    The following is previously unseen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution from the summer of 1984. It was in this very room at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota that Prince created and committed to tape one of his most beloved and iconic compositions, which six years later would become a worldwide hit for Sinead O’Connor. Prince’s original studio version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" is presented here for the first time.
    Video directed by Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben.

    Folks I will say it again, you have it reversed, Prince is not covering this song, Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U in 1984, Sinead did her cover version in 1990. Here are some other songs you may not be aware of that Prince wrote, and either gave away, or that were covered by other artists. The list is huge, these are just a few. Manic Monday covered by the Bangles, this song was originally recorded as a duet with Apollonia, and some of the music/backup vocals by Brenda Bennet are still in place on The Bangles released version. I Feel For You covered by Chaka Khan, written by Prince in 1979 and released on his 2nd album of that same year. He gave a song called With This Tear to Celine Dion. The Glamorous Life and Love Bizarre on Sheila E's albums (and 95% of the other songs on those albums), is all Prince. Same for The Time with Jungle Love and The Bird. He gave a song called U to Paula Abdul for her Spellbound album. Sugar Walls was a song of his that he gave to Sheena Easton. For the song Stand Back, Stevie asked him to come to the studio to listen to the song, and that is where in 25 minutes, Prince laid out the entire keyboard track for the song, that is him playing on the track. Could go on forever, Prince was everywhere in music, most of which he never took credit for or cared to brag about. Peace

      Prince attempted to assault her (physically, not sexually) during a meeting because of something he didn't like about it. But you think some 5 foot 1 American geezer is going to get the best of a anybody who grew up in Ireland during the troubles? Not a chance. Doesn't sound like he was the best person ever. Sinead was a gem though, a beautiful soul with more troubles than Ireland, maybe she finally be at peace

    I grew up only a couple of miles from Prince's stomping grounds. I had numerous encounters with him as it was inevitable in the relatively small town of Chanhassen. He watched me pitch a little league game from underneath a tree at Lake Ann park near his home. I delivered pizzas to his house and to his studio numerous times when I was in high school. I was witness to his intimate late night impromptu shows at Paisley Park more times than I can count on two hands. Anyone who might suggest that he isn't the greatest live performer of all time simply hasn't seen him in concert.

He seen his mother abused, he'd been abused, felt like an outsider to his own race at times and his own sexuality. To me as a part Native American woman whom always have felt as an outsider to all parts of herself, Prince helped me to accept my uniqueness. It's my personal opinion that Prince was likely the most complete rock star we've ever had the pleasure of listening to and be entertained by -- he was an elite-level singer, songwriter, instrumentalist (of multiple instruments), composer, producer, lyricist, dancer, performer, choreographer, and showman.
    A very few in the history of late 20th and early 21st Century western pop music (all genres from rock, R&B, C&W, soul, hard rock, metal, and so on) can claim to score straight-A's on all of those categories -- Prince is one of those few and may, in fact, be the only one who can.

    So many on here still thinking this is Prince covering Sinead. Friends, you have it reversed, Prince wrote this in 1984, and 'allowed' Sinead to cover it in 1990. Now sit down for this next one, Prince also wrote Manic Monday and offered it to The Bangles, catapulting their careers, so now you all learned two new things today. Prince wrote hundreds of songs for other artists over the decades. Anyway, fantastic to hear Prince's original version in all its glory. Forever missed, Prince was filled with spirit, goodness, love and compassion, he was superhuman in so many ways, and is indeed a role model, not only as a musician, but as a human being as well. He represented the possibility that we all have inside of us to become better at who we are and anything we set our minds to. Looking into his eyes is like looking into heaven itself, because he was as pure of a spirit as they come. His presence simply cannot be denied. it is why the coolest, most fronting of celebrities, were reduced to the likes of a wide eyed teenage girl at a bieber concert whenever they were in his presence. He was the celebrities celebrity and the musicians musician, a status that was well earned and that he very humbly circumnavigated for quite some time. There will simply never be another like him. God sent him on a mission, and he fulfilled it with flying shades of purple.

