One of the most beautifully complex pop songs ever written. The movement of the strings over the pulsating drums is pure genius. Honestly I am not mad that it is oft overlooked as we all know most great things often are. But those who know, know!
This was the first version I heard, back in 1985. This album is SO good. Sinéad O'Connor's version is just as good - but a different tone. May she rest in peace.
St Paul was on the tour with us of Paisley Park. He played this song on one of Prince’s pianos in Studio B. It was jaw dropping. Both my wife and I cried our eyes out. He’s really talented.

The gorgeous strings you hear on this song were arranged and contributed by the late, great (and very missed) Mr. Clare Fischer, who at Prince's request contributed classical string arrangements to other songs on the album this song is from, plus a number of other Prince-penned songs. Prince sought out these occasional collaborations with Clare over the course of at least two decades of his career. I felt the same way. I lived in Minneapolis during 1983. God, just Prince haven then. This was the ONLY version I listened to, I really hated that Sinead version. But I think it brought him some fans, so good for him.
I was also 17 or 18 years old, when this song and album came out. This is the time that the relationship with my high school sweetheart was on the skids. Even then, I still wanted to marry her at the age of 18, right after high school and join the military, while she goes to college to pursue a career in journalism. I had it all planned for us as a couple. I 4:33 was going to take care of her by sending her money for her college tuition, books, and stuff, while I was out in the field. But unfortunately, u 4:33 it didn’t turn out that way. At any rate, she’s been happily married for a long time now, with her husband and three children. And really, that’s all I wanted for her, is to be happy, which, she seems to be. I can’t ask for anything more than that, can I? But she still can’t stop me from loving her from afar. And like I said before, I know her husband is a good man, because she is a good woman, and my high school sweetheart doesn’t chase after poor-butt guys. So, to you, Mrs. Cynthia Sherrill Cannady, husband, and family, I wish you nothing but success, love, happiness, and peace in your lives, forever! Peace!
I love this whole album. St. Paul was such a baby. :( Such memories. Tired of bandwagon know nothings saying he wrote this for Sinead. Lord! #TheFamily #fDeluxe
There was an article on Yahoo today about Prince's proteges and there was ne'er a mention of The Family at all. They had the audacity to include Sinead amongst them. People were saying Prince wrote the song for her and I corrected them quick, fast and in a hurry!! What she did to that song was a travesty...sounding like she was yodeling!!!!
Because it was considered to soulful and therefore was labeled r&b and we both know that r&b music has a difficult time crossing over. Sinead was mainstream and therefore had the vehicle to move the song into the mainstream as well! You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine and Sinead's version was whiney and screechy and there was none of the original soulfulness and feeling that Prince intended for the song.
You have to remember that back when Sinead released this, a lot of articles said he wrote this for her. People were misinformed at the time. I, too, thought he wrote it for her back then. There is no reason to get mad at people for being misinformed. I love Sinead's version and just because someone doesn't like it doesn't make it bad. Music resonates with different people for different reasons. I like this version, but I like Sinead's vocal and emotional delivery better. It may be because it's the version I heard first. Sinead was also relatively unknown at the time in America. This is the song that really broke her here. We all have our preferences, but I'm actually able to say I like Sinead's better without having to insult the other version of the song. Have a great day everyone.
When Sinead O'Connor did her version I was telling everyone that a group called the Family sang it years before and no one believed me! Even I didn't know Prince had sang it first even though I knew he made it.

Yes all right my love
Likewise...
I have their original album on cassette and cd. Acquiring the cd was not easy after 2010. I had to import it from Russia. Great music!
The only one to me, not even (the writer) Prince's version.
Me too!
bestest version by far ☺
before Sinaed. this is the original. it was beautiful then and even more powerful and beautifully done by Prince and Rosie Gaines.
I like Sinead's version best
Thought Prince recorded the original
This is the version I fell in love with. But I do love prince and Rosie's version
Listen to the chris Cornell cover
This is the original, with Prince singing. ruclips.net/video/cpGA0azFdCs/видео.html
This song is so beautiful. it brings tears to my eyes
I was in a record store and saw this album in 85 with my friend and we had to buy it……had no idea is was prince but soon found out. Freakin amazing record and I just miss him so much 💜
This song. First heard it while stationed at Ft Knox back in 86-89. Only version I like
I still get chills from this masterpiece
I will never for the life of me understand why this song wasn’t bigger for them….
(It even had that Sax solo which seems to have inspired someone from I will always love you. )
Unreal.
THIS was the Original Version..this song didn't get Recognized until Sinead O'Connor sang it.. But this album was my favorite and i still own it.. Back then it was so ABOUT Prince productions for me
HE'S BEEN GONE 4 YEARS TODAY AND STILL INFLUENCES THE WAY WE HEAR MUSIC. THANK YOU, PRINCE. 4/21/2020
R.I.P to a true music icon and amazing musician.
Love and respect to all who have sung this song with sincerity.
rest in peace sweet Prince.
I love this version. Why is it so hard to find tho! My sister had the record (yes record) when I was a kid. Loved hearing it. So emotional. I hate that everyone hears the Other popular version without knowing about this one.
Omg yas I said the same thing. Happy I found it. Brings back some great memories.....
This version isnt even on spotify if you ask me :(
I feel the same
Don't be mad, feel lucky that you're one of the few who do know about this gem 😊
This is not a version. It's the original
You said everything we wanted to but didn't know how, thank you for being our platform to express our hearts
I love this Version the most!
I don't know why everybody talks about Sinead O'Connor so much when this is the original and the best version of this song
Prince wrote it. If any version was original, it would be his own.
@@nambypamby2147 It's not uncommon to call the 'first released' version The Original. Prince often made demo versions solely to pass the song on to someone but never intended for release.
Probably because it is the most recognised version, sold several copies worldwide, and these are recognised facts despite you being snippy about it?
Nothing wrong with you liking the original, but being nasty about the most famous interpretation is just unbecoming.
I prefer this version to the Prince Version even…..his voice is amazing. And I guess blended w hers as well.
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling! Still breaking my heart all these years later... wouldn't change anything ❤😊
still the best version, breaks my heart every time i hear it. those strings/synths...
WHAT????

