I have purchased rMBP back in 2012, right after announcement. Just because of screen. Picked i7 2.3/16GB/650M/256GB and never regretted a bit. That laptop served me over 3 years in Afghanistan, processed 50-60 thousand wedding photos and it's my main computer even today. I am typing this comment using rMBP 15 Mid-12. That is the best testimony for product quality and return of initial investment :) Now is time to buy 2018 model, BUT I still can sell this one for maybe 600-700 euros. Crazy, right? :)

I still have my siemens from 2008, I bought that one for 700 euro, meanwhile I bought two MacBooks, they both died.
Siemens has been open 1 time to fix charging port.
I can still sell it for 50.
      Apple's pay more, get less.

I feel you, I have the same configuration except for the RAM 2.3/8GB/650M/256GB.
I had just graduated from computer programming (C, C++, Visual C#, SQL, ...) and I remember how I was so torn between a gaming laptop or this 2012 15" rMBP that were around the same price. I went with the Mac as at the time it was the only laptop with a 2k display, integrated GPU, HDMI, etc.. all in 1.8 cm (0.71 in) which was great for portability and I figured I could use windows in a partition.
Oh lord how lost I was using Mac OS for the first time! Anyway it became the best laptop I have ever owned.
However I did experience issues/defects. I got a dead pixel out of the box and got a free screen replacement, then a couple years later the laminated layer peeled horribly and got another free screen replacement (out of warranty this time) both which would have cost $700 USD each! And about 2 years ago managed to get the battery replaced for free too! Now the speakers are blown (sigh) but it still performs smooth as butter after 7 years.
It would sound contradicting to say that it was 'the best' laptop I have ever owned after experiencing different defects, but the overall experience (smooth performance, display, ports, design and even apple's free repairs) still make it the best for me, compared to all the Windows laptops I used before -none made it past the 3rd year RIP- And still performs and looks better than low - mid range 2019 Windows laptops. I call it the laptop which in my experience failed Apple's planned obsolescence 'plans' lol

Angus Van Halen I’m think of trading in my 2016 13” MacBook Pro, base model, non-GPU and putting a little more money on top for a 15” 2016 retina with GPU. I use it as my main computer and i shoot and edit music videos and do music production, it was well worth the money spent to keep this laptop going at least another 2 years if not more, amazing product.

Wow i just bought one myself, couldn't be happier. It was from a 50yo man, it was in great condition and $550. I went to his house to check it and buy the computer and until i was there i was assuming it was a 8gb ram Core i5, was completely shock when i casually ask him how much ram does it has and he said 16gb. I was so happy when i heard that, then i asked does it has a Core i5 right? And he said no no, Core i7 3.1ghz. At that point i was thinking to myself this man doesn't know that much about computers he must be confusing, i've never hear of a MacBook Pro 13” 2015 with 16gb and a Core i7. When we started the computer up there it was, Core i7 3.1ghz and 16gb of ram. He said it was brought CTO for his company with the best hardware Apple could provide in that size, and they use it only when traveling overseas. Couldn't be happier with this new mac!

I’m using the 2012 again and thoroughly enjoying the more solid feel and infinitely better keyboard. I have had this Retina 15” MacBook Pro from new. It has been fantastic. I have had the video board replaced and the battery under warranty. It is still going strong. I specified 16GB ram and a 512GB SSD when I bought it. I still use it daily and the battery is at around 85% of its original capacity. I recently bought the iPad Pro 12.9” (2018) for work and I also video edit in my spare time. The iPad Pro renders the video sooo much quicker than the MacBook its unbelievable! Most of its life the MacBook has been plugged into 2 Apple 24” LED Cinema screens, which works really well with a Henge vertical dock. I ran Geekbench and the results were better than their standard spec for this age, probably due to the 16GB ram and possibly larger SSD. I plan on keeping it as long as I can. At almost 7 years old I’m still impressed with it.

Literally the ONLY problem I've had with mine is the battery needed replaced earlier this month (Feb. 2019)
    16GB Ram, 256GB Apple SSD, and 2.6GHz Core i7
Yes, The keyboard can get hot over the processor - especially during demanding games -- but never a chip failure. Not one.
But then my 2001 HP laptop ran hot too, despite 3 fans.
    -
I wonder if the chip issues were with a certain combination that allowed catastrophic overheating?
Did I hit the jackpot with the setup I chose? Maybe. Either way, I'd absolutely recommend my rMBP as it's still running so strong I have no need or desire to upgrade - especially with the complaints about the butterfly keyboards. (edit: And I absolutely LOVE the MagSafe2 charging. It should be the standard on ALL laptops in my opinion.)

I bought one about two years ago - mid 2012, 2,3 Ghz, 8GB Ram, 256 SSD (now a 500GB OWC) - and use it daily at work. I'm an art director, use tha Adobe package and am VERY happy with this. A real value for money. I see no reason to spend a thousand dollars more to have things done in two or three seconds less.
I'm having it serviced to a general cleanup so that it'll serve me for years and years to come. A great machine! Of course, a good buy is always a good start so, do your job and look for a nice unit if you opt for this machine.

I’m still using this exact MacBook. But mine is horrible. Battery is terrible and it’s so slow and laggy. But I love the design, keyboard and amount of ports. Sadly mine died at school (ironically) today, so I’m upgrading this weekend to a new 13”

I have that same MacBook, a friend gave it to me. It has a bad LCD, mine looks exactly like the one at 8:01 and it does not show any image, the repair cost is $450. What do you think, should I spend all that for this Mac?

