Right! Just got my first MacBook coming from Windows where they feel old after like 2 years. Recently bought a 2014 MacBook Pro 256 gig/8 gig. It's very fast, screen quality is amazing, battery life is good (I can watch about 5-6 hours of Netflix). Amazingly they're now selling for $150 more than I paid about a month ago (mine was $625 refurbished from Amazon + $75 2 -year protection plan). Bought a clear case for like $12 on Amazon. It lifts it up a tad and has vent holes which keep the temperature down. *Only gripe* : no Touch ID. Laptops had this feature back in 2007 or earlier.
I have an old 2009 MacBook Pro and it has actually been pretty good after upgrading the RAM and moving to an SSD. The biggest issue is definitely the screen resolution and no longer getting OS updates. This sounds like a pretty good option.
Haha, just purchased a 2019 13inch pro and it runs exactly the same as my 2017 13' pro, only difference is the Touch Bar. And if anyone feels bad about using outdated tech, just know I'm still using my iPhone 6 from six years ago, cracked screen and all. Cheers!
Great decision mate. I like small and compact phone. I downgrade from a 11pro Max to an older 8 and I really enjoy it after few months. Now days any device larger than ip8 is too big for me.
I just got the 2015 MacBook Pro 13 inch. And I love it! While replacing the battery is quite technical, replacing the ssd is ridiculously simple. I mean REALLY SIMPLE.
I’m a graphic designer for a small business and just upgraded to a 2013 15.4 inch MBP. I owned a 13 inch 2015 a few years ago and sold it, the 2013 15.4 performs noticeably better than the 2015. I’m not a big gamer, but during the covid-19 stay at home order I’ve been playing Diablo 3 with absolutely no issues or lag and it looks gorgeous. I wish there was a CD drive so I could burn CDs, but unfortunately CDs are almost obsolete these days. It runs Photoshop and Illustrator together with no issues. No complaints with the machine at all! Love the longevity of MacBooks, I was using a 2009 with an SSD directly before upgrading, and it too could run PS and AI together. Great product, and for the $400 I paid it can’t be beat.

myo htet I’ve had my Macbook Pro for a couple weeks now and it runs great. No lagging issues and can handle Garageband and multiple Chrome tabs open at once. Apple products age very well. My only issues with it are this. The laptop does run a bit hot when using for a long time, maybe 2-3 hours. The battery didn’t last as long as I hoped but, the newest update of macOS Catalina 10.15.5 this month made it much better! Keep in mind this is just specific to my Macbook Pro Hope this helps!

It is also one with Retina display and USB A ports perfect for legacy devices. Will probably stick with these for another decade. Super worth it for lawschool, work and entertainment.
Maxed out MacBook Pro 2013 15 inch (16gb ram) still runs great in 2019... even with the new Catalina OS update. Brought it for 700$ on eBay last year, and I imagine working with it for at least 3 to 4 more years

I just graduated from Graphic Design school and went through the four years with this exact laptop, but wirh less SSD storage. Currently saving up for something new but it managed 100-page InDesign documents, modelling on Maya, rendering static images on Arnold, rendering video on Premiere Pro and heavy image files on Photoshop. Currently still does most of those fine but for some reason it can’t take photoshop properly which kinda makes my life a nightmare. This video made me less ungrateful though, just found your channel and I’m loving your content!

Ur comment is encouraging me to purchase a MBP 2015 13” coz i was afraid that it wouldn’t handle some edits but appears from what u stated that ur mac was dealing with big things
I bought mine (256gb 8gb 2.4Ghz i5) for $70 and it's been the best laptop I've ever owned. I've had it almost 4 years now with no issues. Just thinking about ordering a new i7 16gb logic board from aliexpress to speed it up a bit because I'm building a recording studio. Overall very happy with this late 2013 a1502 macbook pro! P.S. My dell only lasted 10 months before the screen started breaking and then I had to do some crazy ritual just to get it to boot up! Never again! Stick with the proven late 2013 macbook pro.
