I'm "That Guy" on This Trip, Aren't I? 5 Days on Dirt Bikes in Canada, Day 1

  • Despite nearly dying the last time I traveled to British Columbia to ride dirt bikes with the ‪@TractioneRag‬ crew, I signed up to return this year for the Big Rock Candy Mountain dirt bike riding event: a week-long extravaganza of pristine singletrack, high desert riding, amazing food, great friends, and one of the coolest campout locations on the planet.
Day one of five days riding dirt bikes in Canada didn't go well for me. I started out pretty slowly and quickly discovered that I was in way over my head. I thought that was the worst until I discovered that I lost my phone on the trail somewhere and had to separate from the group to go back and find it. After catching up with the group we rode dirt bikes down the infamous descent that claimed a certain popular RUclipsr's desire to ever ride dirt again.
I'll be honest, this dirt bike riding trip was a lot for me. I lack both the skills and the physical fitness to be successful on this kind of hard enduro riding. Still, the only way out is through, and I was determined to survive this trip without quitting along the way. Did I make it? Well, you'll just have to subscribe to find out...
Big shout out and thanks to ‪@spitescorner‬ for suffering through this experience alongside me. I couldn't have done it without you, my man.

I said it on the Trailer video and I will say it here:
something I learned very quickly, and something I think the Dork knows as well. For us riders that are overweight, when the ride gets tough we let our brains tell us we are not capable of doing something because of our weight and that makes the ride 100 times harder than it needs to be. There has been many rides where I thought I was WAY in over my head. then it clicked that I was over reacting and I completed the ride a better man. Like Dork said towards the end "okay fine worth it"

That certain RUclipsr Spite had worked with had some very odd reasoning to just altogether quit doing off-road biking... I don't wanna judge too much, but for him to entirely stop off-roading I believe it to be mind-numbingly ridiculous and just jumping to an extreme conclusion based on a one time very intense excursion. There are such things as day rides on medium to low skill level trails... Enough said.

Not being judgmental or anything but have you taken offroad enduro courses.
Have done a couple of Chris Birch courses (many other good instructors out there as well), the amount of info and learning from just a single days instructions is crazy. Helps to unlearn some of the bad riding habits we have and get closer to proper technique.

Fell with and without passenger, rode in monsoon-like rain, ran over small animals, damaged the bike more than once, clogged bike so badly with clay that the wheels wouldn't turn, and watched friends get hurt. Rode during the day and often at night, and usually without a helmet. I now rarely leave the pavement. Good for you for taking this challenge. Stay safe.

i assume when you bottomed out you were sitting? if so there is your issue
As for the last climb, that would have been right foot off and used as a balancing aid /stepping stone foot with left foot firmly pressing into peg 🙂 you are still trying to win hills with revs, it doesn't work - position of weight , balance and clutch give traction - keep going Ben, keep going and keep smiling through the sweat and tears heheh we all do it - or you can go back to scooters on tarmac - not much of a choice now is it bud 🙂
