- Steve Wright has signed off from his final daily BBC Radio 2 programme after 23 years as a fixture in the station's weekday schedules. One of the longest running daily radio programmes in history, Steve Wright in the Afternoon, originally began on BBC Radio 1 in 1981 where it ran for 12 years.
The DJ delivered a heartfelt speech during the last edition of Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Friday.
He said: "I want to say thank you to you for your appreciation, our dearest listener smashing and loyal, for all the reaction and all the nice words."
He stressed that he was not retiring, and will keep his Sunday morning show.
Wright will also launch his Serious Jockin' podcast on 4 November, and will present special programmes on the station including for National Album Day on 15 October and at Christmas.
I can’t believe that Steve Wright has passed away. I have grown old listening to his lovely warm voice in the afternoons. Life will never be the same.

I'm just absolutely gutted. 40 years of great radio and now hes gone! So sad. Radio will never be the same. Rest in peace Steve, bless you 💙
This is the saddest news😢....a light has gone out of my life. Such a lovely man and so talented. He brought life and laughter into our lives for so many years, I can't believe he's gone 💔 RIP lovely Steve.
Couldn't put it better myself tillymint, Steve will be dearly missed RIP. Steve.
I agree with everything you’ve said. Lovely Steve indeed. I’m brokenhearted 😔.
Oh vomit!
I'm only 26, but I've listened to Steeve Wright since I was a kid. He was the voice during my homework after school, the voice towards the end of my awful shift work, now working at home I'd turn up Steve Right every single day. I loved Chris Evens, Steve Wright and Simon Mayo drive time. Bugger you BBC. That's me turned off radio two now, and the licence fee well that will be where the sun doesn't shine.
I could have written this myself, just changed 26 to to 56. 😄
Wright
You're such a big fan, yet you don't know his name is Steve WRIGHT?
Jeez man. It would've been nice to get his name right after all the years of entertainment you claim he's given you for nothing.
@@ac9110 sorry I am dyslexic. I have corrected.
Britain's greatest DJ ever will be so sadly missed RIP Steve you brought us great radio for so many years.
Agreed he was one of the best i grew from a boy to a man listening to him but you can't go without mentioning the man that was John peel he was too one of the greats of the airwaves and was the last of the djs on the airwaves to play whatever he wanted, you could go from techno to motzart in an instant. 2 of the greatest to have to privilege of listening too. Sad day.
I preferred Roland Rat
How can you love someone you’ve never met? I so enjoyed listening to the programme on my way home from work every day, and tuned in to Sunday Love Songs too. It’s like losing a really good friend. So sad. I’m finding it hard to believe I’ll never hear him again. Farewell, dear man, I hope you know how much you were loved by so many. Rest in peace and God bless. 💔🙏💔
The show was definitely unique, there will never be another show like it! Come back Steve , please Xxx
Greatest hits await me thinks
@@peteanderson4395Me too. Ken Bruce does a Morning slot. Another great DJ that was axed.
I'm going to miss Steve. He really cheered me up in the afternoon. His old sign off was really sad
R.I.P great presenter , one of my faves of all time....will be sorely missed
That's an absolute shame. Wrighty was such a staple and sound broadcaster. What a decent bloke and Radio Legend. ❤❤❤
Bless you Mr Steve Wright, going to miss you. May your light shine on ❤x

Rest in peace, mate.
Thanks for entertaining us down the years ,a friend on the radio, Steve Wright. You'll be missed mate!
Scott Mills is the epitome of boredom. He makes Jeremy Vine seem interesting
Excellent replacement
He's boring as fark
No no...there isn't a DJ alive that could make Jeremy Vine interesting... Scott Mills is dull though
@@senorpasso8670 horrific replacement
Well done to Scott Mills raising that money for children in need, however it still doesn’t alter the fact that this guy is not in the same league as Steve Wright and quite frankly his show is boring same old rubbish you can hear on any cheap local or hospital radio. The only good thing about Scott Mills show is that you have to put up with it for two hours which is more than enough.
RIP Steve. You have given me 40 years of musical enjoyment. Never met you but I’ll miss you my friend.
Friend? Did you know him?
He brightened up many an afternoon and probably the finest radio DJ ever to grace the BBC.
Heard Steve W for the first time in 1980 and have been listening since, wives left me, friends have died and I'm now a lot older - thank you Steve, dont know what I'll do for laughs any more.
My dentist used to have him on in the background & always made me smile... Made going to the dentist ( nearly ) a pleasant experience...Steve , the airwaves have never been the same from 2 to 5 in the afternoon ...rest in peace , friend .
The airwaves will never again vibrate with the uninhibited carefree humour and absurdity of Steve Wright and that is an absolute tragedy 🙏 for radio ❤ Rest in Peace Steve 🥀📻🎧
I started listening to Steve back in 1983 on radio1. Moved over to radio 2 when he left and went there. My generation has grown older together 🤗

As a 57 year old,I grew up with Steve on radio 1 then radio 2,
He was and is the uk voice of gentle daftness.

