The second part of Steve's first show on Radio 1. I'm so thankful I kept this cassette - especially now, when we can appreciate hearing him at the start of his journey to becoming an unforgettable radio legend. RIP matey boy.

Fascinating report from 1984 about this offshore pirate radio legend.
Radio Broadcasting Today (1948) - The March of Time

A good quality version of this classic series. "Time marches on!".....
Sounded a bit like Kenny Everett
Back in the days that radio 1 was worth listening to!!!!!!!!!
wow....Mr Consistent
Gosh, first link is all about me me me, I'm on radio 1, I'm sick, I'm new here, I'm so happy. The BBC really see their audience as just lucky to have them and a bunch of ungrateful peasants who they have to keep entertained. A lot of BBC radio was like that back in the day and when I got to commercial radio I was shocked to discover the focus had to be on the audience, giving them a reason to stay listening, to interact with us or share the station with others; maybe the sort of thing you have to grapple with when people can choose to pay for your service or not. It was a shocker but it taught me the value of thinking of others and how to serve them, something I fear Steve Wright and his cohort never quite understood.
With a break in the 90s would be at the beeb for a long time; loved listening to that.
STYX 6 minutes to 8, is that Frank Spencer?
Rusling is a well known scammer and trickster. An accomplished liar, who will go to the ends of the earth to obtain cash in any way, fair or foul, he knows. Rusling has no conscience, and must never be trusted
If you are interested, I have some Steve Wright in the Afternoon radio shows from BBC Radio 2 from 2016 on: www.youtube.com/@by_antony
After Radio 210, from Reading, Berkshire
Paul Rusling was and still is nothing but a traitor to free radio and a charlatan
T V on the radio my fav DJ ever . ruclips.net/video/pkv0FdL3u54/видео.html
So many teen memories of Steve Wright In The Afternoon. Brilliant DJ.
I see Tommy Vance gave his producer Trevor Dann a mention, years later to be one of the hatchet men of Radio 1. By the way, this is great audio quality. Doubtful it came off the AM broadcast 🤔
I was living in Harlow , Essex in the early 80s and listened to Steve and many other great DJ S 👍🫠
First show, first link and didn't sound nervous at all, what a pro
I live in the Netherlands and listened to Steve every day in the afternoon on the medium wave in the 80’s. Loved the show!
Best radio presenter the uk as ever witnessed 👌r.i.p Steve ✌🏻
Totally agree with that!
I was 21 , great music times on the radio with the brill Steve Wright 😁
TV on the radio. Loved him and Steve Wright. Modern DJs cannot hold a candle to them.
This was lovely to hear. Thank you.
Two legendary broadcasters gone.good memories of more innocent times. They don't make em like this anymore. Best wishes from Scotland.
As slick 44 years ago as only this year, mr consistent, much missed.
You can really hear the Kenny Everett infuence in his presenting style here.
anyone know anything about Steves funeral ?...we had to listen to SARA COX crying down the mic the day he passed, now shes laughing and joking and not a mention of his funeral !
I probably listened to tis at the time as I had no tv at the time and all I didi was listen to radio 1...remember Steve with Mike Read with the Read and Wright show on Saturdays i think in '79 ..this must be when he got the show all to himself
Some hooter
This is when Britain was truly great no nonsense just fantastic times unlike todays garbage we have to deal with
just feels like home
sat night staying in and listening to this in 1980 must have been way better than staying in 2024 on a sat night and listening the utter nasty bilge playing on Radio 1 now
was really brilliant at this was Steve. Never been a show as good as Steve Wright in the afternoon in the late 80s on R1. Easy life!!!
I wish I was 8 years old again, back when times were simpler. In fact.....keep the technology as advanced but the simpler times and I'll be happy.
times were simpler, that is a fact. people who say they weren't just don't know
fkn'ell waited 44 years to find out it was a melted snowman.. ;) RIP Steve Wright God Bless You mate.
How superb to hear this, and Tommy Vance at the start.
Hey I did that recording of Roger when I recorded it in 1980 here -- ruclips.net/video/gvKDR8i4hSs/видео.htmlsi=Fhq4ZSSW6Z7I85Jp
His first show? Wow! Never heard this before.Straight from the off, he engaged his audience, and made them feel part of the show.Brilliant interpretation of what was needed to make it all work. From his first show, to his last he made you feel you were important. You were the important one! Not him or the artist. Not many could carry that off with sincerity. But Wrighty certainly could! The impressions were also there at the beginning, and all the 'bits and pieces' were already permutating in the background. He really was a one off! Such a special individual and broadcaster. So sad listening back to this, and thinking we will never hear his brilliance on the airwaves again. That is why all the clips of his shows should be played as much as possible, and saved for posterity. So a new generation can come in and pick up from where Steve left off, and create their own style. There will be only one Steve, but "zoo radio" will live on.Thanks to the Godfather Steve Wright. Miss ya Steve.God bless. Thanks for posting.
I was 14 and full of dreams 😘
Radio like it used to be.
Jan 1980 I was listening to Capital Radio, or out playing in a band (brass)
Still a tragic loss a one off
John Lennon was still alive when this was broadcast. What a long career Steve Wright had.
Just thought that ❤
When they used to do end credits. Totally forgot about that
Steve said 285 and 275 when the jingles and other presenters said it the other way round, Steve trying to be different?
Radio 1 was unmissable back then, interesting that Steve was put on an evening show at the beginning.
A lot of new DJs were put on evening or early morning shows when they started.
Trevor Dann 😮🙉😳
Back when the BBC had the benefit of Radio Luxembourg and Caroline to poach ready made talent from.
Steve had come from BBC Local Radio ? Nice Boomtown Rats Album track on this one !
@@highpath4776 Radio 210 I think ?, before moving to Luxembourg. But even so, if he had started on BBC local stations or college radio, stations like Luxembourg and Caroline, I believe, allowed jocks to experiment and find their own style without too much external input. The number of people that started off on these stations and moved directly to Radio 1 was quite high, over the years. Perhaps poaching is a bit unfair, as those that did move, probably had that career path in mind anyway. But there was a sort of National training ground and somewhere they’d get noticed, before switching to R1. Now the BBC just seem to use presenters off the TV.
Tommy vance another legend ..
Absolutely!
There’s no doubt about it : no contest : nobody will ever hold a candle to Steve : he was the master of upbeat disposable radio : Steve was the MALT on a shelf of blended cheap whiskies : Steve is simply irreplaceable : but thankfully due to media nowadays we can all pop in and get a little fix of Steve : thanks for uploading , really enjoyed hearing Steve at his best. RIP
This was when Radio 1 was a really great radio station to listen to. If Radio 1 still sounded like this, I would still listen to it today. I stopped listening to Radio 1 in 1993, after the Matthew Bannister purge of the station.
Same here, Radio 1 was destroyed by Bannister, no station since has come close to how good Radio 1 once was.
wrighty was good wasn't he, much missed. iv not listened to him in years due to work etc etc but when I caught him on a Sunday now and again and I enjoyed it but since his passing iv delved into his past shows ( god bless RUclips ), and yeah ., he was a superb DJ, could easily hold a show on his own. RIP
What a natural.
