As another fan noted, this band is considered a 90's one hit wonder because the lead vocalist passed away from an overdose. His voice was natural, and his songwriting skills were vital to the band. Thus they broke up having lost him. It wasn't a topic receiving enough notice, but acceptance and having community has always deserved focus. Too bad we've ignored so many opportunities to deal.

It came out right around the time my husband and I met back in 1993 and we both just fell in love with it and so we coined it "OUR SONG" with my favorite line being, "I just want someone to say to me, I'll always be there when you wake." 28 years later we're still going strong and it's still "OUR SONG!"

If you watch the official video for Guns N Roses' "Don't Cry" you can see Shannon Hoon, Blind Melon's lead singer, singing backup with Guns N Roses in the scenes where they're shown playing in some building's rooftop. Story goes Shannon is from the same town in Indiana as Axl and he was friends with Axl's sister back in the day. Axl at this point was a huge diva and a very difficult person, but supposedly he was still pretty cool to the people who knew him and were friends with him back when he wasn't famous. Sadly, Shannon passed away due to substance abuse shortly after their second album came out.

The loss of Shannon is such a tragedy. I was lucky enough to catch the band before they released that first album in 92... great concert at the Shriners Auditorium in Springfield Missouri on the 120 Minute tour. The line up was PIL, Big Audio Dynamite, Live and Blind Melon. An incredible show. We did not know who the band was but they were fantastic. Shannon Hoon is the only person I have seen who walked off the stage on to a walk around on the hands of the audience... he did a stage dive. Let me say it again, we did not know the band, they had not released an album. Let that sink in.

I feel like there is an effect on his voice, but I’ll let the real musicians battle it out in the other comments. Regardless, Shannon Hoon’s voice is so unique, and you could hear it live or in the studio. The rest of this album is amazing, one of the few out there I can enjoy from start to finish. Struggling with anxiety, depression and a major drug problem, the latter would ultimately claim his life. I think they made something like three albums? The final two have some great tracks, though neither quite lived up to this album, their debut.
Going forward, there are several Blind Melon songs that stick out as worth doing another reaction. Their song, “Change”, is a well written, slower tune that still carries a nice groove. It’s probably one of my favorite 90’s songs, and is a classic among Blind Melon fans. I suggest looking for one of the live performances from a late night show or similar show, most of which are acoustic feel much more personal. The live at Alternative Nation ‘93 is good one. The Letterman performance is good, and includes an acknowledgment from Shannon regarding Kurt Cobain, who had just died a couple days earlier. Sleepyhousepodcast uploaded a good one called Blind Melon Change Acoustic, set in a living room or hotel room. It’s a great version and you really get the personal feel there. Their performance on MTV’s Most Wanted 1993 is also a really great version (and has one of the best sounds from the early videos). I’d probably stay away from the ‘94/‘95 versions, such as those from Woodstock and the Metro. They’re okay, although not quite as intimate. And Shannon’s drug issues were really bad by then, and you can definitely tell from the performances. There’s also an uploaded acoustic version without a video and that runs about 6 minutes. The on-screen static visual is the band submerged in a creek or lake. The recording itself is from the studio, so the sound is really good.
Beyond “Change”, you might consider “Tones Of Home”, another tune from their debut album. It’s very much upbeat, and like most tunes from this album carries a wonderful groove.
Another song worth checking out is their cover of The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed’s “Candy Says”. I suggest the one uploaded by user sergiomelon, titled, “blind melon candy says acoustic christmas 1993”. It’s excellent, has great sound and cool visuals. It’s one of my favorite covers of all time. Like most of my favorite live songs, there are some imperfections that help make it stand out as perfect. (I hope that makes sense).
Finally, they did a version of “Three Is A Magic Number”, from the Schoolhouse Rocks program. It’s totally appropriate for your daughters, should you wish to have them react again.

Oh, and there’s a cool one minute version of Me & Bobby McGee performed in a studio (I think at the 2 Meter Sessions taping) that you or anyone else should check out. It’s tragically too short, and I’ve never found a full version of the song. But it’s a cool one minute ditty and I’m glad it exists.