Started listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon in 1984 when I started work as a delivery driver....he was laughter brightness and made my day bearable on the most mundane days...thank you Steve. R.I.P...
Radio 2 will never be the same again, we feel so eppty now its over, steve and all the crew, god bless you all.
This happy positive voice is going to be so so so completely missed. What a loss, thank you for the memories Steve. ❤
He's just passed 😢😢😢
Sadly missed by all. Loved his show, as did millions. God bless you, Steve. May your voice charm the others around you up there. You made a slice of my life just that much happier. Thanks for everything.
I miss his sing-song voice and casual conversation. He was my 'colleague' for years. I tried to listen to other shows in the afternoon this week - nothing touches the genius and professional calibre of Wrighty!!
The show will be sadly missed the afternoons will never be the same. 😔
Came here as others have said just to hear Steve's voice, soundtrack to many many afternoon through good & not so good times - Steve will be very much missed ❤
Such a sad day ..Steve you were my company when I was a driver and kept me entertained on my travels .going to miss you mate
I remember listening to Steve doing the Mr Mad after school, always loved listening to him, such an iconic voice. Will not be the same without him. I will stop listening now!! Just be tuning in on Sunday then
Four months on and I still really miss him. Without that team it feels rather empty in the afternoon's. I hope Radio 2 realise what they are doing letting all the oldie broadcasters go.
@OscarFerguson1 Steve and Co would have...
@OscarFerguson1He was a lot older than Steve, unfair comparison. Anyway, that just highlights how stupid the BBC is !
We shall all miss this entertaining man of genuine heart and easy humour.
Radio 2 will never be quite the same.
I grew up listening to Steve Wight What a legend God bless Steve. RIP.
This ends my days of being a Radio 2 afternoon listener. Steve was and is the best.
Just how I feel Steve and the team are part of our family, I felt like this when Terry retired from the breakfast show.
Both priceless.
Have worked as a tradesman for 35 years only know Steve Wright in the afternoon on the radio .you know it’s soon time to go home when you hear his voice will be sadly missed thanks for all the joy you have give me over the years it’s like a fellow workman is leaving the job ..😢😢
You really cant mistake that voice. Grew up listening to him. A True loss to radio. A true real legend. GOAT.
Been listening to Steve Wright for longer than I remember .... always an entertaining show and he is a true professional... my favourite dj ❤ can't think why radio 2 has done this afternoon listening just won't be the same. A hard act to follow. Such a dignified exit from Steve and his crew... Will be sadly missed 😢
Part of my younger working life, afternoons spent in the bakery listening to you and all the show contributors, Mr Angry from Purley, Chervais, etc. You put in a long ol’ shift Steve. You can take off the headphones for the last time. RIP Sir.
I am 85 years old and have listend to STEVE for as long as I can remember. A truly great broardcaster. THANKS STEVE and TEAM. You will be sadly missed. SHAME ON THE BBC.
This was a very sad day, who will be next possibly Ken Bruce ? Sadly all the little things in life that give us a small amount of pleasure are being taken away.
@@jasonclarke7422 Please don't... I know Ken is likely to be next on the list - and I will be truly sad when that day comes. Don't listen so much ATM because I am back at work but when I was home for a while with my daughter, his show was such a lifesaver, through a few difficult patches. Such a genuine, modest, witty and knowledgeable man. I went to a Friday Night is Music Night recording and Ken was so lovely, and warm in person like he is on air, quietly enjoying a pint before the doors opened.
*HI THIS IS JEREMY VINE.*
When he signed off so did I. Let's hope he gets a slot on a commercial radio.
Steve Wright in the afternoon IS daytime radio 2. It's that simple. He should be reinstated immediately and the people who want to try something new should go and do it at another station.
Just as we're heading into a few dark months we needed his friendly voice to help get us through things..crazy decision by R2..afternoons will never be the same..thankyou Steve ❤️👍🏻

Radio 2 defo have made a big mistake firstly dropping an absolute legend for god knows what reason other than the obvious and then secondly replacing him with Scot mills who has the personality of a plank. Il be turning over now after 2 pm. Are Ken Bruce’s days numbered?
I think we can all guess why the replacement is Scott Mills!,😫😫😫
That’s an insult to timber 😂
Saying that; mills produce saw-dust so I’d say that’s more apt as you can’t make anything useful with it😅
@@dorothybird4833 ... i don't know why Scott Mills, please tell me?
The trouble with Scott mills is he has three jokes and he has told them all now. So instead, he talks about his fiancé. every day. Zzzzzzzz

