    My oil was dark after the change and I was about to go back to the shop that changed my oil to complain, but I might relax after watching this. Interstingly, I have two diesels and the other one still has has clear oil after a few weeks since the oil change.

    Great explanation but i would have to differ with you on the reason. While you are correct of all of the oil properties, you are correct about the dieselengine compression being higher and you are correct about the soot; the reason is not clear. The true reason and taking in count the above is that when you start the engine in the morning the components like the piston rings are not at operating temperatures, they are cold, this allows combustion by product (soot) during the power stroke to go by the piston rings and in to the oil sump making the oil dark almost since the firat time you start the engine with new oil. After operating for some minutes, the piston rings expand and creat a better seal in the combustion chamber therefore combustion byproduct will not enter the oil sump. The cause is thermal expansion. Good video.

      @Simon-dm8zv 9 месяцев назад +2

      But the same thermal expansion happens in petrol engines right?

    • @bepacman
      @bepacman 9 месяцев назад +1

      @Simon-dm8zv Yes, but the petrol engines inefficiency makes it warm up faster, and combustion happens more rapidly, heating all elements quicker making piston rings seal faster, I would not define combustion as cleaner on the petrol engine but it does not have the amount of soot generated in the compression fired Diesel engine, unless excess petrol is being burnt but even then, but even then its not as much soot as diesel. Both combustion processes are completely different but do the same work, rotate the crankshaft.

    Great video, especially the comparison of 3 different oils' colour on the paper towels. However, you didn't get much use out of the transparent sump after all the effort of making it. Please could you do a video of the transparent sump with the engine running at different speeds (and also measure how many mm the oil level drops when the engine starts, and when the engine is running at higher rpm)?

    I have a 7.3l Powerstroke diesel engine in my truck and it doesn't get near that dark after 3-5 thousand miles. I will change it and it doesn't get colored until 3k miles and when I change it why will my oil stay clean. I think I have a very rear motor that it will not get filthy like the rest of them.
