- In this video I head to the Australian Alps to hike the notorious Viking circuit. I decide to do the full 4 days as a traditional swagman using oldschool camping gear. I'm joined by Mattsy from @TheSillySwagman and get to show him the amazing scenery we have in the Victorian High Country.

As a fellow Aussie bloke that has recently turned his life around and becone sober, this is bewutiful mate, almost brought tears to my eyes how absolutely beautiful and stunning my country is, i have also started up a youtube channel and camping/hiking/fishing has taken up my life, thank you for this masterpiece brother ❤
Thanks for the comment mate. Well done as well, that is not an easy thing to do, more power to you mate, and really stoked to here the outdoors has been a way to help you turn your life around! Get out there and enjoy it mate ..
@@TheBeardedBushranger no worries at all brother :) glad I can across your channel!
I watched the silly swagman and now yours. Mate full credit to you both for that adventure guys especially yourself carrying swagman gear. Brilliant stuff.
Cheers mate thanks heaps for watching. Yeah I love the swagman gear and I feel I've got it down to a point it's not too uncomfortable. Mattsys vid was great .. camping comedy at its finest
What memories. Did the same circuit with my bro and dad 20 years ago and stopped for a minute silence half way up The Viking for Remembrance Day. 👍
Thanks for watching. That's pretty special you got to do it 20 years ago, and also on remembrance day. Something about doing these hikes on those special days that gives you perspective.
21:40 That's part of the Geelong Grammar School Timbertop's outdoors programme. Students are required to leave cards at checkpoints like that so the accompanying staff can keep track of when students arrive and depart certain locations along the track.
Great video!! Amazing hike.
Yeah I've since had more info on the school and I love the idea of what they try and install into young fellas.
GGS has both females and males. Each hike group has to fill in the log books. Has to be done correctly as well. If it’s wrong the whole group will get a punishment run or extra hike. (Got my share of punishment runs and extra hike) was lucky enough to spend my year 9 there. Still love the outdoors.
Mate, that bottle belongs to Geelong Grammar School - Timbertop Campus. All year 9 students have to attend Timbertop ( outdoor education campus) as a right of passage to year 10. They are stationed there for the whole year with no days off other than school holidays. They hike 3.5 to 4 per week and academic work the rest of the week along with running in the mornings, service to others, boarding and no hot water (chop wood for the boiler to get hot water). It is an awesome concept building responsibility, respect, resilience and long-life relationships.
I used to work there - I loved it but my ex wife didn’t like it at all. King Charles attended Timbertop for 9 months.
Great video 🙏🤙
That honestly sounds like a great experience for a year 9 student! Way to invest in a whole different range of skill sets for them.
Thanks for watching.
That’s amazing thanks. Don’t listen to women mate, coz they REALLY don’t make the right decisions brother.
Luke, thanks so much for sharing this with us. What absolutely incredibly scenery. The editing and musical choices too are just sublime. I’m so grateful to have been brought along for this journey.
Thank you for encouragment! I love hearing comments like this as always motives me to continue creating! Thank you.
That looked like an awesome experience, never realized AUS had mountains like that . Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the next adventure.
It's even more epic in the winter when covered in snow. Hopefully I'll get out there this winter. Thanks for watching
This presentation is possibly THE best I have seen. I’ve been watching all, internationally and varied. This adventure is unique. You two have good chemistry, relaxing, friendly and entertaining. Thank you. Oh, the scenery and photography…….amazing.
Great trip. You 2 guys remind me what me my mark were doing 30 years ago in the rainforest mountains around Tully FNQ. I lost that adventure and now at 62 getting back into the adventure. 😊
Great to hear your getting back into it. FNQ is certainly a wild place. I got to explore a bit of it in my early 20's. Thanks for watching.
Thankyou for treading lightly on such a beautiful and fragile country/ ecosystem.
Its sad to think what might happen to this beutiful part of the world as the clinate changes.
Yeah it is important. I know there are some hikers who would not even have a fire up there because of their concern (which is understanable) ... but I gather if sticking to an existing fire place (so I don't create another fire scar) and only using dead wood that is not hollow (to not disturb habitat) it should be ok. But you are right, it's important to care for the place.
🎶👌🎵🎥📸💪 EPIC. Watching for the 3rd time 🙌
Great stuff mate as always and with Mattsy motivating to get back out on the tracks! Cheers!
Good to hear mate! Get out there!
This was magnificent! Thanks for making and sharing. 🙏👍
Cheers mate, thanks for watching.