Gutted! This has genuinely knocked me for six. A voice I’ve listened to for many many years, in the afternoons and on Sundays. He made you feel part of the gang and family RIP Steve 😢
Like so many i've grown up listening to Steve, from Radio 1 to his slot on Radio 2, I can honestly say that no matter how bad things have been, and if you're having a really bad day, that opening bed at the start always lifted my mood, a true talent that can never be replaced, can't see any logic in replacing such an iconic show. 😢
God bless you Wrighty, the soundtrack of my life every afternoon, loved you always and always will remember you.
Honestly feel quite sad listening to this, loved the big show. It even feels sad listening to love songs now as it’s kind of a kick in the teeth of what we’ve lost in the week. Tried listening to Scott mills for about 45mins couldn’t stand anymore.Utter garbage. Hope you move over to GHR Steve with Ken and Simon 👍
RIP Steve Wright it was a pleasure
I was listening to Stacey Dooley jocking on Radio 2 just now...dear Lord , is this the route the BBC is going down?

Thanks for everything steve, you really was our friend in the afternoon and always keeping the worlds madness at bay…
Scott mills has some huge shoes to fill.... if I'm honest I don't think he'll be able to fill them.
A massive hole was created when Steves afternoon show got shunned for the boredom of Scott Mills...What were they thinking..It upsets me even more now after Steve's sudden passing what a shameful decision it was. Steve was the voice of radio in afternoons..a comfort zone for 3 hours each day, the show was amazing. It will never be back now.Thank you Steve Wright for being that radio friend to millions, an absolute pro..You will be missed 😭💔❤️
To add to the lovely comments from people the reality is DJ's like Steve Wright are sadly a dying breed...it's probably my age (65) but i think I've heard the best of the best. U'll be sadly missed Steve
Makes me sad thinking I will never hear lovely Steve Wright coming on at 2 each day......proper radio legend.........radio 2 just wont be the same :( easy listening and he always picked up the mood when he come on :)
If they aren’t already they should make all shows available on iPlayer with a time warp feature so you can basically just go round and ‘start again’ like they do with frasier on c4 in the mornings. I’d love for my iPlayer just to be able to ‘set the date’ and then choose the classic shows I want to run at the original time slot. Guessing they could use so to update the news and stuff in between…
RIP. Loved the show
Replacing a legend with Scott Mills wtf 🤦🏻
Did you feel the same when ed Stewart was replaced?
I’m 57 and listened to him back in the radio 1 days, he’s always been a nice guy, avoided all controversy because it’s not about him, or his sexuality, as some so called jocks could learn from nowadays. Getting a radio station to listen to that’s decent is getting hard. Best of luck Steve
His sexuality.? Steve was heterosexual. Totally Straight.
@@phoenixrising5088 you never read the comment properly, I was referring to radio 1 hiring talentless arseholes because of their sexuality ie gay before talent, and before the haters start I’m not a homophobe , talent before anything, whether it’s fat thin gay or straight
Just heard the news that Steve Wright has died. I’m literally in disbelief 🙁 I listened to his show regularly for 5 years in my taxi on my way to secondary school. He was an amazing presenter. He will be missed ❤️
Radio 2 will never be the same again, SWITA IS AN INSTITUTION, A gentleman who really knows how to entertain the masses, I know he sends wishes to his new host but this is a backward step for radio 2, Steve Wright & Ken Bruce make this radio station and the reason I tune in every day only glad he is still on air on a Sunday, enjoy your free time Steve you are a legend
You are so "Wright" I dont get their thinking. SW is a massive draw. Fair enough if he wanted to leave, pastures new and all that but you get the feeling that some "manager" has decided its time for a change - just for the sake of it... if that's the case then Ken Bruce/pop master better watch out... totally ridiculous decision...

I have to say that Steve has been very dignified about the end of the Big Show since the announcement back in the summer. He got the tone spot-on yesterday.
The end of the Big Show was also the final item on the 5pm news which followed. Nicki Cardwell ended it with the words: "Lord Wrighty of radio land, it's been an honour."
What she said sums up how popular he is with everyone at the station...a top bloke
BBC should do a mega show in remember the last 30 yrs
I suspect that he’s glad the decision was made for him ……he’s 65 …..time to go and take a rest and give the listeners a rest too .
Give me £650,000 per year for decades for talking in between records and I also would be very dignified when they asked me to go . I wonder if he also received severance pay as a thank you . . I shed no tears . The BBC is dying because of the cost of these overpaid disc jockeys .
