Developers and those working in the development fields are always forgotten in these kind of videos whether mac or pcs. Its always student artists and video editors and in pcs, gamers.
It depends what you’re developing, if you’re a web developer, you could get away with the cheap models, if you’re a game developer, look for the ones that’s recommended to gamers or video editors, if you’re not developing anything graphically intensive, and don’t want long compile times probably could go with a midrange model and don’t worry about the gpu. Unless you’re working with ML algorithms then you may want to try to get those to run on a GPU but then I also would not recommend a Mac for that tbh, also wouldn’t really recommend a Mac if you’re a game developer either, the Mac GPU’s are just too weak even if you buy a 2018 and 2019 model and you’re gonna want to run Windows for better game performance anyway.
I believe almost any development work in a modern IDE can be done on a 4-core machine with 16GB of RAM. If you're a freelance developer and you'd like to test algorithms and code functionality on-device, you may need a beefier MacBook Pro / a MacBook Pro + AWS credits or a separate Linux desktop PC w/ an Nvidia GPU. IMHO, most video creators don't account for developers since their use cases and environment vary a lot and they tend to be picky about features anyways. Just ask any IT department in a bigger software development company. However, I feel you and I'd love to see developers covered (or at least engineering students), since there're many of us who'd like to hear a second opinion on a machine or just learn about aspects we're unaware of. A simple example would be the Touchbar - I have heard mixed opinions about it among colleagues. I personally believe I'd miss the function keys. If you want to read more on buying a MacBook for development (my experience - and others' opinion, so far): - Colleagues of mine working in Web development and QA love the 15" MacBook Pros. They can install and use all browsers (Safari included), develop and test features on-device, use different resolutions and 'simulate' a smaller screen by resizing windows or dialing the resolution down without an external screen (some use that as well). Library and tech support is really good in the field. - Mobile developers (Android/iOS) - if you're an iOS developer, well - go for a MacBook with 16GB RAM or more. Most Android devs I know stay away from MacBooks simply because of their price and because it's not really necessary to have one for their work. - Robotics engineers and students favour the higher-spec 13" MacBook Pros when they're not doing on-device CUDA-accelerated development. More portable and generally less expensive. Library support is generally good. However, me and others prefer an *upgradeable* Linux workstation (or a Hackintosh laptop) to a MacBook Pro for work. - ML/AI and Computer Vision engineers tend to stay away from MacBooks if their work and basic testing is mostly done on-device, since they can't utilize Nvidia's CUDA technology, which provides huge speed improvements in many cases (neural network training etc.). However, most companies in this sector make good use of AWS and other cloud infrastructure, so I've seen development work being done on almost any MacBook with 16GB RAM, with development/testing pipelines run in the cloud.
@Donquixote Rosinante you're welcome! :) If you would like to try not to buy a MacBook but keep or emulate the MacOS feel, here're more tips: For Hackintosh alternatives (if you need MacOS or would like to check it out), check out OzTalksHW's video titled 'The $200 Macbook (Pro) Apple Can't Sell You'. If you want the MacBook's great build quality or just the look of MacOS in general, have a look at the Dell Latitude 5XXXX-7XXX line or Lenovo ThinkPad X/T/L/E series, paired with an ElementaryOS (Linux) installation (or go down the Hackintosh road, but with thorough research beforehand).
Luke SAMA(Respectful version of Sir in Japanese Language), I have been watching your videos for a while. And, I will admit you have become an expert in the world for all that is Apple. For me as well. I have enjoyed what you have to say about buying Apple products. It was you, Bryan from Tech Yes City, and that bloke from VTudio that lead me to finally gift myself with an old 2010 Mac Pro last year. I did as you did in your recent video and upgraded the RAM, CPUs, GPU, HDDs, and to SSDs. The machine is a best for 4K workflows and I am blown away that it handles editing for me so smoothly. Thank you for these awesome videos, Luke Miani. Keep the videos coming.
A point that i think is important to mention for those buying used - Apple updated their mac linup today, cutting the new airs price and updating the non touchbar pros with touchbar and touchid and quadcore cpus all for the same $1299 price
My 2017 15 inch pro just went in for the keyboard repair for the 4th time and I think this video has pushed me to buy a old retina until Apple can get their laptops in order.