      How can an Irish, female folk singer do a song written by a black funk, rock. R&B, soul superstar sing a song he wrote, better than him?
      Y’all love her but she had nowhere the talent of Prince Rogers Nelson!
      I know you want to give her credit over him because she’s one of yours but that’s just ignorant to think she’s better than him.
      Just standing on a stage singing in an off pitch voice while this man is singing, playing guitar AND dancing, you cannot be serious!😂
      Plus, I don’t like her - she lied on Prince saying he spit on her or assaulted her or done other BS after he’d written a hit song for her!😡 Prince knew LOTS of women and none have ever said he was aggressive or violent towards them! Guess that’s what he gets for helping the likes of her!

By taking full control over the direction of his work, Prince was able to shape the sounds that still influence countless musicians to this very day. Prince's multifaceted talent on numerous instruments was crucial to his musical legacy. Absolutely mind-blowing! Prince's original version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a testament to his unparalleled songwriting talent. While many know this song from Sinead O'Connor's powerful rendition, hearing Prince's soulful vocals is a deeply moving experience. The raw emotion and vulnerability he brings to the lyrics are simply breathtaking. It's a reminder of his incredible range as an artist and his ability to connect with listeners on a profound level. Thank you, Prince, for sharing this timeless masterpiece with the world. Your music continues to touch hearts and souls. 👑🎶

    • @jayleeds2006
      @jayleeds2006 6 лет назад +6

      Yea, but I used to do these kinds of splits when I was younger.
      I think jumping off of pianos into splits and doing 12 to 20 splits back-to-back (like he did on Rave U into the Joy Fantastic) where fine for him, in his 20's, 30's. ...but not 40's.
      ... I don't think the injury was cumulative, because he didn't slow down, he stopped doing splits all of a sudden. Which makes me think he may have injured himself during a particular incident.
      He joked during the Mill City concert, that he wasn't going to be dancing a lot because Kirk or someone had kicked him in the hip. This was in 1999. Prince had turned 40 the year before.
      You have to warm up and be more careful with your body when doing athletic stuff when you're older, but in your mind, you're still 23. Especially when you're Prince, looking in the mirror, he looked 20 something into his early 50's.
      I think he was pain free, up into his early 40's and just didn't properly warm up, had an accident and injured himself.
      Unfortunately, medical science has not advanced to the point where we can relieve pain with substances (like opiates) that can don't cause addiction. But hopefully one day we'll understand the human nervous system well enough to fix one thing, without risking dozens of dangerous side effects.

    • @denrosz

      jayleeds2006 ... on September 29, 1998 I was on my way to Cleveland to catch Prince play there, and then return to my home in Detroit for the concert on September 30th, which meant Prince was 40 years and almost 4 months old. The shows were cancelled, and we heard rumors of a foot injury as the cause. Prince rescheduled the Cleveland show for 10.22, and the Detroit show was performed on 10.24. Prince never did the splits after the cancelled shows (and may have not done them for a couple of years prior), as far as I know. So that may have been the beginning of his pain issues, that changed his life. Damn ... what a shame !!!

    • @jayleeds2006
      @jayleeds2006 6 лет назад +3

      Whoa, man... I didn't know about that, but it definitely fits in to what I suspected. He only gave himself a month to heal. Probably should have taken easy, but he had something driving him. He had to keep going.
      It's very tempting to push yourself physically. Prince was in excellent shape. ...but you still have to be careful as you age.
      But this guy lead a great life though and contributed a lot. From his interviews, that hip injury was probably was just a small price to pay for what he wanted to contribute over his career thru music, dance, etc.
      Even if he knew in his 20's that he could possible get hurt, I think he'd still do the splits, the same way boxers and football players know they could get hurt. He was athletic. He was compelled by his music to do spins and splits etc. That kind of dancing was just another part of his artistic expression.
      On a positive note, even knowing the potential dangers, I don't think he would have had it any other way.

    • @denrosz
      @denrosz 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, I agree with your words, and I don't think he would have had it any other way either. He was born to perform and take it to the max. You can see him leaping in the air in some of the Rave promo shots from 1999, and so he probably pushed himself through the pain at times, and it worsened to include a hip injury that contributed to the pain meds he had to take.

He just worked, worked, worked to perfect what he wanted each song to be, sound like, look like .... So much love for this human being.

    Sinead stripped all that background noise away to her pure pained voice. Prince wrote the song but she made it ❤
