I admire them in a weird way because I think this era of the Mac was the wake up call for Apple to abandon Intel since the balance between design and performance was no longer there like it was in the Unibody laptop era. The M1 Macbook Air and Pro are an amazing statement to end that era of design- as those designs used to constrain the usability, but Apple Silicon finally unleashed the performance users always wanted. Plus we still got good stuff out of this era like the amazing trackpad, touch bar if you were into that, and the improvement in USB C connectivity across the board.

Thin usually means it's garbage. There is no way they fit proper cooling or even hardware. And yes, for your 1000+ dollars, you got an i5 6360U, which unsurprisingly gets outperformed by a 2009 Core 2 Quad that's worth less than 10 bucks today, and this will cook itself because of the horrible cooling combined with a stupid fan curve. You get 8GB of DDR3 memory... yes, DDR3... in 2016, and that is soldered! You get that horrible keyboard, which even if it was reliable would still be horrible, and... you get a proprietary SSD, and it's only replaceable on the model without the Touch Bar... on the other one the SSD can't be replaced... and the Touch ID is paired to the logic board, so you can't swap it. I agree 100% with you. My 2011 13" MBP was ok, but I wanted more battery life and also a bigger screen. I feel like a component on the pcb failed causing it to short at random. Which would both explain freeze battery drain and the refusal to boot. Maybe it's even ppbus itself
I was having the same problem with my previous 2017 non Touch Bar MacBook Pro 512GB. I bought it used for $950 and the guy said it is perfectly fine. The random shut down occurred a week after I bought the machine, and it continued randomly for around twice a week. I visited the Apple store for 4 times and the diagnosis turns out to be ok and of course they only offer me the option to replace the logic board. I was so frustrated and turns out sell it for less than half the price. I’ve heard of ppl saying it is a SSD issue tho I can never verify. What I am certain is I will NEVER buy a used MacBook.
I had some weirdness like this on my 2015 MacBook Pro. Apple said it was the battery even though it didn't make sense logically. They replaced the battery and all issues went away. I think it is something about the voltage fluctuations from premature deterioration, not capacity. Give it a try! You can replace the battery. I have faith in you.
I have a 2017 non-touchbar MacBook Pro. It will get very got and the fan will randomly spin up to full speed when doing just simple tasks like internet browsing. Also the screen is starting to discolor a little around the edges and corners. Still use it almost every day tho.
Hi Luke, I had a similar issue with a late 2013 retina MBP which would randomly freeze and then shut down. Sometimes it would turn back on, but mostly not. Turned out to be the AirPort card. I left it out by accident and the laptop worked perfectly (albeit without wi-fi or bluetooth). Bought another on eBay and it was fine.
I have a 2012 13” MBP, pre-Retina with an optical drive. Still getting 5+ hours of battery life, the keyboard is rock solid, I upgraded the RAM myself and swapped the HD for an SSD. Remember the good old days.
Have you tried doing a thorough check of the RAM chips? I've owned a computer in the past that was working but it showed similar problems like the ones you described. It turned out that one of the RAM upgrades had one corrupt chip and after I replaced it, all my problems were solved.
The battery could be the issue for it crashing as I've had a couple macbooks that have done this. This was fixed with a new battery and also with 2016 and 2017 screens, I believe they made the screen cable that's connected to the board slightly too short, subsequently they stretch and break and I've had quite a few macbooks with this issue also.
I still have a 2012 13 inch macbook pro that I upgraded to 8GB of RAM and an SSD. For being a dual core intel-based laptop from a decade ago, the thing is still surprisingly responsive once you get it booting from an SSD. It's a shame Apple lost their way for a period of time, but at least they've finally moved past the age of crappy Macbooks with the M1 series.
This is not a 1M channel yet but as a tech-Apple fan this is one of my favorite channels even compared to those with 1M+ subscribers! Keep the good work
Hey Luke! I own a business here in Pittsburgh called Mount Lebanon Computer and Technology. I fix MacBooks and PCs. I had a similar issue on a MacBook. A customer came to me with a MacBook of the same year that would randomly freeze. I found that re-balling new ram on to the logic board fixed the issue.
