What people fail to realize Prince wrote this music for these different people because he liked something about their vocals. Listen to I Feel For You Chaka Khan version that he wrote for her. Prince was a freaking genius and knew what he was doing when he put his music on the table. This original version was what he intended not the Sinead sound, which if you noticed he re-did it with Rosie Gaines because she added the necessary feeling it needed after Sinead's version. You gotta realize in 1985 this was some emotional shit, like most of the 80's music was so prince could hear this guy had experienced this.
Fortunately for me, I heard THIS versh 1st in Dublin on a pirate radio station and recorded it in stereo on a ghettoblaster and fell in love with it instantly. Nothing Compares to The Family imho!

If you stop and listen to the simplicity of the beautiful strings (not over produced).The compositions and arrangements by Clare Fischer coupled w/ St Paul's voice makes it better inn my opinion. I was tortured to no end by this song and often driven to tears. Even now, if it's quiet enough, I can lose myself in the moment and be that sad and depressed 18-year-old again. Then, as luck (?) would have it, I found this album on an import CD about 20 years ago, as it is WAY out-of-print.
No matter who you hear, Sinead put this song on the map. Yes, it's a great song, but it's a great song that would have never reached the notoriety that it did without Sinead. And, no matter how anyone feels, that's the truth. Prince even admitted that he only covered it years later because of the popularity it received from her version. And, when he covered it, he covered it in her style. So, when you hear Prince, you're really hearing her.
This constent bickering about "who done it better" is espacially funny in the subject at hand. Like comparing between your lovers both Prince and Sinead are doing the same but differently. Each to their own way and I personally can listen and love both versions as an individual versions because, with all honesty, both are amazing at what they do and achieve. At most I might prefer one over the other for mood sake. It reminds me a lot of the song "Easy" by Lionel Richie that been covered by Faith No More. I grew up on the latter but the original is great on its own right. Preferance aside, nobody did something worse than the other.

This version is more touching. I mean if you're missing your X, it's best to listen to Sinead's version. For the people that prefers O'Conner, whenever something is done over it's easy to make it chart-topping. For instance; I feel for you by Chaka.

Paul Peterson can sing in his own right, but it's not you--Paul very much IS trying to sing just like Prince. This was standard practice when Prince would write a song and produce it for another artist: he sent a cassette tape of the NC2U demo recording (also available on youtube) to Paul to learn the instrumentation but also to use as a 'vocal guide'. And the singer was expected to copy Prince's vocals nearly to a 'T', but in this case, Paul enhance the output and power on the vocals, compared to Prince's demo (maybe because Prince Prince was resting his vocals as his demo may have been recorded in the middle of Prince doing his massive Purple Rain tour).

He didn't write "I Feel For You" for Chaka. That was on his 2nd album. However, I agree with the rest of your statement.

I am a big fan of Prince but Sinead´s version is far better. In fact she uses the lyrics but adding chords that increase the intensity of the song.
She made it more mainstream, but this version is still the best.