Great video! I bought my 2013 15 inch brand new and have been using it every day without fail. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
I still use my Late 2013 MacBook Pro to this day 8GB RAM DDR3 256GB SSD i5-4258U Intel Iris 1556MB I love it still to this day. It's been my daily driver forever. It's such an amazing device.
as an user of this mac book, i wouldn't recommand it to anyone that will be doing video editing or anything that need high performance, just because if you buy it now, you want the laptop to go on for another 2, 3 maybe 4 years, high performance task change fast, so your older mac book is not going to benefit you well down the road. but if you just gonna do some light performance things, like watching a movie, typing, ... then yes buy it, thats the only reason i am still keeping my mac book just for the light stuff
I'm buying a late 2013 Macbook Pro tomorrow, with an i5, 16GB ram and a 250gb ssd. It seems like the perfect workhorse for me, as I'm a media student and need to edit things on the go a lot.
I just bought my 15" mid 2014 macbook pro last year and I'm so happy with it. I have the specs maxed out and it just runs. Even in programs like Lightroom or Premiere Pro. It's my first mac and also my best computer of all times. My windows desktop is just kept for gaming. For everything else I rather choose the mac
Been using the exact same laptop. Usually running 2 VMs is a breeze. But, sometimes, when running automated scans in ZAP proxy it kinda lags. Besides that, I absolutely love this thing.
I still got mine, exact same configuration and everything. Got it when I was still in school for graphic design (like one of the other commenters haha) then I graduated and got a job as a designer and it still works flawlessly and just as fast as when I bought it. It wasn't perfect of course, I had to replace the speakers because one was blown after I removed my headphones and it was at full volume. Thankfully it was a very easy repair. Later the battery crapped out and had to replace that too, pretty easy if you know how, I had to use a strong string to get it out of all the glue but it worked in the end. Aside from that it's been awesome! That said I still bought a new windows laptop last year for design work because I wanted more performance to edit videos.

Still got mine and use often even though I have the new 2019 mac book pro. Still runs amazingly. My parents bought a £300 windows laptop and after a year 2 years, they just turn to crap! Apple is worth the investment they last a lifetime!
I'm very late to this comments section, but I got my 2015 MacBook Pro 13's delamination fixed in August of 2019, whereas I bought the laptop in 2015, so they definitely still honor the free repair as long as you did not damage the screen in any other ways.
I bought a used 2015 one with the same specs as the macbook in the video. I'm seriously impressed for being a laptop of Its age. Perfectly adequate for what I use It for.
Still happily running my Late 2013 13-inch. Geekbench 5 score of 689 (single) and 1547 (multi-core). Every time I check the specs of newer MarBook Pros and get out my credit card, I just smile and put the card back into my wallet unused. Running 2.4 GHz Core i5 that I bought as a base model with 16 GB of RAM. Upgraded to 500 GB SSD a year ago, and it's been great. The only real problem is that the speakers are blown, so I have to use an external blue tooth speaker or headphones. Original screen still OK, but a small bit in the corner of the black bezel is starting to show wear, but not on the viewing area. This is my main machine, and I abuse it. Love the keyboard; it's never been a problem. Editing huge photos in lightroom, and can edit in FCP. I love the ports, but in reality you still need to carry dongles for VGA anyway.
Nice vid! I have this exact macbook pro with 16gb ram. It works great still and since I can send big programming tasks to a linux desktop/supercomp on campus, I don't really need to worry bout better specs and can have more money in pocket
i bought mine macbook pro in 2013. i upgraded the Ram to 16 GB and removed the DVD drive and installed 2 1TB SSD drives. after those upgrades it became a super machine :))
I bought (2 years ago) a mid-2014 MB Pro with 16 gigs of RAM. Upgraded ssd to 500 gigs. Daily driver (only use my iPad Pro on vacation) and it rarely (spinning ball) lets me down. Am going to give my nephew when I buy a 14" MB Pro this year.
