Hey guys, I am feeling so blessed that I found y’all! I live in Pensacola, Florida. I just started my first vegetable garden and have been dabbling in flowers. Your videos are so inspiring!!!
This is one of the most informative videos I have ever seen on the subject of turning a profit on a homestead. I know so many folks who thought they were going to make money selling eggs and found out quickly that you need A LOT of chickens to turn a profit. A very small profit. The same is true with tomatoes. Once they find out how labor-intensive growing tomatoes is they just throw in the towel. This video will be such a great help to so many folks, as it is full of common-sense ways to look at starting a homestead business. When you talk about how you had to learn by trying, and then trying something else, I thought "Thank you Jill, and Nate, for your honesty". You are teaching so much more than just what works, and what doesn't. You are teaching the importance of resilience, and persistence. Well done.
@@SmartieMan465 Their RUclips channel generates about $15,000 a year (per Social Blades estimates), they have a store which generates a decent income, they have paid classes you can take, which generate multiple thousands in revenue, and Jill has a book which will generate income. So yes, they generate most of their income from RUclips and directing viewers to their store and classes, that is true. However, with that aside, if you have a small farm you have to have multiple income streams. A small farm is not profitable if you only have one "iron on the fire". In all honestly, and transparency, without RUclips, and their store, and their classes would they be in the same position financially? No. But their job on RUclips is to create content for money. They did that with this video. I have a small homestead, and I can tell you I have tried many things here on my farm to make enough money to quit my day job (selling eggs, selling plant starts, selling vegetables at a local farmer's market). I have found it hard to replace what I am able to earn elsewhere. I am in no way giving up, but it is hard. Moral of the story? I still farm, and I still work a full-time job. As for this video, the valuable thing I took away was the importance of persistence, and resilience. That will help you in anything you try in life. Farming, selling goods, or even trying to start a RUclips channel. That was what I was reinforcing with my comment. Would this video have been better if, like the channel You Can't Eat The Grass and the videos they have done on the subject, they were more transparent about all income streams? Yes.
Hands down, the best video you two have ever made. You were straight forward, to the point and gave us actual numbers! Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I hope y'all know how incredibly helpful this was to some of us! 💕 ~Kelly
Jill! I have watched you a long time and you have grown so much in your confidence. So proud to watch all your progress and hard work! Nathan has a wonderful wife and business partner!
I just bought 5 acres of raw land in Australia, started a youtube channel to document the properties growth, this video is sooooo valuable to me, thank you so much, so much food for thought! I love having options
Thank you for being one of the few videos about making money homesteading that doesn’t revolve around content creation!! I swear every video I’ve looked up has been “edit videos/ audio” “make a RUclips channel” “get advertising on your social media platforms” this is extremely helpful and informative!!
It’s all about where you are located!!! I live in rural West Virginia and have lived here my entire life. The people here just won’t buy anything. Everyone claims poor mouth constantly. I’ve tried selling so many things over the years from plants to handcrafted items with little success. Your success depends on having a customer based that is open to buying a) from the producer b) buy unique items not found in the big box. My customer base is a big box, dollar store base and they have no use for higher quality items.
I would agree with this honestly & I gave up-but I also know times & people are changing & we seriously need to rethink how we were doing things- We have the skills & experience that will be worth trying this again💙
We lived near Charleston for several years. Finding that produce or farm fresh thing that folks will purchase is an extra challenge for you. It would be energizing to work together in a C.S.A. type of coop. I am talking to myself as well. I hope you find that niche that works for you.
Where we live is very similar. Too far from a city to market to people who would be interested in quality organic food, and we do not feel comfortable putting our entire lives online to market our products. Instead of trying to make money off what we make and grow, we SAVE money off what we make and grow. How we make money comes down to our skills. What skill set can we learn or already have that is marketable that we can make income from outside of the 9-5 slave labor of the world.
Have you considered producing products that can be shipped? Contacted restaurants, maybe even ones a little farther away that will bill buy? Where there is a will, there’s a way!