Your only hope for this one is to break the butterfly and have to get it repaired so many times that apple might just upgrade you to a newer one w/out a terrible keyboard that also happens to bypass the problems with this model
My Mid 2012 have the same problem as this, It's driving me nuts even I try to run a different OS directly without bootcamp and still random freeze and crash exactly like that, freeze screen and then followed with some kind of glitch and then restart. After trying to find the culprit, I found a forum post about someone PC who have the same issues as my MacBook and he fix it by replacing the Ram module, I decide to buy some DDR3 and I change the Ram with different module and it's running fine for 8 years until it's decide not to turn on anymore on 2020. Maybe the culprit is on the Ram, but as we know, we can't replace or upgrade the Ram on the macbooks since 2013.
Watching this on my perfectly working mid 2014 MacBook Pro. As always, great video, Luke! PS Could you link the music you're using in your videos? Thanks.
try turning off all the power saving feathers for the battery and for the power adapater but before doing that load catalina or big sur on it , keep monterey off of it .. then let us know what happens, it could also be a ram problem when ram goes faulty it causes all kinds of problems and flaky ram can cause some of the problmes you are getting and its true when its running fine at the time of testing it wont show the ram as faulty
I heard something about MacBooks from that age having problems with the ribbon cable that connects the screen. I believe it was too short and breaks after opening and closing it a bunch of times and eventually the backlight becomes weaker
Hi Luke, My 2019 13in MBP has an issue where the right side of the Touch Bar will flash at full brightness pretty commonly. Have you (or anyone else) ever experienced this? wondering if its an easy fix?
With those model, the 2017 touchbar and non touch bar Mac, most of the time that "kind" of isues when it freezes and reboots, not turning on, recognizes then not charging battery, trackpad not cliking and I am sure at 90% it is the ISL9239 on the motherboard. I fixed one Mac with similar issue by changing the ISL9239, it is a BGA chip. It controls pretty much the main power line for the Mac. It could also be a sensor issue, around the ISL9239.
I immediately had to check if this is the 2017 13" macbook pro. It was my first work laptop, and while I didn't have such awful problems with it, its performance was pretty horrid.
I had exactly the same issue with one of my 2015 MBP13. I replaced (not me - in the shop) the main board 3 times. Since the last one it works like a charm. 2.7GHz it was. The most frustrating is that it was ALWAYS ok when I took it to the shop. ;-)
My 2021 14-inch M1 Pro is the worst MBP I've ever owned. The wifi on it constantly drops out and the only way to get it working gain is to restart the machine, I constantly run into errors in Excel that it has run out of memory and I'll often get non-descript errors when trying to open an x86 application.
Sounds just like my iMac. It freezes, it opens random apps. When typing the lag time between striking a character and when it appears on screen can be anywhere from immediate to ten seconds later. When you type at 75 wpm it gets quite frustrating.
You should try sending it to Louis Rossmann, if it is a logic board issue, he has the schematics to diagnose and fix the issue. He could make a video as well, so more publicity for you.
I have MacBook Air 2017 I preferred this model as at that time newer models keyboards were causing issues, mba 2017 is perfect I use it for school work, minecraft, some video editing, for listening songs, for movies
I had a MB Pro 2017 with TouchBar and it was a nightmare. I decided to go for desktop, thus bought a Mac mini M1 with a Studio Display. I’m confident that this setup will be problemless.
I have had an issue with my 2017 MacBook Air where everything freezes and the screen stays on even when the laptop is closed but I replaced the thermal paste and it never had that problem again. (I am in the process of ordering a new 14 inch MacBook Pro)
I still have and love my 2015 13" MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM/256GB SSD/512GB MicroSD Card. It's an i5 and it's not a custom build. I bought it from Apple directly 1 day before they ceased sale of them upon releasing the Touch Bar MacBook Pro. I read some horror stories then and certainly couldn't forego my USB-A ports for 4x USB-C. The Mac to this day works flawlessly, never have any system issues, battery is still awesome. The Mac is running on Catalina. I'm not going any higher. This software version may not be 100% perfect but I don't like the look of Big Sur or Monterey. The best MacOS IMO would be Snow Leopard. As for iPhones. I have pretty much every model from the 3GS and above. I have stopped at iPhone SE 2nd Gen. I am satisfied with it and it's Dual Line capabilities, battery life is good, camera does the job. Not interested in getting a phone that costs the same price as a computer!
