It's crazy how long the B-52 has been in service. I wonder if the aircraft that eventually replaces it will even have humans onboard.

I dropped a few bombs on that island in the 1980s. Looks like they now have a camera in the bomb bay so no one has to crawl back there and check for hangers. Good idea.

Older jets smoked a lot during takeoff but the B-52 employed water injection to increase thrust during heavily loaded takeoff, making them even smokier than normal. The B-52 is the original "coal roller" 😆

They and tankers flew over our house frequently from Wright-Patterson AFB during Vietnam.
The 20mm radar directed gatling gun was removed from them. Dumb idea. They still had them when I got out of the USAF in 1990, and the G had the quad .50 M2 installation, also radar directed.
I mean to be fair they aren’t really serving in places where we don’t have air superiority anymore.
No point, if it's fighting a threat were enemy planes still needed to get within gun range, the USA would have already secured air supremacy, if it was fighting a modern force a turret would do fuck all against an anti air missile fired from miles away over the horizon
B-52 main weapon is cruise missiles they have the new version with 1550 miles range that's beyond fighter jet range and would be launching behind a carrier fleet or from near the RAF base in Cyprus.

Some view the B-52 as ugly, however it has out lasted any aircraft designed to replace the B-52, I served with the 92d Security Police Squadron around B-52's on 15 minute ground alert with special weapons and fuel on board!! We never had a mission fail because of the maintenance teams taking care of the bombers and tankers at Fairchild AFB. Thankfully that nuclear mission never had to be flown, otherwise none of us would be alive today!! Two life long systems, the B-52 Bomber and the Jeep!!

Old air force joke i heard some Years ago. When the last B-1B is retired to the bone yard the crew will be flown home on a B-52 🙂
I think its a great looking aircraft and I'm a Navy vet. Its amazing that this plane came out when I was a baby. I'm now 73 and it will be in service long after I'm gone. Its like a giant pterodactyl. Imagine pissing out 140 MK82 500lb. bombs.

Hello Minot! I spent many hours on that ramp as 5th BW Flight Safety.
The ground support equipment is an Air Start Unit and is used as a starter for engines... Ground Power Unit supplies power to the A/C
B52 big ugly etc.
scary how big a bomb is and then they add external hard points as well. in service for so long that baby pilots grow up with them and have left the service now. yet the plane carries on. they get retired when the air frame is done, not the sum of its parts that just get upgraded.
a bit like the A10
both of these planes were designed to do a job with out the usual pretty good looks taken into account. yet they keep coming back for more.

What's wrong with a tail rotor and do the intermeshing rotors make any difference?
Nothing is wrong with a tail rotor, however they're trying something new to see if perhaps we can make something better. The torque of each rotor cancels out allowing for it to function identically to that of a standard helicopter. They seem to be doing something right with that design, being it has the same engine as a Bell 205 yet is capable of carrying twice as much payload. (makes sense, 2 sets blades would theoretically generate 2x lift)