Thank you! You just gave a boost and a ton of ideas. I am in Denmark so cannot grow ginger.... but I can do quail eggs and meat. Edible flowers, yellow rasberries, pink blueberries, white currants, gooseberry kiwi. We have a lot of highend restsurant and Michelin restaurants in my area. So once again... THANK YOU ❤
Glad it was helpful. I guarantee if you walked into one of those restaurants with some free berries and edible flowers to introduce yourself and your farm, they will ask for your contact information
Jill and Nathan … you are a Treasure!!! Your content is a Godsend for my husband and I! I can’t wait to share this post with my Hubby. Homesteading is our retirement plan! We have an acre of land and I aim to make that land our sustenance, our health revitalization plan, and our fitness routine! Can’t wait to get your book next week!
I’ve probably watched this video 30 times for inspiration, y’all are so awesome! Thank you for sharing info like this for people like me who dream of this life but don’t know how to start❤
Scraping my jaw off the ground over the Ahi pepper value!!! I grew them this past year & it was one of my best pepper crops. Then, my husband made the MOST INSANELY DELICIOUS hot sauce... And it's distinctly different than any other. Wow, do I appreciate you! 💖Thank you for this most inspiring video...... It was just what I needed today!
I like your concept of “ filling the void”… so often with small Farmers Market , everyone 😊is growing the same things. I raised organic herbs for a number of years and did well..filling the niche. Now we are on a small homestead and the whole concept has changed , lol. I’m 72, and starting to feel it haha. I stepped back into market about a year ago and have found that farm workshops are now my best source of income. It’s a constant learning curve and the ability to learn and stay flexible is a real asset. You guys are truly doing a great job! Thank you so much for sharing😊
This was so helpful in getting me to think outside the box. I just started my own backyard nursery this year and was feeling a little stuck but now i feel like I have more options than I thought. Thanks for your honesty in your process
For animals,we do specialty chicks, selling eggs no,hatching those eggs into specialty breed chicks that sell for $35 per day old chick, yes. We also raise off season goat kids in our insulated horse barn. We need the goats to have kids to get milk and the kids are the result. We can have Dec. born kids with an insulated barn and they are ready to sell in June for the milk fed goat market. We keep a few extra goats just for this purpose and take just a bit of milk from each and get more than we need and still feed the kids .
Hey Jill, I e watched this video often for inspiration!! I have found most all my answers to additional questions in the comments. I was wondering what variety of sunflowers you are planting. Thanks you for your time.
Jill, you have been a steady source of inspiration for me throughout my entire garden journey. I am so often feeling incapable of pursuing this dream, and then a video of yours will pop up and give the inspiration and motivation my soul needs. Thanks you for sharing your journey!
I haven't watched you in a while, and I agree with many comments, how much you have grown. I have noticed that the videos I enjoy the most no matter what the topic, are people who speak quickly, confidently and succinctly. You have attained that. I am a senior with a hobby garden. The lettuces and greens are the produce I most enjoy because they are so fresh. The shelf life in the store is what makes them so valuable. Also rasberries for me. No effort at all. Except keeping the plants in check. Keep up the good work
Howdy Neighbor! We are in Bismarck, AR and trying to grow our 5 acres into our family homestead. This video was the information I have been looking for! Especially since hubs and I are just starting out!
Just caught this video. Elder care boxes (lower weekly $$ for small amount). I started with 10 from extras planted in my garden. Save those $$ to scale up or buy tools & supplies.😊
Thank you so much for this video! My husband and I had "the talk" today about how to make our dream a reality making our 10 acres for us. This video gave me so much inspiration being brand new to all of this. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
@@WhisperingWillowFarm Very few vlogs on farmsteading get into the hard realities of the economics of being successful, so thank you. A hobby farm is one thing, making self-sustaining, even growing profits is not discussed enough. Success to Whispering Willow Farm!
I cannot stop thinking about this video. After watching yesterday, your information has me reimagining how to use our 3/4 of an acre in town. Jill and Nathan, you all seem to get your information through guardian angels to say what I need to hear. Thank you!!
I’m looking forward to your book arriving so I can dive a bit more into making a bit of a profit from home. I took an herb course this year, dove into making tea/tinctures, and gave over 200 plants away for free. 2023 is the year I make some $ to help fund a few projects.