Just got myself a fully stock upgraded 2013 13” for £500, 512gb SSD, 16gb RAM and an i7 2.8GhZ. Amazing condition with not a single scratch! Happy as hell, thanks for your help Luke!
The best Macbook pro so far is the Macbook pro 2015 is thin, light, fast, has retina display, doesn't heat up, has no keyboard issues and you don't have to carry hundreds of adapters type-c.. Greetings from Mexico!
I wanted a MacBook Pro for a long time. I finally got one almost a year. I use it for reading watching movies and RUclips. its my main entertainment. its a late 2013 13 inch retina MacBook Pro. what shocked me was the fact it still updates. it has been great and it does what I need. I love the keyboard, I can type and I love the feeling of pressing the keys and they're not loud when typing. I would recommend the 13 inch late 2013 MacBook Pro for basic entertainment needs. it would work for high school students as well.
Because of your and Louis recommendation I bought myself a Late 2013 13” Middle Model MacBook Pro with 256GB storage for 500€. I am really loving it! Awesome device! Amazing form factor, super light and great battery life! Feels at least 10 years newer than my old 2011 15” MBP.
Good video Luke, you’re speaking the language I like to hear,, ... 1 in college, 1 entering, and 1 a couple years away. #1 necessary is MacBook family laptop. Very helpful video. Thanks 🙏🏻
Lot of students here are still using those white plastic Macbooks from 2010. Old but with a ssd and some ram it can still fly for something like word and stufff , .
I just picked up a 2013 15" 2.6. Thank you so much for your recommendation, I was using a 2011 MBP 15 and the graphics card finally died. You made my choice easy. Please keep up the good work.
I purchased a mint late 2014 13” MBP with a 256Gb SSD about 6 months ago. It looks brand new, works flawlessly and included MS Office and FileMaker Pro. I use it for business with email, web browsing and documents. I got the 13” because I travel with it. Also use it for fun like watching videos and movies. The display is excellent and the speakers rock. I purchased this on eBay using your suggestions.
Sadly Developers are forgotten, but it's understandable since it's highly depends on what are you developing. Since i'm a Web Dev/DevOps guy here are my thoughts: - If you are only developing webapps (nodejs, php, react, angular, vue) Macbook pro from 2015/2014/2013 13" with 8GB RAM is totally usable, that's what I had. Even for some light Docker/local Kubernetes clusters, totally workable. It's not fast, but does the job. - If you have a really heavy Docker setup, or you are working with it frequently you will need to get at least 16GB of ram to be able to run multiple docker compose's at the same time. That was the only point where I felt 8GB is struggling. Now I have a 15" Macbook pro from 2015 with 16 GB of ram without dedicated GPU. I'm a heavy Docker/k8s user, so it's totally workable for me. 15" macbooks without dedicated GPUs are much cheaper and web dev and Docker stuffs are not GPU heavy, so you won't need a dedicated GPU.
I don't think it was a mistake... I'm just not a big fan of that laptop because of the keyboard. Take the thing to apple if something feels off with it and you can get a free casing, battery, trackpad and keyboard (a big advantage in my opinion).
I just brought late 2013 15 inch macbook pro with 750m. I think it is absolutely the best bang for the buck. I paid 749 via eBay. I think the only problem is it is kinda overheated. I cleaned it with compressed and air and brush and re-applied the paste. It only mid 50 when I just browse the web but the chassis become hot to touch no idea why.
I was heavily considering a ~2013-2015 Macbook Air for graphic design work, so I'm really glad you mentioned that a retina screen is recommended for that type of work. I figured I could get by with a lower quality screen, but I guess it's probably worth the extra money.
Retina MacBooks are fantastic, the new Liquid Retina is pretty awesome too. I think the M1 MacBook Air screen is the sweet spot for quality versus power consumption.
I recommend replacing the battery yourself. iFixit has them for about $100. It takes less than 30 minutes and a bit of elbow grease to replace. Having a new battery in a 2013 MacBook Pro makes a world a difference.