I have that exact same config 13” retina with 8gb ram and 256 gb SSD since 6 years now. I’ve been it as my daily laptop for CAD and Ansys too! I’m occasionally noticing some minor hiccups, but it’s still getting the work done to date! I’m planning to stick with it till Apple releases an ARM MacBook Pro
I just bought a used one for around 450. And while I would have liked it to not have small knicks on the screen it does a great job all things considered
I bought a 2012 pre-retina MacBook Pro just this month to try something other than Windows. I upped the RAM to 8Gb and replaced the HDD with an SSD and it does everything I would need it to. It doesn't hold a candle to my 8th Gen i7 laptop or ryzen 3600 pc but still a snappy little guy.
I have a Late 2013 15" MBP with the 2.3 GHz Quad-Core i7, 16GB Ram, 500GB SSD and the GT-750M honestly it is pretty great. I use GEFORCE NOW for gaming when I travel since the graphics card is the one thing that is quite out of date specs wise, but other than that it's totally useable. I had to swap out the keyboard in 2018 for $200 after I spilled coffee on it, which also included a new battery (They are one unit) so that has definitely given it a new lease on life. I feel that this laptop probably has another 5 years of life in it, at least. I can't imagine using a computer from 2003 in 2010, so I guess this shows how much progress has slowed on computers, and why it's worth buying for the long haul.
I've been using my Macbook 2013 for three years now. The only problems that I've faced is the lack of RAM. My device has only 4 GB which is certainly not enough for programming tasks. For instance, IDE's are a no go so you will have to opt for using VIM or alike instead. Luckily, I have another desktop which I use for heavier tasks.
I have a late 2013 15 in. It is an i7, 8 GB of ram. I don't do video editing so all programs that I need run fine. I do have the delamination, until this video I didn't know that it was an issue that could be fixed without me having to repair it. When running I can't see it. Wish I knew to take it in years ago. I had to get the battery changed as the old one swellled and interfered with the track pad. The repair shop guy told me to run it on battery to prevent that. I might call Apple about the screen but otherwise, I am happy with it and hope it will run for a long time.
After having the newer MacBooks 💻, I can’t see myself getting a laptop without having all USB Type C ports. I absolutely love this port and wish the my iPhone has it as well. So I will say the port situation depends on who you ask
Just fired up the 2013 15" MBP (i7 quad core, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M,) and it still seems pretty snappy after it's been sitting for a year. I was considering selling it, but after watching this, I now feel confident that it's probably got plenty of life left in it yet.
completely true. I got the 16 inch i9 for all the heavy 4k editing but when I need a laptop to just consume content or other tasks my late 2013 13 inch rMBP still works like the day I got it. Change your thermal paste though, the stock one was really bad and cakey.
I got this model since 2013 and very happy. But now thinking about upgrading but don't know which one! I should have put 16ram and I think i'll be still ok with!
I bought my Macbook in 2013 and i'm thinking about rebooting it. but im not sure that its a good idea, I haven't updated it since maybe 2014-2015. It has a lot of clutter and I can't seem to get it clean from old files. Should I Reboot it?
Thank you! My cousin is offering to lend me hers but the mouse and I believe the keyboard aren’t working. I guess when I get my hands on it i’ll be able to figure out if it’ll be good.
mine is still going strong when i got it almost two years ago, the shop i bought it from at least replaced the battery and put in a 1tb ssd, and it already came with 16gb of ram and a second gen i7
I am glad I found this. I am a photographer so I spend most of my time on lightroom because this has such a good screen and a good price I am trying to get my hands on one. Anyone who owns one please tell me if it runs lightroom or photoshop well.
this *IS* the perfect machine for such thing as long as the storage fast (which is) and screen is the most vital part processor side eh my i3 from same year ran fine don't hesitate most people in that scene are all dabbling to macs
Really interesting analysis, Mark. I've just acquired the 2020 MBP 10th Gen model, and I'm hoping it will see me out professionally (I retire in 2023) and also keep me amused as a daily driver watching movies and also composing on Logic.
