New subscriber. I like your work. Thanks to you both for an interesting video up in the remote and harsh Victoria High Country - The Australia Alps. Brilliant! I loved the little shack - I hope there are more of them up there, they are likely a life-saver. They should keep some cut, dry firewood in them for emergencies.
Thanks for watching mate. I'll be posting a video each week. This winter I plan to do some more snow camps up in the vicco high country. Most of the huts up there do have fire wood stored for people. This hut had to be the most rickety one I've come across. Thanks again for watching
24:15 I’m thinking one of those tents in a tent hot tent with a metal stove , double insulation and warm brandy in my coffee, but I’m 70 , you young blokes well done, good job. 👍🇦🇺 what an experience that would, unforgettable. 👍 definitely with another person rather than a solo trip.
I'd love to do a hot tent out in the snow. I think next snow camp I might bring just woolen blankets but maybe hike into a hut where I can keep a fire going all night.
Great video and interesting to see Australian landscapes that don't get much attention internationally. I'm Canadian here but no winter camping expert although but I've done a bit. It's definitely harder to stay warm at +1 then -10C because the wet snow gets everything damp and just sucks the heat away! Often those tough experiences that make for great memories though.
Very interesting to hear that mate. We can get the -10.c in our highest mountains. But where this was filmed it was about 1+c in the day and maybe -3.c at night. We did find every quite mushy and wet. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching. This video was made a few years back when my kit was still rather modern. Since then I've been enjoying snow trips with only traditional gear.
Reminds me of one of my camps 1991, in the uk. Very little experience, winter, good forecast that was completely wrong, all cotton clothing, totally inappropriate. Our shelter was a lean-to debris shelter, expecting a cold but dry night, it would be heated by the fire. We got freezing cold rain followed by one of the worst snow falls in years. Although we were tested and had one very miserable night, I still look back fondly at that weekend. Learned a lot too.
Shame you couldn't have a fire, a good camp fire after a good hike is so relaxing. Bugger the bloody bush fires, have ruined such a natural wonder, you know what the first plants that grow back are, ones that are tough as nails and covered in thorns, thanks for sharing.👍👍
Thanks for watching. Yeah it was pretty obvious how many of the snow gums in this area were killed off from those fires. They will take a long time to recover.
I'm amazed that hut is still there. I remember putting some of those bits of tin back on about 15yr ago. Not many people wanting to take care of that hut even back then. Most would keep going to the next one. But most wouldn't be there in nasty weather. There's a good reason why it's in the spot it is.
Cheers mate, this one was from quite a few years ago. Notice I'm still using lots of modern gear here and calling it 'swagman' .. I've certainly progressed with the traditional gear.
Ello ello, got a day of work and thought you know what I've been for my run, did all my camp chores imma chill and watch some hearty Auzzy content. I've never slept in snow or spent alot of time in it but it looks next level.. I've been in 0 degrees and I had the mad slurred speech and sore fingers 😂 so I can Imagine how cold this was. It's so exciting to watch each episode I watch just gets me that much more excited for my massive walk I'm about to do. Thanks
It's a fascinating experiment you have going on - and what you're learning from it. The terrain is so beautiful and challenging but I'm quite glad to be vewing your adventure from the comfort of home(!) Best of luck with the new channel. Look forward to tuning in. Enjoyed the video very much.
Thanks for watching the video! I love expirementing with both old and new ways of camping! Thanks for tuning in to this new channel, I'll be posting quite regularly here.
This is a great vid mate, one of my favourites I've seen from you so far. Mind you I still haven't seen all you content Come do a trip through central Vic/ gold country. I'd love to hike it with you
Cheers mate. This is actuall a vid I made over a year ago. But I'll be heading back out to the snow for some backcountry camping in the next week or so! Can't wait. I'd love to do gold country, so much history you could get into. The closest I've done is a big 60km walk through the Mallee scrub (but that was more north west victoria)
How did I miss this one!? Woo, that looked chilly. Exposed Snowy Plains.. how nice would it be though, to hump in a wall tent and wood stove, and stay a while and listen to that wind. Make long form, atmos video and sound. Well done humping the swag. Could you get two straps on it and wear it vertically on your back?
This video was done a year ago, when I was really trying to get into the traditional stuff. As you can see, a lot of the gear is still very modern, I feel I've grown in my ability to strip it back to a much more traditional route, since then.
You have to love the high country it is harsh can be dangerous it will test you to the limits of your endurance but it is awesome and I have been camping fishing and hunting in all the Vic Alpine Country since the late 60s and it's a place I love.
Yeah high country is my new favourite spot. I used to be all about the coast, but I can't get enough of the high country .. I'll be doing a few more snow camps this winter.
It's certainly been cleared out by fire. Doesn't surprise me, the bush up there was getting so thick, so much fuel it was bound to go up big time. I remember a lot of locals talking about how there was going to be a huge burn coming in the next five years or so, and the bush was now to thick and full of fuel to 'safely' do controlled burns.
Gday mate. This was filmed July last year. Old video I've uploaded on this new channel. I've learnt a lot since then and I'll be heading out to the snow multiple times this winter for more videos
Those bear paw style snowshoes are indeed a bit to handle. Might have been a bit sore from having to walk a bit straddle the next day after the trip I'm guessing.
For the fun of it! Australia snow doesn't even compare with N.A or Europe snow .. fully awknowledge that. I found the old snow shoes and just loved them so much I wanted to get out there and try them out. Thanks for watching.
@@TheBeardedBushranger that is a good enough reason indeed! I have a vintage pair of bear paws, a pair of British Army metal ones (that are quit small) and Canadian Army magnesium snowshoes myself.
Yeah that's great. I'd love to get these out in some actual deep stuff, but it can be hard to get that here in Aus. usually it means traveling to out highest mountains which are ski resorts and you have to pay a ridiculous fee just to park your car.
Gday mate, yeah my mate Tim was well aware of this but there was something about his Hilux that didn't allow chains on the front. I'll have to ak him what the issue was again.
Guess it’s not the swagman way, but it would be good to see you learning from indigenous tradition and showing us how to forage for subsistence. Were there any swag-women?
I have never found any records of a swag-woman. Though it's not impossible .. for the most part, women would never of wondered on the road alone from town town.
I don't think Canada is the old-school traditional swagman term people would use in Australia. It's like saying Pavalova originated from france. Big boots to fill there.
😆1800 swagman? What's with all the new generation gear?oh yes the famous 1800 jet boiler! Come do this in a real canadian winter. I thought you were going to go hard as the title mentioned, like an 1800 caaaant. It was for the looks than anything else.
I like mixing it up with a combination of old and new. Totally admit this was not a hardcore trip and was more a fun experiment. This was one of my first swagman trips I did a while back and reuploaded the vid to this new channel. I've got other vids up where I take only 1800s gear, and will be posting more vids of camps I've done with only old gear in future vids. So stay tuned for that. Thanks for watching!
Also Australian snow can't even compare to Canada .. But this was still one of my favourite camps and I had a heap of fun mucking around .. sorry it dissapointed ya .. I've changed the thumbnail so others don't get confused / misinterpret of what I'm trying to do here. But it's only good vibes here. Have a good day.

Top video to watch but can’t imagine how cold that would be without your 🔥 going 🥶🥶well done lads 👍
The second night wasn't too bad once snuggled in the swag! But I was starting to shiver a bit before I got in. Thanks for watching.

Great video, looked amazing. What a challenge keeping warm in that environment when we usually take all the modern gear for granted.

Ooohh, I don't like the snow but I am happy to watch somebody else be freezing cold and wet. Cheers mate!😂