Maxed out 15" mid-2014 with 2.8 GHz i7, 16gb ram, dedicated graphics and a Samsung SSD. The best MacBook you can get. No issues, no overheating. Works like a dream.
Just so you're prepared (and aware of) all the model-specific issues and/or problems with previous-gen MacBooks, you should really check Louis Rossmann's Macbook buyer's guide recommendation list.

Just for everyone to know, i bought a late 2012 MacBook Pro 13” for 300 dollars. I study medicine and I’m working in research projects right now and my MacBook makes me love it. Perfect for students i would say
@@Jean38157 Have you upgraded the ram in it? I chucked an SSD in mine and it is fast if I don't have much open, but if I do then it slows down considerably because of the limited RAM
A friend of mine gets great results on a 2012 15" Unibody MacBook Pro using Pro Tools. For a couple hundred extra, the Late 2013 15" retina MacBook pro serves me very well using Ableton Live. These are both the fully spec'd versions btw
What's your favorite model of MacBook? Something I talked about or one that I didn't mention? Also make sure to head over to www.dashlane.com/miani for 10% off Dashlane Premium! Also, this video was scheduled so I had no idea there would be updates to the MacBook line today: I say in the video that the 2017 Function keys model is still for sale, that changed a few hours before this video went live: The new base MacBook Pro is much better value
Excellent video Luke. I know there are many ways to cut this cookie conundrum but I have always seen this problem in a more systematic way. For example you did not touch on the hard RAM limitations of some models, particularly the classic Airs. Most of them were bought with only 4 Gb of non-upgradeable RAM and that becomes more and more problematic if you run macOS Mavericks or above, even if you just browse the web, watch RUclips and type papers or use apps like OneNote. The other thing I have seen is that in many cases, specially students, it’s advantageous if you can have a desktop, (ideally iMac), to do the heavy work and act as an anchor, and a light runabout laptop to carry around. In case of losing it or breaking it you have a good backstop. When you divide the problem like that, (specially for students), you can get better use out of a $600-1000 budget. I’m rambling too much but I thought it would be nice to add this angle to the discussion....
Last week I bought an used 2017 MacBook Pro from England here to Czech Republic and cost me 943 USD. BTW new cost here 1536 USD and used cost here from 1228 USD. YES very higher than in USA.
Apple Got rid of the 12 inch MacBook They also reduced the price of the MacBook Air 2018 by 100 Dollars They upgraded the 1300 dollar MacBook Pro to have Quad core Processors, although weaker CPU than the 1800 dollar model. It also has the Touch Bar and Touch ID, And Iris Plus Graphics 645. I don’t know about the T2 Chip. And there is more
Have you see the guy that did wrote his own code to fix Macbook 2011 GPU issues. DOSDUDE, if you love the 2011 might be worth looking into what the guy did.
About a year ago, I bought a refurbished 2014 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. While it’s the best portable computer I have ever owned (I’ve been so spoiled by the amazing Retina display that I now want to upgrade the 1050p monitors on my desktop PC to 1440p or greater more than ever), I wish it was a bit more powerful and didn’t overheat so much though.
I still have an old 13’ macbook pro late 2011. Pretty good machine for basic usage. I tried out mojave patcher but machine felt really slow with mojave so stuck with high sierra.
So to paraphrase, estimating numbers unless anyone would like to tighten them up ... minimum baseline, $200-400ish early teens unibody 4 Gb ram/SATA mechanical spinning drive, 13-in screen, Mid level $400-600 step-up is 13” Retina screen (3rd generation MBP), base ram 8 BG, 128 Gb SsD Final Cut Pro X video work, must have 15-inch screen, dual video card $700-$1000 High-end modern $750 and up, 2016-2019 MBP with TouchBar, double that for new gen 15” I see so many options on these used sites, this definitely helps us compare apples and apples. Too bad all listers don’t state model year and specs.
Just bought a 2015 15" dual graphics w/new Retina display, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD on your recommendation. For photo editing, I wanted a bigger, better screen and faster ports than on my ThinkPad 420 (I shoot on XQD cards, so a dongle is inevitable, but USB 2.0 is a bit slow for 46MP RAW files; I'm just getting into video, so no major demands there). I also ordered the iFixit toolkit for this and future projects. Thanks!