That was epic my friends! Thanks for sharing😎
And thank you for watching!!
Well done boys. Fantastic adventure, scenery and general content. Luke this is by far your best yet. Great work mate. Thank you for bringing this to us 🙏
Thanks for that comment damien. Really appreciate it.
What an incredible place. We felt it all with you. Such a challenging and rewarding track. Loved every minute.
Thank you so much for watching and your comment. It really was a great challenge this walk.
Great hike made more enjoyable with the two of you working as a team ... always fascinated at how different your videos come out when you've done the same walk. Good to see the maps and navigation explained a bit!
Watched Mattsy first and had wondered about those old straps, good on you for going old style. Thanks Luke
Thanks for watching! It really is interesting coming back from a collab trip and seeing how they edited the trip from their perspective. Mattsy is a great guy to do trips with.
Thanks for filming! Great watch
And cheers to you for watching it.
That was epic, especially with old swagman gear.
Cheers mate, thanks for watching
I’m here cuz of the silly swagman. This was fun to watch.
Cheers, thanks for watching. Was great doing this trip with Mattsy
Thoroughly enjoy your vids. Gosh we are so lucky to have the Victorian wilderness. Used to hike often, just may do it again. Congrats on a ripper production
For sure, get into it. We have so much to offer here in Vic
That was a ripper adventure Luke, thanks for taking us along. That country side and mountain views where bloody awesome. Having a mate like the Mattsy along would have made it a even more interesting trip. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Yeah Mattsy has that unique ability to just make every situation seem like a laugh.
What an awesome hike and record of that hike. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this!
Thanks for watching the vid!
Great vid mate, some very epic scenery.
Cheers mate thanks for watching.
Great video. Well done with the old school gear. My favourite walk of all time. Glad you enjoyed it so much!
Yeah the cross cut is one of the best walks to do! Thanks for watching.
Awesome video Luke - inspiring and fun at the same time - what an amazing part of this country - and pretty close to our back door!!! thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Glenn! It really is a beautiful spot.
Lovely vid mate look forward to future story’s you bring to us
Cheers mate! Hope your enjoying your travels
Hey mate, my guess for the Nalgene cache would be something to do with Geelong Grammar Timbertop School. They're located to the west near Merrijig and are pretty active around the bluff and Howitt.
Oh cheers mate, yeah that makes total sense .. was fun reading the little notes they left in the bottle
Nice trip. Well done on pushing through, you guys made it look easy🤙
Honestly we were really buggered at the end of this hike. The last 3 hours was hell, I couldn't even whip up the energy to film most of it haha Thanks for watching.
Awesome Luke! Gutsy effort and bloody great inspiring watch on a Sunday morning
Glad you enjoyed the video mate. It was a cracker to just get stuck into.
Truly wonderful hike …… I believe your best video yet , well done Luke!!! A great companion in Mattsy , he seems like a top bloke….! No doubt about the Australian bush - the vastness , the colours , the warmth and just so much natural beauty that rolls on and on ……!!😊
Thanks for that. Mattsy really is a legend and great fun to hike / camp with. And I agge the colors of the high country really are great.
What a pair of legends. Great video mate.
Cheers mate! Was good fun doing this with Mattsy
That was epic. Great content. Well done on such a great treck
Cheers mate!
Great to see you and Mattsy out doing what the two of you do best, exploring the Aussie bush. Excellent.
He is such a character to go out camping with! Did you watch his latest shipwrecked video .. the man is fulls of laughs 😂
@@TheBeardedBushranger Yes enjoyed it thoroughly. Please keep making more. As a 68 year old who still tries to get out there and do some bushwalking , you two blokes make my day and I appreciate the time you put into making great videos.
@@waynemcmillan5970 I really appreciate hearing that, and it's great to know our videos can give you a little taste of that joy of getting out bush
Hi. I never stop enjoying the nature of Australia. Thank you for the video !
I love that I have people from other countries able to enjoy our Australian wilderness through my videos! Thanks for watching.
Stunning - some beautiful cinematography there, and incredible effort from you both for another great adventure, showing me how wonderful that region is.
Thanks heaps for watching @Fiona_Chasing_Light .. it was a bloody ripper of a adventure!
Epic adventure guys😊
Loved watching this✌🏼
Thanks for watching!
Exhilarating and inspiring! The high country is like stepping into history ❤❤❤
Yeah especially when you get out to all the old huts. Thanks for watching.
Epic, you guys are an inspiration Thankyou so much!
