'Dead and Bloated' is probably my favorite STP anthem. It's raw and visceral. It is truly a song from the gut. A close second is 'Sex Type Thing.' They were a little harder than grunge. Like so many others- Staley, Cobain, Cornell- Weiland was taken way too soon.

They were lumped in with grunge at the time (pretty much everything post hair metal/"Smells Like Teen Spirit" breakout of the early nineties was); whether or not they should have been is another matter (in the first place, what even is grunge - sound, look, from Seattle?)
Most of the bands that were considered grunge had very little in common, outside of the time they hit mainstream.

    • @eviekelpie1

      @Usernamesarewack
Only a very small minority of astute people didn't arbitrarily categorize everyone; the overwhelming majority (i.e., mainstream media, most radio stations, MTV, most of the music industry, and most regular people) lumped all of these bands that came out in the early nineties (and appeared to have somewhat similar styles and appearance) as grunge. This started to change when the so-called Nu Metal (bands like Linkin Park, Korn, etc.) started emerging in the mid nineties.
Seattle birthed the grunge movement, but it wasn't the sole criteria for it (just like all punk bands did not originate in the U.K., which is where it more or less started).

    • @johnnelson3665

The first album was definitely grunge. But I think they were branching out with ‘Purple.’ And even more so with ‘Tiny Music.’ They really did a good job creating their own sound. And yeah drugs influenced their creativity. Even the music video is all over the place.

According to Wiki, the meaning of the song is indeed about being stuck in the same situation over and over again. In Scott's case, it was his heroin addiction. The funny story behind the main lyric comes from when he was a kid and his parents put The Eagles' "Life in the Fast Lane" on, and he thought they were singing "Flies in the Vaseline".

Scott Weiland had such a great voice, IMHO he is in the same league as Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. I consider this to be grunge, but others may think differently. You need to hear "Sour Girl" by Stone Temple Pilots and "Fall to Pieces" by Velvet Revolver. This was fairly early in his career, his work with Velvet Revolver was towards the end of his life. You will be able to see the toll that heroin took on him.

Rob you are very perceptive you're exactly right about this song and STP is grunge but its music is veiled by a pop veneer, and like Vaseline and other compositions Scott weiland's words communicate a mind struggling between light and darkness. This song deals with Scott Weiland's descent into drug addiction. At the time, he was doing his best to hide it from his bandmates and his girlfriend, but he knew he was turning into a junkie, a condition exacerbate by the success of STP's first album, Core When he sings here about searching and going blind, it relates to the cycle he started when he became an addict. In his autobiography, Weiland said the song is about "being stuck in the same situation over and over again," adding, "It's about me becoming a junkie."

This group is OG Grunge. I was in high school when Grunge hit the scene and I loved STP! They helped sing my high school soundtrack. On their first album Core the first song is called Dead and Bloated and it’s a song that you put on and turn the radio all the way up and when it drops it will cause you to get hyped like you wouldn’t believe. The lead singer’s name is Scott Weiland and he passed in 2015 of a drug overdose. RIP. Scary to think about of the grunge groups like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana all have had tragedies with someone in the band. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain by suicide, STO Scott Weiland drug overdose, Layne Staley of Alice In Chains, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. The angst is there in their music.

Almost every rock group I like can be classified as alternative metal. It's kinda hard to describe the genre because it has so many influences from different styles of rock. The best way to describe it would be by the bands. Alien Ant Farm, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Korn, Filter, Incubus, Stone Temple Pilots, these can all be considered alternative metal. Most of these are in heavy rotation in my Spotify playlist.
    For more STP, I'd suggest

I would say your analysis of the lyrics is pretty dang close, near spot on, if not correct! Good job on the analysis. I tend to focus on music first then lyrics second, so it always takes me a while to get a song's message. These guys were huge in the grunge era, and in my top 3 bands of that era. Almost anything from their first 2 albums really gives you a good feel for what they're about and really not a bad song on any of those albums. I see you did Plush the first time, which was their biggest hit, so I would suggest probably their 2nd biggest which is "Interstate Love Song", which is a bit of a softer side of them, but still rocking. I can recommend so many other songs like "Dead and Bloated", "Wicked Garden", "Unglued", and "Sex Type Thing" are the first to come to mind. Vaseline is one of my favorites of theirs so this was quite a treat to see a reaction video from you on!