I know two people who upgraded and bought new MacBooks in late 2019. I feel really bad for them. Especially the lady who spent $1,000 on a Core i3 base MacBook Air in early 2020 I’m so lucky I waited til 2021. Got the base MacBook Air M1 for $850 at Best Buy. Two years later and I still am impressed. I don’t care no Pro Motion I think this display is miles better than I had.
I would buy a Dell Latitude E5480 or E5490 with dedicated graphics, 930MX or MX130 respectively. The 13" MacBook, T480/T490, or even the E7480/E7490 do not come with dedicated graphics. It's amazing Apple can optimize their OS to the point a 4th generation Intel CPU can run on it.
MBA 11" as a second computer for students is amazing :) Weighs only 1kg and other than the screen, it is arguably better and more convenient than the new 12" Macbooks.
For around 500 usd, I would have to suggest to pay an additional 100~150 to get the surface pro 6 in the upcoming returning-to-school deal combined with student 10% off. Usually the Microsoft would have great deal in August and it would be just a little bit over $600 for the surface pro bundle including a pen and a keyboard. That's way better than an old MacBook. Unless you really need macOS and don't even wanna try the surface pro with almost perfect hackintosh :D
I have a macbook pro touch bar 13" 2016 i5/8gb/512gb and I'm considering upgrading to 2015 15" i7/16gb/512gb because 8gb of ram just isn't enough for me. Or maybe I'm moving to the new MSI Prestige 14 or 15.
I like most of your videos on mbp, and this one is no exception. I don’t mind 2 mid-roll ads, but 4 (2x2) is too much. I know that you are trying to keep the vides just over 10 min, but this video topic need more time especially when discussing specs, it seems a bit rushed for lay people. Thanks for the vid bro, keep them coming.
Would you be able to do a review on what would be best for educators who now have to be on google meet, zoom, etc. all day for work now? I tried a MacBook Air and there was just too much constant loud fan noise (and heat). I cannot stand that at all (spoiled). But then jumped up to the 16”in because... butterfly keyboard = painful typing for me. It was AMAZING, but I know it’s not really necessary for what I do AND the new 13” was released!! Yay!!! So, the question is what specs would be best on a new 13” pro? My biggest pet peeve is any kind of slow down and fan noise. I know I could get the 16” again to play it safe, but if I can save any money, I’d love to hear some advice. I tried googling, but can’t really find much other than minimum tech specs on google meets website. Thanks in advance!
Personally on my non retina Macbook Pro I use a program called "RDM" (Retina Display Menu) which lets you run higher resolutions than typically supported. The image will get worse the higher you go but if you find a sweet spot the image is crisp and (IMO) plenty for a budget 13" Macbook. I have also used this on my Hackintosh to run my 23" 1080p panel at 1440p with no noticeable distortion. Interestingly when I try do the same thing through NVidia Control Panel in Windows 10 the image is nowhere near as clear. Have you come across this program Luke? Would love to see a video on it because I think more mac users should use it, if not to run higher resolutions then to have access to changing resolutions from the menu bar. Greetings from New Zealand, love the channel :D
You really should add the iOS developer category in future videos, since there's a large chunk of people looking for MacBooks specifically for that usage. This being said, for anyone reading this, I got a pretty good deal on a late 2013 15" DG with 16 GB RAM / 500 GB SSD which performs flawlessly even outside of development tasks (e.g. Photoshop, which is one of the reasons why I was looking for a DG).
I need a MacBook Pro to produce music. Mixing, recording with programs and daws of today. I also asked about buying one that you have rebuilt. You never got back to me, must be busy.
Hey luke another great video!! I appreciate your videos a lot they are always entertaining and informative! now I know your busy but im deciding on a newer dell precision with a p2000 and a xeon processor or a 2013 MacBook pro as the price is about the same what do you think?
I bought an used Macbook Pro 2018 I7 with 80 charge cycles and the battery performance was about 5 hours. Is that normal? Apple talks about 10 hours...