I have this macbook, and it's still so much better than most of the laptops out today. If there wasn't so many bad macbooks that came out after this model I probably would have gotten a newer one by now. But now everyone says that the older macbooks are better, so Ill be keeping this for a few more years. I wouldnt be surprised If i go a whole 10 years with this macbook. I've deff got my moneys worth. I just replaced the battery and it's ready for another good amount of years until i decide to upgrade.
AwesomeMan2696 same here. The current windows 10 is so annoying with all the updates all the time and the retina of this machine is more than a match with those 1080ps from mid tier laptops these days.
I have the same base model. It crashed and its keyboard went crazy while I was using Microsoft Teams for online class. I just shut it down and it works fine now. Not sure if I should upgrade its ram to prevent it from happening again.
Got this late 2013 -4gb. Love the lighted apple ❗️...Working perfect, Microsoft office, photoshop. Replaced battery, EASY! ... about to replace SSD ...RAM is said to be soldered 🙁......
I still own the macbook after 6, almost 7 years(early/ 2013) It‘s still going strong, definitely enough for daily task, but when it comes to cutting videos or more difficult task, this laptop will not handle it well. So currently I am saving up for a newer model. But lets wait after this crisis has been over come.
This is my go-to machine, the best laptop Apple has ever made. I've got the 2.6 quad core with 16gb of ram, but I'm due for a new battery. I'm going to buy one on eBay and swap it out myself.
I have the exact same laptop but a mid 2014... same battery cycles number as well as the one in the video. I was super worried about the battery tbh I thought being at 785 cycles was pretty bad. How long do you think the battery will last before it starts going bad and needs replacement? I also downloaded battery health from the App Store and it rates the battery health at 72%
About to buy a 15 inch late 2013 for 600 Euro with 270 battery cycle. Is it worth it to buy the laptop considering the next Apple updates over the course in the next year's?
Did you ever upgrade from (macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6) to the Newer (macOS Catalina Version 10.15.1) ?... And was it worth the software update?.. I have the exact same MacBook Pro and specs.

The design is still modern to this day, looks cleaner to me than the new ones.
How can that look cleaner than the new ones I swear some people just love to hate 😁😂
Funny Crow calm down. People have preferences.
Funny Crow pretty much because when opened they look exactly the same, except for the keyboard and the smaller trackpad
Looool what
Except the larger bezels and lack of touch bar.
If u compare 6 years old laptop windows with this mac, u gonna see that apple was ahead of time.
with the same processor, amount of ram and SSD? nah man, nah...im using both since 2007, tbh my windows laptop still one step ahead.
I mean if u look at the design, build quality & display its much better compare to most of 6 years windows laptop. The slimness & lightweight

Ur comment is encouraging me to purchase a MBP 2015 13” coz i was afraid that it wouldn’t handle some edits but appears from what u stated that ur mac was dealing with big things
I'm on 2015 version, love it. Only problem was a screen (staingate) but I got it replaced in Apple repair program (4 years since purchase date).
Bought mine back in 2014, just the 15 inch model with 16 gb and graphics card. It is still running nicely :D
I have that MacBook and I can still work on Pro Tools 2019 decently anddd play GTA V on a Windows 10 partition!
mine still going strong in 2020. mainly use it as a media device these days so doesn't do much intense work
I bought mine
(256gb 8gb 2.4Ghz i5)
for $70 and it's been the best laptop I've ever owned.
I just got a 15" mid 2014 from a local used market for 480 usd, love it.
Is it good for coding??
Great video! I bought my 2013 15 inch brand new and have been using it every day without fail. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
Can it work for Adobe Photoshop and Illustration?
I still use my Late 2013 MacBook Pro to this day
8GB RAM DDR3
256GB SSD
i5-4258U
Intel Iris 1556MB
I love it still to this day. It's been my daily driver forever. It's such an amazing device.
SMR0M i got exactly the same spec. Only needed a battery replacement after 6 years of use. I bought another one for home use as well.
