Not to get all sappy on y’all, but I have lived here in Columbus Ohio my whole life. As a kid, some of my fondest memories are of me and my memaw, sitting down together in her small living room in her small apartment, getting ready to watch the Bulls play on WGN on a Friday or Saturday night. I was young, but I vividly recall the game, the sounds of the brand new United Center coming through our screen and absolutely making my 9 year old self fall in love with basketball and the Chicago Bulls, I remember the commercials, Miller Lite and the MJ Ball Park Franks spot. I’ll forever be thankful to WGN for televising those Bulls games in the late 90’s, it helped form my love for basketball, and helped me and my memaw grow so close. She’s no longer with me, but the memories sure are. And always will be.
I was born and raised in Cleveland and was a kid in the 90s. I remember watching Bulls games on WGN when my Cavs weren't playing. It was a treat to be able to watch Jordan and Pippen on WGN when they weren't being televised on one of the major national networks or ESPN. Wayne Larrivee was the play-by-play guy and is synonymous with those broadcasts. I think he might still be the radio play-by-play guy for the Green Bay Fudgepackers.
WGN: Jim Durham and Johnny 'Redd' Kerr were second to me as Dick Stockton and Hubie Brown on CBS. I always respected WGN's coverage as a Detroit Pistons fan because when the Pistons would come to Chicago Stadium, Durham and Kerr would call it straight down the line, they would give the Pistons their just due and talk about the Bulls' struggles and the pregame show: Bullseye was great... I just remember the March 16, 1990 game @ Chicago Stadium at the end of the first quarter where John Salley crossed over and threw the ball to Dumars and Dumars went behind the back to Rodman for the dunk; the greatest call I've seen for an opposing telecast giving respect as Kerr says, 'OH WHAT A PLAY!!!..' Durham, 'TO RODMAN!!...' Kerr, 'WHAT A PLAY!!!'...Hey, if you guys have that game then show it over and over again -- I remember that vividly because that was a Friday and the Pistons ran off 23 out of 24 and the next day, during the actual day on Saturday, the Bulls had a big game vs. the 76ers who were climbing their way in the Atlanta division... Chicago lost the Pistons game huge and then vs. Philly they were sluggish and even Durham noticed it saying, 'You see what happens after the Bulls play the Pistons, they are sluggish for days...' Chicago knew the Pistons owned them, WGN knew it, and Kerr/Durham knew it... those times were bliss as a Pistons fan.
I was home (Dixon Illinois) for a family thing during the winter of ‘95-‘96 and feel so lucky to have caught so many of that team’s games on WGN. I don’t think Dixon can get WGN anymore due to some corporate-garbage, but I love watching these clips from here in Los Angeles. ☮️

You never realize how good something was, until you leave it (leave home) and have enough of a distance in time and space from it. I didn't know how unique and special those broadcasts were, but I can see it now even as dry as newscasters are out here, and as I've seen during travels throughout the years (the rare times I see a TV in passing). Everyone likes to think their home town/ city is the best, but Chicago really was the best. Personality, class, culture, diversity, edge, intelligence, and still enough midwest humility and charm. Being in SoCal really rubs it in my face on what I've left behind (for now). The times and corporate takeover/ globalization have sterilized any sense of culture everywhere, but considering...Chicago is still the best.