Cheers, thank you for watching.
What a ripper mate , should be proud and such an enjoyable watch , congrats you two , and thanks for bringing us along 👍🏼
Cheers mate, thanks for watching .. it's a longer vid as well so I'm glad people have enjoyed it.
Nice.
That's a pretty specky area. Haven't been there in about 15yrs. Used to snoop about there. Its only a tough walking for the uninitiated and those who generally follow tracks.
Love the Gantner Hut, used to do some maintenance on it, the tracks and "the loo with a view"
There used to be a Mount Buggery sighn up there.
I was honked by a big stag on Mount buggery late one afternoon. The cloud cover was low and thick. And i was moving slowly and quietly, scared the crap out of me.
Also had it snow a couple of times a few days either side of Christmas up there while training , teaching navigation to staff.
Thanks for watching
Best adventure yet Luke keep up the uploads I love seeing your adventures
Cheers mate. I'll be trying to upload once a week (or once every 2 weeks) this year.
Honestly upload at your own pace Luke
Well I'm very inspired. Beautiful bit of Australia and great determination. Thanks.
Cheers thanks for watching.
Fantastic! So glad I found you via Scottie and Swagman. You two were a joy to hike with. This old Texas lady really appreciates your beautiful country and the joy of hiking with you. Thanks so much for sharing your trip here.
Thanks for watching. Really glad I could share some of the joys of hiking with you.
Awesome job Boys, loved your style it content and videography, hanging to see more trips now, thanks
Cheers thanks mate. I have plenty more content coming out this year.
Just back off a long hike myself with my daughter and ready to hit the sack. Looking forward to this one at sun up 👍
Enjoy your rest
The Timber Top cache(bottle) will more than likely be part of communications for a big walk done by students.
We used to run a walk (The Alpine Walk )once a year for older experienced teenagers that would go from near Bright to Near Licola.
Ps Timber Top is a Campus (yr9 if im correct) of one of the elite Melbourne Grammar schools.
I think it belongs to Geelong Grammar
Really enjoying the content and the historical nature of what you are doing. Grew up on a farm in Shepparton and then moved to Swan Hill. Now I live in QLD and I always yearn for the particular country I saw on this vid.
Sounds great mate. Nothing better then growing up on a farm! I'm glad my kids are currently living on a rural property and get that experience. Thanks for watching the vid.
Also I'd love to look at more of the history around the swan hill area.
This is fantastic well done! I love this!
Cheers thanks for watching.
This was epic. Production value 🔥
Thanks mate.
Wow ... that is some stunningly beautiful country!
Sure is mate.
Amazing & inspiring video mate!
What a beautiful country we live in!
We sure do, and so much of it we can get to ourselves when we head out bush.
Great video.thanks
Awesome adventure and story telling Luke!
Thank you very much for watching!
Wow. First time watching and I’m so glad I did. Fantastic video beautiful scenery and great company. A1. Thanks
Great to hear you loved it! Plenty of vids like this to come throughout the year.
That was bloody epic, lads!
Cheers mate.
Wow that was fantastic! I don't know why but I assumed this was going to be a different POV of the coast trip you did with Mattsy so realising this was entirely new was a real treat.
haha yeah we did two trips back to back and decided for the audience sake to mix it up and post the different adventures at the same time. In a week or so he will post his version of this trip and I'll post the shipwrecked one. Thanks for watching
Awesome walk and good on you mate for doing it old school . Super impressive. Like the video of the snake too. Amazing how cold australia 🇦🇺 can get at night in the high country yet so hot during the day . Thanks for sharing Brother 🇦🇺 🇳🇿
Yeah, we had it pretty warm on most nights for April as it only got down to around 2.c or so. Thanks for giving it a watch!
Well done 👍 another great effort and adventure.
And thank you for watching!
Absolutely awesome dude! 10:54 in Wow!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Very much enjoying the expanding universe of content creators...stumbled on Scotty and from Scotty onto Matsy and Matsy onto your good self. Very much enjoying all your content and you authenticity and sense of adventure not just with regards the outdoors but with regards content creations.
Keep up the great work.
Awesome mate, thanks so much for watching the vids. Scotty and Mattsy have been great inspirations are just genuinly top blokes.
Sensational video mate, epic trip, great editing. You and Mattsy get on really well. The Vic high country in a 4b is great, walking it looks even better.
Cheers mate thanks for watching. Mattsy is a great person to adventure with .. always remains positive no matter the going. Vic High country is well known for all it's 4wd content, but it's also an amazing place for wild camping and hiking.