Kabosumama Doge Still running my stock battery. I’m at over 1200+ charge cycles. I get like 3-4 hours of normal web browsing
as an user of this mac book, i wouldn't recommand it to anyone that will be doing video editing or anything that need high performance, just because if you buy it now, you want the laptop to go on for another 2, 3 maybe 4 years, high performance task change fast, so your older mac book is not going to benefit you well down the road. but if you just gonna do some light performance things, like watching a movie, typing, ... then yes buy it, thats the only reason i am still keeping my mac book just for the light stuff
Just picked one up on eBay for $350, mint condition! Great review. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro intel 2 Duo that has served me well, time to retire it.
Runs well on catalina?
Chairul Dewantoro I haven’t update it to yet, currently running Mojave’s and runs just fine!
Austin Thompson which seller did you get that one from because I am looking to buy a MacBook Pro but not sure which seller is reliable.
One thing great about Apple is that it never goes out of style. well at least a decade yet still useful and durable.
Bought a 13inch late 2015. This was my first MacBook Pro. I love it so much
I'm buying a late 2013 Macbook Pro tomorrow, with an i5, 16GB ram and a 250gb ssd. It seems like the perfect workhorse for me, as I'm a media student and need to edit things on the go a lot.
GKT Pictures so did you buy it? everything works great then ? i’m about to get one but 8gb ram and 256gb ssd for my highschool years. is it ideal ?
Totally worth it. Provided you upgrade the hard disk
I'm still running a 2010 MBP tethering a 36MP camera into Capture One w no issues
Hey Mark , should I wait for the 2020 macbook pro 14.1 inch or just get the 2016 macbook pro 13inch with touchbar for 850$ ons sale right now ?
Yes
It works great still and since I can send big programming tasks to a linux desktop/supercomp on campus, I don't really need to worry bout better specs and can have more money in pocket
i have a 2010 iMac and a need a MacBook do you think the 2013 retina MacBook Pro is a good choice?
Works fine with 4k in final cut pro
i bought mine macbook pro in 2013. i upgraded the Ram to 16 GB and removed the DVD drive and installed 2 1TB SSD drives. after those upgrades it became a super machine :))
In France they still cost 800€...
I just bought a used one for around 450. And while I would have liked it to not have small knicks on the screen it does a great job all things considered
I seen cheap glass screen replacements on eBay just need a pick or plastic card, heater and adhesive to replace it
I still use my 13 inch late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina. Yes the screen was replaced by apple and its working just fine like i bought it a year ago
I bought a 2012 pre-retina MacBook Pro just this month to try something other than Windows. I upped the RAM to 8Gb and replaced the HDD with an SSD and it does everything I would need it to. It doesn't hold a candle to my 8th Gen i7 laptop or ryzen 3600 pc but still a snappy little guy.
just bought one with the same specs as yours, im absolutely loving it.
How much did you pay?! 💰
I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro. actually that's what I'm using now. and I think it performs great. its fast and the screen is amazing.
An update on this running big sur would be cool - apparently this is the oldest pro that can get it - is it useable?
Mine works better, even. Noticed less battery heating and overall good performance
I have a 13 inch 2019 base model for photo editing and its now my main pc. I love macs
it's a fantastic laptop
Rodrigo 2019?
Does it thermal tho
Lasse Boehlke-skogli yeah
Jeremy Eden lol I’m not, I’m a photography student and I have a part time job, this is no joke like many people say.... wtv
Just fired up the 2013 15" MBP (i7 quad core, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M,) and it still seems pretty snappy after it's been sitting for a year. I was considering selling it, but after watching this, I now feel confident that it's probably got plenty of life left in it yet.
Your complaining about the Mac, I am still using an iPhone 3GS with a messed up battery.
Dude....what a pro relic
Ohhh sheshh😂😂😭
completely true. I got the 16 inch i9 for all the heavy 4k editing but when I need a laptop to just consume content or other tasks my late 2013 13 inch rMBP still works like the day I got it. Change your thermal paste though, the stock one was really bad and cakey.
