Had a little cry. He sounded much younger and high pitched than I recall joining later in the mud 80s but his gorgeous humour is shining through. I hear him laughing at himself which I loved. Forever missed xx
wrighty was good wasn't he, much missed. iv not listened to him in years due to work etc etc but when I caught him on a Sunday now and again and I enjoyed it but since his passing iv delved into his past shows ( god bless RUclips ), and yeah ., he was a superb DJ, could easily hold a show on his own. RIP
Thank you very much for this upload. I don't think Steve would mind me saying, I thought there were elements of Everett (OMG I just typed that a second or two before Steve said "Everett" @11:36..... you trying to tell me something Steve? Allo boy!) and great to hear the Gambo jingle and Tommy Vance introduction. RIP Silly Boi. Missin' you and doing some serious grievin' (without the G). Keep ya tongue aht! ❤🙏❤
His first show? Wow! Never heard this before.Straight from the off, he engaged his audience, and made them feel part of the show.Brilliant interpretation of what was needed to make it all work. From his first show, to his last he made you feel you were important. You were the important one! Not him or the artist. Not many could carry that off with sincerity. But Wrighty certainly could! The impressions were also there at the beginning, and all the 'bits and pieces' were already permutating in the background. He really was a one off! Such a special individual and broadcaster. So sad listening back to this, and thinking we will never hear his brilliance on the airwaves again. That is why all the clips of his shows should be played as much as possible, and saved for posterity. So a new generation can come in and pick up from where Steve left off, and create their own style. There will be only one Steve, but "zoo radio" will live on.Thanks to the Godfather Steve Wright. Miss ya Steve.God bless. Thanks for posting.
Don't remember that happening to radio 1.stev Wright mention it was 10pm not 10am stev sounds nervous which was understanding as it was his first time on a big station
Lovely to hear how Steve sounded (understandably) trepidatious in his first couple of links - but by 15 minutes in was totally loving his big new experience, and was brimming with confidence. ❤
Gosh, first link is all about me me me, I'm on radio 1, I'm sick, I'm new here, I'm so happy. The BBC really see their audience as just lucky to have them and a bunch of ungrateful peasants who they have to keep entertained. A lot of BBC radio was like that back in the day and when I got to commercial radio I was shocked to discover the focus had to be on the audience, giving them a reason to stay listening, to interact with us or share the station with others; maybe the sort of thing you have to grapple with when people can choose to pay for your service or not. It was a shocker but it taught me the value of thinking of others and how to serve them, something I fear Steve Wright and his cohort never quite understood.
So good that it was worth suffering AM reception to listen in. His style never changed over the years, he always seemed like that old mate who was always there.
I probably listened to tis at the time as I had no tv at the time and all I didi was listen to radio 1...remember Steve with Mike Read with the Read and Wright show on Saturdays i think in '79 ..this must be when he got the show all to himself
When he started pick off the pops they stopped him singing at the end of the songs. Never knew sang along from the early days. Sunday love songs is now flat with what they’ve brought in
It’s a matter of tast but you can’t go wrong with Gary Davies as a temporary sit in.Sunday love songs has gone flat with presenter which was only to be expected with what I’ve heard her do sitting in for other resenters
Gary is a natural. I’d quite like him to be permanent. But U can’t imagine anyone else doing LoveSongs. That really was Steve’s show. I feel they should have ended it when Steve passed. RIP Steve.
I see Tommy Vance gave his producer Trevor Dann a mention, years later to be one of the hatchet men of Radio 1. By the way, this is great audio quality. Doubtful it came off the AM broadcast 🤔
anyone know anything about Steves funeral ?...we had to listen to SARA COX crying down the mic the day he passed, now shes laughing and joking and not a mention of his funeral !
@@highpath4776 Radio 210 I think ?, before moving to Luxembourg. But even so, if he had started on BBC local stations or college radio, stations like Luxembourg and Caroline, I believe, allowed jocks to experiment and find their own style without too much external input. The number of people that started off on these stations and moved directly to Radio 1 was quite high, over the years. Perhaps poaching is a bit unfair, as those that did move, probably had that career path in mind anyway. Best radio presenter the uk as ever witnessed 👌r.i.p Steve ✌🏻
Totally agree with that!
First show, first link and didn't sound nervous at all, what a pro
TV on the radio. Loved him and Steve Wright. Modern DJs cannot hold a candle to them.
I was living in Harlow , Essex in the early 80s and listened to Steve and many other great DJ S 👍🫠
I live in the Netherlands and listened to Steve every day in the afternoon on the medium wave in the 80’s. Loved the show!
Two legendary broadcasters gone.good memories of more innocent times. They don't make em like this anymore. Best wishes from Scotland.
I was 21 , great music times on the radio with the brill Steve Wright 😁

Such a talented guy. Very much missed by so many. You have to wonder whether future generations will be blessed by such great entertainment... 🤔
Tommy vance another legend ..
Absolutely!

was really brilliant at this was Steve. Never been a show as good as Steve Wright in the afternoon in the late 80s on R1. Easy life!!!
Amazing stuff. Thanks for posting. So sad he's gone.
How superb to hear this, and Tommy Vance at the start.
Just give me a Time Machine so I go go back and immerse myself in the best era ....... this brings back such happy memories
John Lennon was still alive when this was broadcast. What a long career Steve Wright had.
Just thought that ❤
Didn’t he sound different back then!
What a broadcasting genius though, very much missed, and gone too soon.

By the end of 1980, Steve was moved to 10am on Saturdays when cutbacks meant Radio 1 was forced to closedown at 7.30 on Saturday nights.

Back in the days that radio 1 was worth listening to!!!!!!!!!

I wish I was 8 years old again, back when times were simpler. In fact.....keep the technology as advanced but the simpler times and I'll be happy.
times were simpler, that is a fact. people who say they weren't just don't know
So many teen memories of Steve Wright In The Afternoon. Brilliant DJ.
This was lovely to hear. Thank you.
Radio 1 was unmissable back then, interesting that Steve was put on an evening show at the beginning.
A lot of new DJs were put on evening or early morning shows when they started.
just feels like home

AM sounded great here, no problems.
I was 14 and full of dreams 😘

After Radio 210, from Reading, Berkshire
As slick 44 years ago as only this year, mr consistent, much missed.
so sad
You can really hear the Kenny Everett infuence in his presenting style here.

What's pick of the pops like now?

@@michaelisherwood7146 Agree. I can’t remember her name either, I remember she used to resent the TV show Popstars.
It’s not her fault it’s Liz Truss in disguise that’s now running radio 2 that trashing the station

When they used to do end credits. Totally forgot about that
Radio like it used to be.
wow....Mr Consistent
Jan 1980 I was listening to Capital Radio, or out playing in a band (brass)
anyone know anything about Steves funeral ?...we had to listen to SARA COX crying down the mic the day he passed, now shes laughing and joking and not a mention of his funeral !
priceless Steve
STYX 6 minutes to 8, is that Frank Spencer?
Still a tragic loss a one off
Back when the BBC had the benefit of Radio Luxembourg and Caroline to poach ready made talent from.
Steve had come from BBC Local Radio ? Nice Boomtown Rats Album track on this one !

Trevor Dann 😮🙉😳
Sounded a bit like Kenny Everett
Some hooter