Loved this video
Thanks for watching
Awesome walk fellas 😎🙌
Thanks for watching.
First time I have watched your channel mate - came over from Mattsy's. The colours on this vid are amazing. True Australiana bush. Thanks.
Cheers mate, thanks for watching and coming along. Plenty of content I'm going to be pumping out this year.
First video I’ve seen of yours, came through Mattsy’s channel. Really great stuff, have subscribed and will be watching more!
Cheers, thanks heaps for subscribing and watching the vid. Mattsy is such a legend it's been great to do trips with him.
Wowza …. Those are some epic mountain ranges
Yeah one of the best in the state! Thanks for watching.
Great stuff Luke! That clifftop campfire at sunset was pretty special...and next morning's sunrise was spectacular. All round epic adventure...really well filmed and edited 👍
Yeah definantly the best campspot we had on the whole trip. Thanks for watching herb.
loved this one, new follower!
Thanks for joining, plenty of content to come
Wow, that's a heck of an awesome adventure.
Your a great team together, Scotty would of loved it.😊
Thanks for watching! I would of loved Scotty to have come!
That was so good to watch. I completed the AAWT at the end of last year and this section was tough but so amazing. Love it.
Absolutely well done on doing the AAWT, that would of been such an amazing experience! What was your favourite section?
@@TheBeardedBushrangergosh it was all amazing and so different to Qld. But I loved Tharwa to Kosci as there was still snow and I hadn’t seen snow for over 30 years. My fav camp was Mt speculation as we stayed right at the top.
Awesome, the first night on this camp was on top of mt spec as well ... truely an amazing campspot.
good one Luke and Matzi . Epic effort . well done !
Cheers thanks heaps! Doubt we would of been able to get a kayak up there though 😄
@@TheBeardedBushranger lol , the right tool for the right job . Only Noah would have taken a kayak up there . but why would he ?
Anyone who carries an oilskin carries a potential kayak anyway . in a way you did carry a kayak up there
@%98%86hannel/UCMTER3PF1TnyeCZCuiEeB5w haha for sure .. I saw what Outback mike did with that tarp on Australia Alone season 1
Just got in for lunch just in time for a new vid uuuuuu beauty.........and then mattsy in the mix we can't go wrong, cheese toastie 4 lunch and a can of coke watching the serenity, take care Ladds.🇭🇲🍻🇳🇿
Sounds like a good way to spend your lunch break 😆 thanks for watching
Oh wow that was magnificent! Stumbled across your channel whilst link surfing and clicked that subscribe button so hard. Awesome content mate!
Great to hear the channel is getting out there then! Thanks for watching mate.
Super Awesomenessss....Been Following along for a while,But Now a New Sub....Thanks for the Adventures....Cheers from North East Georgia
Cheers mate, great to see some international audiences watching the vids. North East Georgia is a long was from Southern Australia!
Great adventure and nicely documented. Love how you let the edit really breathe about 18mins in
Thanks so much for appreciating mate. It's exactly what I was trying to do since I wanted it pretty fast paced at the start.
Was good to see matsy. Good video overall, I like how you include art work from the area your hiking in.
Cheers mate thanks for watching. Yeah it's been great doing a couple adventures with Mattsy, and I do love the old history to areas as well.
nice fast-rolling video, great views, and attitude... great job from both of you!... keep them coming, and Luke, if an old fela was brought to here and now... that's the kind of bed-roll, he'd use... a bit of both worlds
Cheers mate! Yup, minus the nice down sleeping bag in it haha I'm yet to be game enough to go up into altitude with just my woolen blankets.
Absolute legends! Amazing rugged country. Beautifully photographed too. What a team. Did Scotty wimp out for this one? 😉(luv ya Scotty.) Thanks for the experiential feels.
I would of loved Scotty to come along. He is a busy man though with a kid on the way so it was really hard for his schedule.
Awesome 👏
Great vid matey. Luv the piece of music that starts at 17:00. Very moving with the sun rise.🎉
Thanks so much for watching!! I think that piece of music is called Elm Lake .. I found it on the site epidemic sound!
Appreciate the response. Subscribed. Cheers
Strewth how have i missed seeing your newer channel, subbed. Sitting back to catch up 😉😁
haha yeah it's only been going for less then 2 months. Thanks for watching.
Thanks to Mattys I now have another bush ranger to follow 👍 thanks lads 👏
haha cheers mate .. it's been a hell of a ride making friends with mattsy and going on these crazy adventures.
