- Another Lonely Christmas was released as the b-side of the single I Would Die 4 U, the fourth commercial single to be released from Purple Rain, released worldwide. It was also included as the a-side on the promotional release Syndicate, available in Japan only at around the same time. In 1993, the track was included as the 17th track on The B-Sides compilation album.
Basic tracking took place on 18 February 1984 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (five days after Noon Rendezvous, the day before recording Pop Life). Although credited to Prince and the Revolution, only Prince contributed to the track.
As the lyrics state "Last night, I spent another lonely Christmas", it is appropriate that the only time Prince has played this song live was on 26 December 1984 in St. Paul, MN, USA.

My little brother 💙 was a Serious Prince Fanatic. Loved Him Some Purple Highness. He was murdered when he was only 22 years old. I was 23. I miss my little brother 😢 terribly to this day. Every Year,I Play This Song For His Memory. Rest In Peace, Benjamin Roy Hitt.🙏🏽

Losing a younger brother is something different. Wishing soo much that you can see them grow with you and becoming their own person while still looking up to you for guidance. It’s soo unfair. Not only were they robbed but you were too. Remember his smiles.
I worked at Round Table Pizza in 1984 and this song was on the jukebox. I was in charge of opening every morning, spending hours cutting vegetables and setting up. I played the MESS out of this song!! Over and over...lol. My co-workers got so mad at me...lol. 💜😁

I grew up in Detroit. Back in the day we had a D.J. called THE ELECTRIFIYING MOJO! He was a real prince fan...anyway he would lock himself in the D.J. booth and play prince for hours!! He would play the whole album front to back..not just the popular stuff!!!

I thank Prince for making this emotional song, as it is the only option to express my grief for my lost friend and nobody in my surroundings want to hear about my mourning, because they're jealous. I met George in Studio City outside of Blockbuster Music in the late 90s. We chatted for a few minutes. He said he was bummed his records weren't selling like they used too. I told him point blank he had one of the most amazing singing voice I'd ever heard and he'd already sold more records than 99.9999% of everyone else on the planet had and everyday all over the world people not only loved but NEEDED a George song during the day.
(It was just crazy I was having a conversation like this with a music icon. Just goes to show no matter how successful or famous someone is they still deal with the same issues as others)

Your comment killed me, it took me to where the music was luring me to. Low down somewhere in the depth of my emotions. There is something dark about this song that sinks deep into my soul. That first section with the descending notes esp. As the notes waltz down I feel that characteristic deep, beautiful, sinking feeling that only Prince's music summons. Prince's passing comes to mind. I feel his spirit and the music hurts like a friendly dagger stuck in the middle of my heart in a bitter sweet fashion. It's just overwhelming. Sublime!

This was the show I wanted to attend because it was my birthday. But instead I was at the Christmas show. (I'd really love to see/hear any footage from that show but there just doesn't seem to be any sadly.) I still remember how excited my friends & I were that we got three shows for Christmas and we got blessed with 3rd row seats for 1 of them.

A two minute Google search of my name, which I proudly display for all to see, would reveal that I am NOT a liar (as another has alluded to) and that I DID know Prince personally. (I even experienced him composing "Another Lonely Christmas.") I know that he WAS a religious man, even "back in the day," but I also know that he struggled greatly with his faith and spirituality as is evidenced in his early, more risque subject matter and lyrics.
All that aside, I miss him greatly. His death still weighs heavy upon me. And I regret never having had the conversation with him that I'd wanted to have since our parting of ways on October 3, 1988...

@@Donna777 There's actually two Mike Oakviks in the Minneapolis metro area. (And we're not even related!) One of us was from Brooklyn Center while the other was from Fridley. One of us was a doorman at First Avenue which led to bodyguarding Prince. The other was not. Does that help with why the name sounds so familiar?
