- Join me and Derek as we take a staycation in our home city of Chicago, Illinois!!!
This past August, we had a free Hyatt hotel night burning in our pocket, so we decided to use it at the Thompson Hotel Chicago!
In this vlog, we start with a hotel room tour to show y’all what to expect with a hotel room when visiting Chicago. Then, we paint the town! We go out for French food dinner and a comedy show on a Saturday night. Then, on Sunday morning, we head to brunch, check out the massive Air & Water show on Oak Street Beach, walk down the Magnificent Mile, and drink espresso martinis at the World’s Largest Starbucks - the Chicago Starbucks Roastery!

As a born Virginian and native New Yorker, Chicago has almost felt like a forgotten city. You CONSTANTLY hear about it in the news (unfortunately, not for good reason) and that’s exactly why I am intrigued. I feel it gets such a bad rep here on the east coast. My boyfriend and I are planning to move there next year without ever visiting. Videos like yours have convinced us it’s the best move for use right now. A world class city that somehow is still affordable. We can’t wait!
I think you will really like it in Chicago! My husband and I spent our 20’s in NYC and moved to Chicago right before we both turned 30 so we could feel more settled. Now it’s been five years and we haven’t regretted it once! Chicago is just a slightly easier city to live, raise a family, and save for retirement. And as long as you stay streetwise and avoid the dangerous neighborhoods (just like in any city), you’ll likely be just fine!
Excited for this. I feel Chicago is a city everyone knows but no one KNOWS (at least not international tourist). I definitely want to visit someday
Yes, Chicago is definitely an under the radar destination for foreign tourists it seems! Hoping we were able to peel back the veil a little bit and show some cool aspects of our city! I hope you get to visit Chicago some day, too!
Burrito FTW!!! I love the Sur La Table cooking classes. I’ve taken a few. That crate and barrel they yelled at me for taking pictures inside there one time at Christmas time.

That was a very spacious hotel room! The Chicago streetscape looked really lovely with all the greenery and outdoor tables, even if you got rained on! It seems very European it's not what I imagine when thinking of major US cities.
Yes, the touristy areas of Chicago definitely have great landscaping throughout! And then the neighborhoods are often tree-lined, which is extra lovely. We sure love this city and think other travelers would, too!
Harriet and I have been to Chicago many times. I'm sure there are many nooks and crannies we haven't seen. You know them. One day we would like to do a meet up and do some touring with you guys. I don't know much about Chicago except songs such as 'My kinda town, Chicago is' by Frank Sinatra and 'Chicago, Chicago' so I thoroughly enjoyed your video. It looks cool especially the old town architecture in conjunction with the modern. I never imagined it to be so upmarket. Be great if you did some more staycations as it certainly looks an interesting city. I never knew it had a beach!!! Thanks for sharing 🎺🥁👒☀️🎉
Thanks Jenny! So glad I got to show you more of our city!!! Yes, there are actually miles of free public beaches along Lake Michigan, and the most popular ones for visitors are Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach. It's funny because my Instagram post scheduled for tomorrow talks about this exact topic! I think it's really common for people to not realize we have beaches here because our city doesn't emphasize it given the seasonality. 😀😀😀

If we want to go to Second city, is it necessary to book tickets in advance? Do they sell out?
Yes they can sell out, especially for shows on weekend nights! Always better to buy in advance if you can. 😀