STP is considered grunge and having been a teenager at the time I always put them in that category as well. But listening to them now I think they, like The Smashing Pumpkins, were more grunge-adjacent. Which is not a thing, but even The Smashing Pumpkins didn’t consider themselves grunge. They were all part of the same scene, though. And, behind Smashing Pumpkins, STP was probably my favorite band back then. This album, Purple, was the first one I bought when I finally made enough money to buy a cheap stereo for my room with a CD player. And it’s a great album. “Interstate Love Song” is my personal favorite followed by “Big Empty.” To this day, I hear the opening chords of “Interstate Love Song” and am back in the room I shared with my foster sister, with its gold shag carpet, getting ready for school in front of our huge mirror with this CD playing.

Yeah I can see how both bands didn’t entirely fit into he term grunge. They were of the same time period and intertwined, but their sound was slightly different. I think the term alternative hard rock suits them better although STP first album is as close to grunge as you can get without calling it grunge.

One of my all-time favorite bands. Grunge or hard rock. You really can't go wrong with calling them an alternative band.
So many good songs. Please do "Wicked Garden." RIP Scott Weiland.

Scott Weiland. He later went on to be the frontman for Velvet Revolver, which is basically Guns and Roses w/out Axel Rose. He’s so great!! RIP Scott!

Interstate Love Song. Without question is the 'everyone loves this song' of all of their portfolio, but this was a tremendous band for quite some time. A LOT of great tracks.

Scott Weiland, vocals. Dean DeLeo, guitars, Robert DeLeo, bass. And the severely underrated Eric Kretz on drums. The Pilots' sound is mainly driven by the DeLeo brothers, who were clearly influenced by Zeppelin & Aerosmith. Weiland had a phenomenal ability to shift the tonal quality of his voice, so it could sound like they had 5 singers instead of one. I know they released an album after Scott's death, but I haven't heard it. There were plans for Chester Bennington (of Linkin Park) to take over on vocals, but then, of course, he died as well. Also, at some point in the mid to late 90's, when Weiland was in the throes of addiction & recovery, the rest of the band recorded an album with a different singer (can't recall the gent's name) under the name of Talkshow. It was a solid album, but clearly not STP without Weiland. Given the pattern, I'm sure the DeLeo brothers will carry on musically in some capacity, probably with Kretz in tow.
Please check out "Interstate Love Song" for a sampling of how these guys could vary their sound. Tremendous depth in their catalog.

I was very lucky to see STP in concert when Scott was in good form and mostly good health. At his best, he had an absolutely amazing voice which was even better live than it was recorded in studio. A very underrated band IMO.

"Fly in the Vaseline" is a play on the fairly old-timey phrase "fly in the ointment" which basically means a good thing that is spoiled by something, like a fly spoils the ointment. He's saying they're the fly, or the thing that spoils the situation.
"It was a great party, the only fly in the ointment was my brother got smashed and wouldn't stop puking all over the place."

This song, and STP in general, is sort of grunge-ish. It's got the fuzzy guitars of metal and the uptempo of punk, which are hallmarks. You might consider it "alternative rock," which is basically music from the same era that didn't really fit the grunge template fully. You could listen to something by, say, Nirvana or Pearl Jam, and then something by Green Day (who are more punk leaning than metal leaning) for an illustration of the difference in sound.
Basically grunge is one part metal, one part punk, one part depression, and one part heroin. Mix until well blended.

Dead and Bloated, Sin , Creep, Trippin' on a hole in a paper heart. Scott Weiland was a tortured genius and like many left a great hole when he departed. The DeLeo brother's are some of the most gifted writer's of straight up rocking songs that were all over the place.

I ghost wrote Vaseline for Stone Temple Pilots as a gift and tribute to Scott Weiland1994 through Howard Stern who I was Ghost writing for at the time. I kept bragging to stern that I had ghost written songs in classic rock genre and could prove it on tape. The song was about Scott's addiction to drugs more so heroin. So you too pick that up in one shot just like I sang it for them in one shot thanks Jerry.