Thanks a lot! This helped me to decide I was about to buy a secondhand Macbook and cannot decide which ones ; about to buy macbook Air cheap 200$ but there is better with retina display so my choices in the end will be between last Macbook Air retina OR Macbook pro 13inch retina , cheers!

I got my mid 2012 with 16gb ram and ssd, I’m fine by now
Long live the MD101-MD102 brotherhood
So incredibly helpful for a complete layman like myself. Thank you so much!
Just for everyone to know, i bought a late 2012 MacBook Pro 13” for 300 dollars. I study medicine and I’m working in research projects right now and my MacBook makes me love it. Perfect for students i would say
I have same model but 4GB ram and it is SO SLOW
Joel Hawkins too bad. Mine is just fine
@@Jean38157 Have you upgraded the ram in it? I chucked an SSD in mine and it is fast if I don't have much open, but if I do then it slows down considerably because of the limited RAM
Joel Hawkins mine is just 4gb. I don’t do much heavy work...
@@Jean38157 Maybe I'm just doing something wrong then, or there's an app in the background that hogs all my ram. Might upgrade it to 8GB sometime.
What about music production on a budget used for 400 USD?
Grizza Leng that would be good to know they forgetting us producers :(
A friend of mine gets great results on a 2012 15" Unibody MacBook Pro using Pro Tools. For a couple hundred extra, the Late 2013 15" retina MacBook pro serves me very well using Ableton Live. These are both the fully spec'd versions btw
@@rssbrry I picked up a 2012 machine for £200. I'll have a look for cheap bargains on 2013 machines. Thank you
@@GrimeUK777 Best of luck, I hope it serves you well!
What is the best affordable MacBook pro that I can buy for music production? Like FL Studio, Logic Pro, and Abelton?
what about a 2017 Macbook Air for $500?
Need to know that too, planning to buy one
What you’ve done in he past helped me out big time in 2019....Thanks fo condensing the info
It might be time to buy the "new" 2019 base macbook pro 13 in.
wayyyy better cpu and configuration and a touchbar included at the same price.
Your videos have helped me a lot! I am getting my first MacBook Pro! And I am getting a 2015 13”! I am big on researching before I buy something.
Luke Miani 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch
i picked the macbook 12 up for school and the battery life, display and weight is just a dream. for writing documents really nice!
2015 12 inch MacBook Pro. Looking forward to the 16 inch coming in September.
The mid 2012 retina MacBook Pro is a good shout if you get the higher spec one
Apple Got rid of the 12 inch MacBook
They also reduced the price of the MacBook Air 2018 by 100 Dollars
They upgraded the 1300 dollar MacBook Pro to have Quad core Processors, although weaker CPU than the 1800 dollar model. It also has the Touch Bar and Touch ID, And Iris Plus Graphics 645. I don’t know about the T2 Chip. And there is more
Aaron Barreto T2 has been added
what about if your a music producer
Could you please make a guide for iMacs too?
Funnily enough, Im entering my senior year of HS and just got a used 2013 macbook air. You know your stuff.
5:07 Was that image intentional? Look like an editing error
What about for music home studio? Thanks
*felt
@@vulcanitu2578 Thanks!
SSD/RAM upgraded? I'm considering getting one really cheap!
10:19 that's all I needed to hear lol
So to paraphrase, estimating numbers unless anyone would like to tighten them up ...
minimum baseline, $200-400ish early teens unibody 4 Gb ram/SATA mechanical spinning drive, 13-in screen,
Mid level $400-600 step-up is 13” Retina screen (3rd generation MBP), base ram 8 BG, 128 Gb SsD
Final Cut Pro X video work, must have 15-inch screen, dual video card $700-$1000
High-end modern $750 and up, 2016-2019 MBP with TouchBar, double that for new gen 15”
I see so many options on these used sites, this definitely helps us compare apples and apples. Too bad all listers don’t state model year and specs.
Chances are when they don't list the year and specs they're trying to upsell you on some crap
Thanks!
What of 13” MacBook Pro for video editing? I am more interested in a smaller MacBook
This was very helpful, thank you!
Could we have a similar video for iMacs please?