My grandma gave me her old 2012 MacBook Pro for free recently (she kept it in like new condition) and I replaced the hard drive for an SSD and upgraded the RAM. It’s a completely different machine now. It didn’t take much to turn an old slow hunk of junk into a capable secondary computer. I hope more people make these small upgrades cause they revitalize these old machines.

Good video. I will say since owning a 2012 MacBook retina from 2015 to now, it’s been a killer laptop. I would like to bet that the 2012 MacBooks that are still around at this point are most likely impervious to the issues they were having from the yesteryears. I personally would never go older than the retina after using the retina screen for any time. The old unibody design is starting to show its age like a 86 Honda Civic. I just got the 2018 MacBook and can’t say I’ve been nearly as impressed as this almost decade old machine, but Vega 20 graphics leads me no choice but to switch.

I once bought a 2.3GHz late 2013 15” MacBook Pro retina and it was awesome. But a few years later, I decided to swap out the board with a 2.8 GHz mid 2014 board so I could get my display replaced since the anti glare was badly worn. And I also upgraded the thermal paste to liquid metal and when I play games, I manually run the fans at max speed to keep the machine as cool as possible. With such a good cooling system, my MacBook Pro probably could outperform a 2018 MacBook Pro or at least a 2017

I still use my Late 2013. Cosmetically it's in decent condition and the battery life isn't great, but overall it runs really really well. I don't intend to upgrade until its unusable. On top of that, I bought a new iPhone SE (which is still the best phone Apple still supports because of its size). I feel like Apple design peaked 4 years ago.

Milpool dude, get a battery upgrade before they make yours Vintage. They made the Mid-2012 Retina 15” Vintage when 2018s & Mojave dropped and then did something unprecedented and REVERSED this and SAID they were supporting until Dec 31 2018? Needless to say if you do your dedicated Nvidia/Retina 15” research you discover that Nvidia even made a public announcement the originated in the 2011 Unibody issue over lead free solder issue that the 650m had what they stopped short of saying was a design flaw and left it as “manufacturing issues” and tried to relate it to “batches” but it was clear the wording was to leave room for technically “accidental” flawless behavior because to say you are willing to fix something with the SAME flawed thing, you come close to violating consumer rights to an “actual” fix. Now if you watch Rossman group you already know that you NEVER fall for a suggestion you have one of these Nvidia chip “re-balled” and that it was the act of merely heating the chip to about 150F that occurred during the process that actually (temporarily) “fixed” the problem for perhaps a year and then stopped working! The REASON was the heat just caused the hardware in the silicon to shift just enough to make proper contacts and make re-balling a chip like 650m initially worthwhile.
So later, Apple themselves took it one step further after arguments over Apple’s manufacturing vs Nvidia’s role in all this and admitted that not just lead free soldered 2011s were affected, but so were Mid-2012 15” Retina and Early 2013 15” Retina and even created a replacement program that initially was a joke and they applied rubber to the top of the chip to “mash” it into the logic board using pressure from the rubber again the case! If you do it NOW, it’s an entire new logic board and even then one could argue it was not a fix because it replaced it with identical chip that had a questionable chip! So this program went until Dec 31 2016 or 4 years from purchase.
Well despite Apple knowing how to reach you, after all the have your damn email, Apple ID and everything else if they wanted to find you to tell you about a recall! Well I thankfully had purchased a refurb over and inability to source a 17” mid 2009 logic board in Oct 2014, so it became a great “trade” of some money and laptops. So in Oct 2018 it was still covered by program I never even was TOLD about but after learning from Rossman, I was thankful I’d taken in my Mid 2012 15” 2.6GHz 512SSD 8GB DDR3 Nvidia 650m 1GB DDR5 in May 2015, then again in 2017 and each time was given a new top case which is never a bad thing to have laptop cleaned out, never backlit keyboard, trackpad, and most of all a NEW BATTERY.
So still feeling upset my 2nd visit in particular was showing signs of extra behavior that initiated the program, I armed myself with articles, GPU panic, Kernal Painic logs even though every one was minor and I never loaded a word of work. So when Apple reversed support, allowing 2012 to be fixed in store, I was ALL other that and got it in a month ago in Dec 2018.
By a stroke of luck, my “e” key got broken during the new logic board work and I also got a 3rd new TOPCASE. So get that battery replaced? If it’s under 80% capacity you can bring in and $199 gets you a $700 repair. It’s sweet and about to disappear for you so by next fall I’m hoping you do it.

I opted for the mid 2012 unibody when my late 2011 15 inch pro started to have the typical and know graphics problems. It was cheaper, and I was able to upgrade it myself, which was super fun and surprisingly easy to do. All and all, i got a great machine, mid 2012 unibody with a 2.7 I7, 16gigs of ram, a new battery, and a 1Tb Samsung Evo 850 SSD i came in at under 800 for the laptop and call components.

I still use my mid 2012 retina MacBook Pro even today and the insane thing is that it feels just as modern as any Mac out there with Mojave on it. I’ve kept it well and it still looks just as good as the first day. I have upgraded the SSD to 1TB now but aside from that, it’s great. I really can’t justify the price of the current 2018 version, and have switched to windows to edit intense 4K video instead. But the MacBook is what I actually enjoy using for everything else.

I bought a mid-2012 Retina MBP just a couple weeks after they were released (mine is a 2.6Ghz i7 /w 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD). I've gone through three bottom cases (due to feet coming unglued), and replaced the top case because 4-5 keys on the keyboard stopped working just last year. It is still in daily use and runs as well as my 2017 Touch Bar MBP, if not better, both with the latest version of Mojave. By far the most reliable laptop I've ever owned.