Great episode. Love the high country
Such a beautiful place isn't it.
@@TheBeardedBushranger Absolutely :)
Awesome trip mate. Some of the scenes actually reminded me of your recent trip to Uganda. The views out there are incredible.
I wish there was some sweet single trail to ride along those ridges. That would be the dream!
Yeah interesting that .. I guess mountains tend to look the same world over when you get out of the tree line and into the alpine grass areas.
haha you would have a bloody hard time riding that ridge line .. But there are plenty of other awesome bike tracks in the Vicco high country.
That was amazing hiking through some of the most incredible Country in Australia maybe in the world, also I might add this and the alpine region of south eastern NSW aka the Snowy Mountains have been my Playground for the last 55 years I love that Country.
Such great country mate, pretty keen to explore more of it in the winter though! Thanks for watching.
This one was an epic, mate! Your a brave man doin it in old school gear too. That would do my head in carrying that water bag! Awesome shots, editing, and tunes in this one too. Well done, one of your best I reckon.👍👍👍🇦🇺
The water bag was the worst thing on the first day (about 5kg) so much wieght pulling me down. On the 3rd day, working out to tie the water bag to my swag, and instead use a stick to support my wieght .. really helped.
I have to agree with the lasr comment. What an awsome production. Never give up on what you do. I have watched many docos and the like., and this is up there with the best of them. Well done guys supurb job, i love it.
Mate thanks heaps for that comment. That's really encouraging and having people enjoy the vids just has me pumped to continue making them.
Full credit too you mate!!
Couldn’t imagine doing a hike like that lugging around the old school gear 😂.
The VIC high country is amazing and looks like my cup of tea🤠
Such a beautiful place mate. Thanks for watching .. shoulders still a bit bunged up from the swag 😆
Cracking episode Luke. Great scenery and good job of showing how hard the Viking Circuit is. As someone else said the Nalgene Bottles are in a lot places. Left by GGS Timbertop. They are part of their outdoor ed system.
Yeah great to know, found it really interesting to learn that. I will say the viking circuit is one of the hardest 'established' hikes. I'm sure you could find much harder walks, that are not established. But it was great to give this one a go.
Fair play to you Luke. I’ve done a lot of tough old trips in my day but not once would I have considered doing it the hard way with old timers gear. Maybe a bit too much gear at times as I like my comforts, but hats off to you for tacking that route like that, not just the gear but the method. Tough shoulders you got there lad 💪😎👍
haha I've kind of pigeon holed myself into this type of adventuring now. I swear I have the worst knots in my shoulder now from this trip. I'll probs be all buggered by the time I hit 50 because of it.
Well I do have some good news for you as a guy who has turned 50, when it comes to adventure we don’t get any more sensible about it or learn to slow down. Maybe at 70…. Maybe
New subscriber. I'd never even heard of you until I saw you on a Silly Swagman's video. That coastline walk you guys did. Mate the scenery in this one was absolutely epic. Great video. 😃
Cheers mate! Thanks for watching and subscribing. Was that his most recent one you mean? I've done a few collabs with him over the years, but that was filmed on my other channel Lukes Little Tribe .. this one is a new one just focussing on the Australian swagman stuff.
Timbertop kids mergency supplies I'd say, my old stomping ground. Got hyopthermia on the crosscut back in the 80's trying to find Queens Spur. Great days :) Thanks for bringing back the memories
Getting hypothermia is the real deal! It really can get bloody cold up there! Thanks heaps for watching.
Jesus tap dancing Christ! That was just outstanding boys. What a mission. And beautifully filmed and edited. Such a pleasure to watch. Bloody good stuff!
Thanks for watching! was a good mission and even better being able to do it with Mattsy
❤be still my heart the "Viking" looks so beautiful. Much respect going at this trip old school.
Thanks for watching! I was blown away by the viking
I have travelled much of Australia but it never ceases to amaze me the beauty is still holds that i have yet to see. ❤
I hadn’t seen the new channel, this is so epic mate! Looks like such a great adventure. How’s the views on this thing too, so epic. Pumped for you mate
Cheers mate! Yeah slightly different content from lukes little tribe, but made sense to seperate the two different types of content! Thanks for watching.
❤it thanks
And thank you for watching.
I'd imagine that dip in the pool helped a bit with those achy knees. Fantastic journey!
It was bloody icey though haha
BLOCKBUSTER!!!
Were going up boys