Is it good for music production tho
I got this model since 2013 and very happy. But now thinking about upgrading but don't know which one! I should have put 16ram and I think i'll be still ok with!
I can actually game gamecube games flawlessly with this device. I absolutely love my Mac.
I have the maxed out 15 inch model. Works damn good. You don’t have to buy a brand new Mac book to get great performance
I'm considering one of those myself!
I bought my Macbook in 2013 and i'm thinking about rebooting it. but im not sure that its a good idea, I haven't updated it since maybe 2014-2015. It has a lot of clutter and I can't seem to get it clean from old files. Should I Reboot it?
As in factory reset it? Yes, you absolutely should. And update it to the latest OS.
@@MarkSpurrell Okay, Thanks :)
If my wife and I didn't have a 2015 MacBook Pro that we share for this and that I would snatch up one of these.
Right, you pay more upfront but you get long service life in return.
I got a MacBook pro from 2012 13" 16gb ram 500gb ssd. For 2000 swedish crowns. In orriginal box with all booklets in it and all cables.
Thank you! My cousin is offering to lend me hers but the mouse and I believe the keyboard aren’t working. I guess when I get my hands on it i’ll be able to figure out if it’ll be good.
mine is still going strong when i got it almost two years ago, the shop i bought it from at least replaced the battery and put in a 1tb ssd, and it already came with 16gb of ram and a second gen i7
im getting a 13" 2010 for my birthday and i see this video. i just realized i have no money
I am glad I found this. I am a photographer so I spend most of my time on lightroom because this has such a good screen and a good price I am trying to get my hands on one. Anyone who owns one please tell me if it runs lightroom or photoshop well.
this *IS* the perfect machine for such thing as long as the storage fast (which is) and screen is the most vital part processor side eh my i3 from same year ran fine
don't hesitate most people in that scene are all dabbling to macs
Really interesting analysis, Mark. I've just acquired the 2020 MBP 10th Gen model, and I'm hoping it will see me out professionally (I retire in 2023) and also keep me amused as a daily driver watching movies and also composing on Logic.
Still using a Retina mid 2015 one. Has a i7 4780HQ, 256gb, but I replaced the SSD with a 2tb.
6:05 literaly what i did 2015 13' I7 16GB RAM and 256 SSD thanim williing to upgrade to 1Tb
Still using the Late 2013 base Model in 2020 it is holding up great even with 4 GB ram :)
The same is true for me.
I have the same base model. It crashed and its keyboard went crazy while I was using Microsoft Teams for online class. I just shut it down and it works fine now. Not sure if I should upgrade its ram to prevent it from happening again.
Which operating system do you use ?
Still using this beast of a MacBook Pro over 6 years later and I still love it lmao 🥳🥳
How well does this macbook stands with a 2019 i5 laptop?
mauauricio well trust me
Got this late 2013 -4gb. Love the lighted apple ❗️...Working perfect, Microsoft office, photoshop. Replaced battery, EASY! ... about to replace SSD ...RAM is said to be soldered 🙁......
I just get this Mac and really he is very cool ! Thanks for this video
Which final cut Pro version you use in this Mac ? And which iOS ?
I still own the macbook after 6, almost 7 years(early/ 2013) It‘s still going strong, definitely enough for daily task, but when it comes to cutting videos or more difficult task, this laptop will not handle it well. So currently I am saving up for a newer model. But lets wait after this crisis has been over come.
Get the 2011 instead. It supports 16gb of ram and has a dual core i5 too. It's easy to upgrade to an ssd. The latest OSX does work with a patch.
I also downloaded battery health from the App Store and it rates the battery health at 72%
Is the early 2013 macbook pro really different from the late 2013?
About to buy a 15 inch late 2013 for 600 Euro with 270 battery cycle.
Is it worth it to buy the laptop considering the next Apple updates over the course in the next year's?
awle no. Too expensive
Did you ever upgrade from (macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6) to the Newer (macOS Catalina Version 10.15.1) ?...
And was it worth the software update?..
I have the exact same MacBook Pro and specs.