Great video. We tried chicken on selling eggs of certain types. We realized this just wasn't worth it in our area. We just grow for ourself. My one son has a friend that grows micro's for his local restaurants and is doing great there. He lives in a different state in an area with lots of restaurants so the demand is there.
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm in zone 4b (northern wisco) and only 12p days in my grow season so I'm trying to figure out how to grow things in my basement. Looking into mushrooms because there are soo many uses and there is little variety in my area. My farmers market can barely keep Asparagus and mushrooms on the tables so why not try it out! Plus, no expense on grow lights for the mushrooms which is huge for us! I cannot thank you enough for making this video! I've been racking my brain trying to figure out a way to make money and finally get out of my job where I am a number and not a person. Love you guys and OTIS is doing fantastic! turns out we like sourdough more than normal bread!
Very informative video, thank you. Can you talk more about how you went about finding what your market was? Did you just go out and talk to florist? How do you know how many others are doing it?
Love this video, just watched it again. Question: how did you find buyers for the ginger and sunflowers? We are just getting started, sitting at the drawing board
Finding buyers for sunflowers will be easier. You can go find local florists for the sunflowers. The ginger fell into our laps because we have friends who make homemade elderberry syrup that uses ginger and they weren’t able to grow enough
Hands down one of the most informative videos I have ever watched. On anything. Jill and Nathan, thank you for sharing your knowledge and passions so freely with us!
what a fantastic vlog! We are about to move onto our homestead and our desire is to make a modest income from working the land. You have given me some great food for thought.......God bless you both as you grow and grow
Can you talk more about how to find people to buy your crops? Did you advertise somehow and they came to you? Do you have a booth at a farmers market? Do you sell the sunflowers individually, in bundles, or as a big lot? Thank you! 😊
Great questions. First of all, I took lots of good pictures of the farm and everything we had available to be able to show potential customers. Second I dropped off samples to local restaurants that we had our eye on. Third I called, emailed, and opened lots of doors. There were lots that told me no but I didn't get discouraged. You have to find those local restaurants that want to separate themselves from the big chain restaurants. I talk about this in my book. thewhisperingwillowfarm.com/cart
Good question! It took lots of knocking on doors and free produce/flowers. We also called lots of places in our area. We heard lots of no thank you's but with persistence we found some.
I d be curious how much that you make is dependable profit? Or, does it all go back into your business? Plus some things are seasonal so don't provide regular year round monthly income. At the end of the day it all is part of the planning. I've wondered if you have a plan to bring Nate to the homestead full time? Maybe down the road you can you can do a step 2 video and branch into more information on making money on a homestead??? video income-ins and outs of vlogging. Selling merch. .....You are doing a great job mentoring us in so many ways! I really enjoy your cander and overall sharing. Hope you have a great thanksgiving! 💜💙💚💛😊
Hello Nathan and Jill, just now had a chance to watch your video. Thank you so much for giving me even more inspiration than you already have. I am definitely looking to change a few things. My husband and I met you in Virginia at HOA in 2021 and knew right away that you guys are genuinely honest loving people. We love everything you stand for. God Bless you and your family. And Happy Thanksgiving
I feel like this video was quite helpful. You've got my wheels turning... My question is, how do I figure out WHO to contact to try and get a contract for growing a specific crop?
Please do a video on how to find buyer sources for produce.
So aji just means "pepper". There are many varieties of aji. The one you are growing is Aji Charapita if anyone is interested.
Thank you, I was trying to figure out which Aji! Didn’t know if it was the charapita, Amarillo or Cristal!
Great video with wealth of information without any annoying music or un relevant information.
Just keep the great content live

Hello Nathan and Jill, just now had a chance to watch your video. Thank you so much for giving me even more inspiration than you already have. I am definitely looking to change a few things. My husband and I met you in Virginia at HOA in 2021 and knew right away that you guys are genuinely honest loving people. We love everything you stand for. God Bless you and your family. And Happy Thanksgiving
Thank you for your kind words and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family
I feel like this video was quite helpful. You've got my wheels turning... My question is, how do I figure out WHO to contact to try and get a contract for growing a specific crop?
This was good.
Glad you found it helpful
Thanks 🌺
