- How to remove and replace the steering wheel and driver's side airbag on the 4th gen Maxima.
Tools needed are a T50H (T50 security torx) bit, a 19mm socket for the steering wheel mounting nut, and you really should use a torque wrench to torque everything to spec. - Авто/Мото
This video holds true for a 2000 Frontier as well, Helped me out today. T50 & 19mm same as well.
Yes, it appears to be there just to reduce vibrations in the steering wheel. I haven't noticed any ill effects from removal.
Thank you for your time and this was very helpful.
As in the video, a clunking or banging sound inside the steering wheel is likely to be that metal piece hitting the steering column shaft.
Eventually I might swap mine over to the later style, if I do I'll be sure to make a video.
That's a bit more involved, I'll have to make a video on that at some point. All I can say off the top of my head is it involves getting access to some real PITA bolts up underneath the dash.
There is no master spline or key on the steering shaft, so all you have to do is pull the wheel off and rotate it a spline or two in the direction you want. With that little amount of change, there's no need to worry about the clock spring.
Instead of doing that, I'd recommend just having the front toe set (the only factory adjustable alignment angle), during which they'll set steer ahead and get the steering wheel centered.
Yep, I'll put that on the list as well.
I believe the wheels should interchange, but as far as the audio controls (which I believe are mounted on the airbags in the A33, not the wheel) you'd have to hope the car's prewired for it. Search around on the org, I'm sure it's been covered there a few times.
Yep, I'll put that on the list. If a 5 speed, all you have to do is unscrew it. If an automatic, it's a bit more work.
The part is not available separately from Nissan, you'd have to buy a new wheel to get it new. The plate it's mounted on is just mounted to the wheel with two screws, so if you find one at the junkyard you could get just the plate instead of the entire steering wheel,
The video was very helpful and made me feel safe about removing the airbag and looking for the rattle in the steering wheel. It was exactly what u said it would be. However I am unsure what exactly that heavy metal piece is. Can I remove it completely? Is it just a counter weight?
You're supposed to, but as seen in the video I never bother. Yes, if you disconnect the battery you'll lose any adaptives that have been learned.
That would be the proper way to do it, personally I've never bothered unless I'm going more invasive than just pulling an airbag, like pulling the dash out (even then, I tend to not bother with it).
Yes, there is a possibility of setting off the airbag if you don't power down the circuit and wait for the caps in the airbag control unit to discharge, but it's somewhat small. Personally, I've pulled hundreds of air bags in the past 7 years, and I've never had an issue.
If the noise is coming from the steering wheel/behind the airbag, yes. Otherwise it could be various worn out suspension components.
Assuming the airbag bolts are tight? Is the airbag tight to the bracket? There aren't many reasons the airbag would be loose, it shouldn't take more than a simple visual inspection to determine why.
appreciate..
Could you do a video on how to take off the shift knob? Ive been having some trouble trying to take it off. Thanks for the vids man, i always come back here for reference!
I have the same car and my steering wheel is crooked too, so the 12 o'clock position is pointing to 1030, similar to your video and my tires are tracking relatively straight. Could you explain exactly how you lined up the two dots on the steering shaft and wheel? did you have to adjust the clock spring slightly to compensate? please help
Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for replacing the dash airbag?
do you have to disconnect the battery before removing the airbag in modern cars, and if you disconnect battery does that mean your car computer stuffs up
Can u do a video of a 95-97 swap I want to attack this project but Im not familiar with removing the piece behind the sterring wheel
hi, i have the same steering as yours and what happened is the airbag is quite loose and keeps knocking back and forth while driving. also i disconnected the horn wires from the horns because it won't stop when connected. what seems to be the fix? thanks!
@4:00 so that the piece that make the metal banging noise? every time i hit a bump or on a bumpy road?
I have a 99 Nissam maxima and was wondering if you could show or explain to me how to replace the passenger side airbag?
hi sir, a very important question, should i remove the + cable of my batery before i start to change my steering wheel, i heard if you don't do it, your airbag will be active and you can get injured
is it true THX IN ADVANCE
can u make a video on how u replaced air bag covers if the new air bag was a diffrent color
+Miguel Meza Never swapped the covers on these, so it'd be a learning experience.

Dude why do you have an honda controler in your car