Hey Luke, thoughts on Apple discontinuing the 12'' Macbook?
I own an old 12" and nobody will repair them now because of the tiny size - they really are a nightmare.
I know two people who upgraded and bought new MacBooks in late 2019.
I feel really bad for them. Especially the lady who spent $1,000 on a Core i3 base MacBook Air in early 2020
I’m so lucky I waited til 2021. Got the base MacBook Air M1 for $850 at Best Buy. Two years later and I still am impressed. I don’t care no Pro Motion I think this display is miles better than I had.
1.5,just perfect.
LUKE. We need an updated used MacBook buying guide for 2023!
Best 13 inch MBP for under $1,600? 2016 or higher, refurbished is fine
I’m an artist but I also do video editing
"go with an iMac for better value" If you're looking for value, Apple is definitely the wrong company to be looking at lol.
What iMac would you recommend for a video editor?
Great content as always man.
Would you consider doing one of these for iMacs as well?
MBA 11" as a second computer for students is amazing :)
Weighs only 1kg and other than the screen, it is arguably better and more convenient than the new 12" Macbooks.
I used a MBA 11" throughout high school and it was perfect. The only downside was the screen.
Unless you really need macOS and don't even wanna try the surface pro with almost perfect hackintosh :D
im planning to buy macbook tomorrow, what’s your recommendation? With low budget pls
2014-2015 are great and still super fast
My 2012 retina with gt650m still edits 4k video really well.
The cat in the backround is probably thinking why does my owner have to be a RUclipsr?¿?¿
Can you give us the exact model number of used MacBook Pro we should try to buy? Thanks love your video
I love the cat just strutting into frame.
2015 15inch MBP vs 2019 13inch MBP would be a very interesting comparison for me ;)
alex emanuelli which 13”?
I have a macbook pro touch bar 13" 2016 i5/8gb/512gb and I'm considering upgrading to 2015 15" i7/16gb/512gb because 8gb of ram just isn't enough for me. Or maybe I'm moving to the new MSI Prestige 14 or 15.
Hi dude I am wondering what’s the brand of you wireless charging panel?
But would you recommend Late 2013 with dedicated graphics over late or early 2015 with dedicated graphics?
I have a late 2014 11” MacBook Air 128gb as a hand me down in my opinion everyone should get a 256gb because for my causal uses 128 is to small
13:29 When you've spent all day YouTubing and you forgot to feed your cat 😂💔
What about for audio production??????????
2015 A1398 with Radeon for under 570$ - do you think it's real till the end of the year?
You really should add the iOS developer category in future videos, since there's a large chunk of people looking for MacBooks specifically for that usage.
This being said, for anyone reading this, I got a pretty good deal on a late 2013 15" DG with 16 GB RAM / 500 GB SSD which performs flawlessly even outside of development tasks (e.g. Photoshop, which is one of the reasons why I was looking for a DG).
シルバクロウ for how much you got that?
The equivalent of 1048 US dollars. I'm in Europe though, so prices will always be higher here, but compared to other offers it was a very good deal.
Should I buy a 2013 15 inch macbook pro, or just save up more money and buy a 2016/2017 15 inch macbook pro, I'm using it for photoshop and garageband
I need a MacBook Pro to produce music. Mixing, recording with programs and daws of today. I also asked about buying one that you have rebuilt. You never got back to me, must be busy.
I like the way your cats just strolls right in and out.
Yeah she knows who the boss is (her)
Hey luke another great video!!
MBP 2007 4 ever😎 snow leopard, Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro all on my system thanks to bootcamp!!!
2015 rMBP, but I'll switch if they make a normal keyboard :)
Is this a good purchase for $450 MacBook Pro late 13’ Retina display 2.8ghz 16gbs of ram and 1tb Ssd?
Andrey Rosinskiy yes
Could you do a video for shop for an iMac each category price ranges too.
Is a mid 2010 MacBook Pro any good?
I have the 2017 MacBook Air and I love it!
André No Last Name the same
Honestly the unibody MBP is really only outdated by the horrific screen.
What about for music production?
Do you think that for App development a 2012 MacBook Pro would be fine?
