I’m still digesting the utterly devastating news re. Steve Wright’s afternoon show. I have been a loyal listener through the decades. Steve is everything to the show. His wealth of experience, people skills, knowing exactly when to intervene, banter with the team, creativity, knowledge, honesty, humour and upbeat personality make the best radio presenter ever! He’s simply outstanding! I live alone having lost my husband and then my partner, Steve’s shows have got me through the darkest of days but also given me immense pleasure with conversation and music. He’s just like a friend. I find comfort in hearing his voice around my home/car like he’s talking to me personally, a rare gift in this profession, his programme is often the highlight of my day, I look forward to it daily. I rarely miss if I do I listen on the I-player.
I don’t understand the thinking behind this appalling decision. Steve has moved with the times, the programme is well balanced with music of all types including the golden oldies choices of listeners, Serious Jockin’, interviews, features, factoids. His enthusiasm for all of this is second to none. His salary is justified as he is of the highest quality.
Hearing Scott Mills cover Ken’s and other shows he makes numerous mistakes especially with Pop Master, he talks about himself lots and thinks he’s on Radio1 which is so irritating, he is not in Steve’s league and never will be. If the thinking is that we will get used to him in time, this won’t happen. Since Simon Mayo left I no longer tune in to Radio 2 after 5.00pm. Likewise with Zoe Ball’s Breakfast show. There are better radio stations around.
I am disappointed to hear that Sarah Cox’s show will be extended by an hour, she is again a very irritating presenter.
I dislike the direction Radio 2 is going in and I won’t be listening after September, losing a very loyal listener of many years. Hoping Steve Wright moves to a radio station where his talents will be truly appreciated. I will then follow him!

If you're wondering, this isn't quite how it played out on Radio 2. Steve made his announcement at about 16:50 (10 minutes before his show was meant to end) and then played two other songs without saying anything. The end theme (as heard here) didn't play out - Radio 2 just went from one song to the time signal and news.
Like almost everyone else, I'm devastated Steve's Big Show is ending. It's been the sound of so many journeys for me - be them driving back from school, college or uni or going on holiday. I've never really heard Scott Mills myself so can't really judge yet, but he's got some collosal boots to fill.

Scott Mills is not the man to replace Steve Wright, the BBC is making yet another huge mistake. The BBC wouldn't see that as a problem. They can't stand their older (and most loyal) audiences and are obsessed with chasing the 'yoof' market. Just look at Pick of the Pops which not so long back regularly featured charts from the sixties and even fifties. Nowadays its centre of gravity is the 80s and 90s with the odd duck into the later 1970s.

The man deserved a knighthood years ago. I can only imagine he has been offered an honour of some sort but has turned it down. Steve has always wanted to keep a low profile. He rarely does interviews. His famous 'Wogan House doorstep' appearance on Friday 1st July 2022 was the first TV interview he has agreed to, since he appeared on The One Show talking about Love Songs, 12 years ago. Love the show, always. p.s. chance of a SHAHT-AHT? Also can't wait for Tim's intro - how long until Serious Jockin' (no g)? 🥳
