Welcome to the Grunge Era in music:
In an interview with the rolling stone mag, when asked about the lyrics of this song Chris Cornell quoted
    Matthew 15:27
“And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.”
As an inspiration for this song. It's taken from the dog's prospective. Which is fitting when you think about it. The whole album essentially tackles topics of life with songs such as drug use (say hello 2 heaven), homelessness (spoon man), love (All Night Thing), and Spirituality (Wooden Jesus). Say Hello 2 Heaven was written by Chris Cornell when his room mate, friend and fellow vocalist Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose.
As always, listen, appreciate, and enjoy!! God Bless!!!

Hi guys! This song was written by Chris Cornell about the record industry. He is saying that he is conflicted about taking money from the industry (the mouths of decadence) because he knows that the money is actually coming from the people who buy the albums( the powerless ) and have to pay the high prices when they don’t have much money. He wants to have a successful career but not off the backs of the people who don’t have anything especially when he already has what he needs(my cup is already overfilled). He is contemplating a “hunger strike “ which is a euphemism for him not making any more albums unless the industry quits taking advantage of the people

Back in 89/90 my roommate in college ran into the band at a music store at KU when they were on tour promoting Louder than Love and after we listened to the tape he said this about Cornell "he has balls the size of watermelons and lungs the size of volkswagons." I kick myself for not going with them to the store that day and getting to meet the band before that whole scene blew up.

Beautiful reaction and the voice that you said was "earthy" and deep is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (so you've heard him before) and the other voice (the first voice) is 100% Chris Cornell! This band was formed for one album only in Tribute to their close friend Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone who passed tragically of an accidental overdose to Heroin in 1990).... this band consists of Andrew's friends and are all members of bands you've heard before. Members are as follows:
CHRIS CORNELL: lead singer of Soundgarden (and later Audioslave)
MATT CAMERON: drummer of Soundgarden and later, PEARL JAM
STONE GOSSARD: lead guitar of Mother Love Bone and later, PEARL JAM
JEFF AMENT: Bass guitar of Mother Love Bone and later, PEARL JAM
MIKE MCCREADY: Rythm guitar of Screaming Trees (and friend of Andrew Wood, Stone and Jeff) and later, PEARL JAM
EDDIE VEDDER: unknown at the time, is only on this one track, but would become the lead singer of Pearl Jam after this was recorded
***Out of this collab, the band Pearl Jam was "born"...... their lead singer (unknown at the time) was in the studio waiting for an auditon with Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (formerly of MLB) for their new lead singer position (due to Andrew Woods death)..... as Chris Cornell stated: "I was struggling to get my vocals to sound the way I was hearing it in my head. Then this guy Eddie got up and quietly, but with some balls, walked up to the mic and started singing. I liked it and the rest is history"..... Eddie Vedder is only on this one song.
This album was released in April 1991 and Pearl Jam's 1st album "TEN" was released just 4 short months later!! So, out of Andrew Woods tragic death came this beautiful album and the members of the band Pearl Jam met and became the iconic band that they are today.... it's always amazes me how some of the most beautiful things can come out of tragedy.... GREAT reaction!! Sorry for leaving such a long comment but like I said it amazes me and I just wanted to share the story (what I know of it anyway)....

Mark Arm is alive and well, still belting out tunes with Mudhoney. However, Mark Arm was also the lead singer of Green River, whose bass and rhythm guitarists were Jeff and Stone respectively.

Chris Cornell tames himself a bit on these tracks, but loses none of the impact if his delivery. To give context to this song/band, This was a tribute album. The rest of the band was members of a band called Mother Love Bone. The original singer tragically died. That band hired Eddie Vedder and they became Pearle Jam. The then Asked Soundgarden lead singer, Chris Cornell to sing on the album too, and that is how they became Temple of the Dog.

  • @johncampbell756
    @johncampbell756 2 года назад

There was a band called Mother Love Bone. They released one studio album called Apple. Days before release, the lead singer, Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose. Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell used to be his roommate. He put together this band as a tribute the bassist Jeff Ament and rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard were in Mother Love Bone. The drummer is Matt Cameron who was also in Soundgarden. Jeff and Stone were putting together a new band while they were recording this album. They git lead guitarist Mike McCready. The second singer is Eddie Veddder who came up to Seattle from San Diego to audition for their lead singer. Chris was having a hard time creating the vocal mode fir this song. Eddie offered up what became his vocals. Chris liked it so much he had Eddie sing. Eddie also sang back up on another song. Eventually Stone, Jeff Mike and Eddie would become Pearl Jam. Eventually Soundgarden broke up and Pearl Jam's third drummer left. Matt Cameron officially joined Pearl Jam. So, although Pearl Jam did not yet even exist, this sing features their entire current lineup (plus Chris Cornell, RIP).
Side note: Andrew Wood's death also inspired the Alice in Chains song Would? The song on this album written directly as a tribute is the spectacular "Say Hello to Heaven." You need to hear that to know all that Chris could do.
The movie Singles was shot around this same time. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains play live in it. Chris appears in a scene as a character and one of the main actor's band is Eddie Stone and Jeff, who all get speaking roles. Jeff and Chris also worked behind the camera with Jeff in the art department and Chris writing music for the film. Set in Seattle, it is a great nod to relationships and the birth of grunge music. Plus tons of interesting cameos. (And, yes, it actually is a good movie. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe who also did Jerry Maguire and Say Anything and wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High.)