My Fav version 4 sure..takes me back 2 85. Wow! Mr Nelson the G.O.A.T....No famous person compares!💜
The Family were and still are my favourite band of all time. Only 1 album but absolute Genius. Well done Prince Rodgers Nelson for unearthing this group of talented individuals. 💔
Talento para interpretar, porque prácticamente todo lo hizo Prince, creo que la mayoría de las canciones
Did he sing on this version?
@@MegaWooMan no he didn't. He found the members and created the group. Some he had worked with before, like Eric Leeds
A response to my previous post brought me back - I'm glad for that. This was great.
I remember finding this at the record store. I played it daily for weeks. There were no titles to the songs, just numbers. Beautiful piece of work.
It’s the original version of a classic song. I heard this version first when I bought the album. Still the best in my humble opinion.
Love The Family.I feel Prince’s fingerprints throughout. But St.Paul and Susanna stand out together on their own and they both sound electric together! Love The Family and Prince’s version equally. RIP Prince gone too soon you are missed 😎☮️✌️🎸💜💜💜💜
Speechless and shaking my head! This is. Jam!
That sax solo give me goosebumps!! Such a beautiful song, it brings many memories
Fantastic
Beautiful version..you are so missed my little man!
Was my jam Back in The dayyyyyyyyy.... I was kinda mad when Sinead hit with this one. I felt like this one was secret one for us fans... But, I great song is a great song. RIP Prince....
Frank Amirault Yes! I agree. The whole album is a hidden gem. My favorite protege album.
I felt the same way. I lived in Minneapolis during 1983. God, just Prince haven then. This was the ONLY version I listened to, I really hated that Sinead version. But I think it brought him some fans, so good for him.
@@MsMoesuckra any song that leads the people back to Prince is a good thing
Still the best version. Peace.
The St just shreds on this one. Amazing job.
Best version of this song. I wish they would release this album again. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I hope they rerelease all this stuff with a Parade remastered rerelease
Original version.....still tugs at my heart after all these years.
Thanks for sharing, I've been searching for this song, my favorite back in the day.
Definitely needed to hear this this sad morning.
Thanks for sharing!
This, song stl brings tears 2 my eyes!
This version is amazing! This is my first time hearing it!
always love u prince.. u're the greatest singer, song writer etc
Another beautiful song from a beautiful soul RIP MY PRINCE
This version was the best to me personally. I had this album and wore this song out!!
Peace!
RIP Prince!!! One of his greatest recordings!!!!
I love this whole album. St. Paul was such a baby. :( Such memories. Tired of bandwagon know nothings saying he wrote this for Sinead. Lord! #TheFamily #fDeluxe
As I said above...as far as I am concerned..this is the ONLY version!!!!
♡
Have a great day everyone.
to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE the family
I lost the love of my life literally 7hrs and 13days ago..that brought me here..I will be okay though..Life happens
I have a broken heart. My husband died, and nothing compares to him. Ever.
😢
A big hug 😘
for all of you remembering this masterpiece
i love you all, pass it on
Here in 2025 born in 1985 Sinèad O'Connor is the only person I've ever known to sing this song. But I am loving this!
Thanks for sharing the original!
The original and the best....
When Sinead O'Connor did her version I was telling everyone that a group called the Family sang it years before and no one believed me! Even I didn't know Prince had sang it first even though I knew he made it.
He didn't release it first. He let The Family release it first before he released his recording.
@@adc2327 The song was never released by Prince. He recorded it then gave the song to The Family. Same thing he did with many songs such as I Feel For You eventually being sang by Chaka Khan.
@@cjackson9627 i feel for you is on his 1979 eponymous record

Written by Prince, but sung first by The Family. Loved this album when it came out.
I love both versions. This version for its simplicity and Sinead's version for her raw, powerful vocals and vulnerability.
Damn, this is good, thanx for the feelings..
RIP great song I will miss him so much
I like the original so much more than Sinead’s version. This hits different.
This is the first time I heard this version…. GOOSEBUMPS 💜
This version is still my favorite
