
