Trade it in to Apple!! I got $190 for a 2012 13” and $200 for an original 12” MacBook. I know I could have gotten more on eBay but anyway, the main point is, with it appearing working at first glance, and being in good cosmetic shape, it has a good chance of passing the cursory inspection they do before (probably) shredding it, as Apple loves to do with any device they get back 😂
I have the same problem with my MacBook Air (early 2020). sometimes if I m watching content on Netflix or RUclips and when I close my MacBook to pick a call even for 10 secs, it skips to another video or episode when I open my screen again and sometimes the screen freezes for 5 secs randomly
Thanks for the interesting comment on Apple Silicon Macs used prices in the near future. Even the lowliest M1 MacBook Air will be a great used buy. Suggestion: Can you do a video on used 27" iMacs. Now that Apple has discontinued the 27" iMac, the used values of the more recent models might not drop that much. It's really frustrating because I was waiting for a 27" Apple Silicon iMac but the Mac Studio and Studio display seem to be it...
mine just had the same problem i went back to my 2014 macbook air base model after using a 2016 macbook pro is it just something about the 2016 and 2017 macbook pros
I was think of doing the same thing! I’m buying my first MacBook (Late-2013 13.3” model) until the M1 MacBook prices go down. Can’t wait to experience the connectivity of the Mac with iOS!
Sounds like what I was going through with my iMac late 2014, it turned out to be the ram was bad! I replaced with new ram all 32 at once it is fine . The ram gone wacky and eating power and random crashes, weird reboots, sudden freezing.etc…..
Interesting. I had an iMac Retina 21.5” 2017 with Radeon Pro 560, awesome machine.. but from times to times it just got frozen the same way Luke described. And I was never able to say what kind of tasks I was doing right before the freezes happened, they were random. That scared me.
My 2018 macbook pro was cursed like this, after 3 months of battling with it, I returned it, and used the Australian Consumer Law to get a refund - basically it was not fit for purpose. A laptop should be able to launch zoom and word without bombing out. I kept my store credit (I was happ with that) and got the macbook air m1, what a difference! :)
In the next video Luke finally throws spooky haunted crap computer out of a window only to return to find it has reappeared on his desk now making ominous noises and craving human flesh
I got a Mid 2014 15 Retina with the Intel graphics. It's by far not the fastest computer I've used but with an upgraded SSD and new battery this thing is more then good for everything I use it for. It doesn't even get hot like the dedicated GPU ones do.
I have the 15inch version .. same "orange splotchy LCD" issue. From everything I've researched,.. that orange splotchyness happens when pressure is applied to the screen. Happens to me because I keep it in a Backpack with other things pressing up against it. If I take it out to use it,. after an hour or so the blotchyness goes away as the screen warms up and works great.
Look at it this way, Luke: it gave you nearly fifteen minutes of great comedy material. You had me cracking up. If you ever become tired of being a Mac guru, you could do very well as a stand-up comedian.
I've had pretty much the exact same issues on the 2018 13" MacBook Pro. Crap keyboard, splotchy display, slow performance, insane heat, horrible battery life, random crashes and battery emptying overnight. Thankfully it's a work device, so it's not my money.
I have a couple of older macbook pros... One is still updatable but the other is not... That one only update is to High Sierra I believe... So can I still upgrade and will it be "good " I have another one that is the same year but I can still update to big Sur if need be... I want to upgrade both, but from what I've read I can't upgrade past 8 gigs of ram and not sure if I upgrade the hard drive to ssd if it'll be good... The macbook pro I currently use fir for DJAYING is updated ti Catalina with a 2 hundred and something ssd on the computer, but I also use an external ssd for my music files...
I have a 2016, and I would love to pawn it off on someone but I have had to have the Battery replaced from swelling, the butterfly keyboard replaced as well. The battery lasts 5 hrs and It randomly shuts off once a week. With Covid I never take it anywhere, its docked 99% of the time. If I could sell it for a decent amount for a better machine I would.
Almost went with one of these, after watching this guy I made the best choice in my life and bought a tricked out retina. Waiting for those M1’s to drop in a few years. Until then me and my Retina just chilling.
Based on some repair guys' videos, this could be due to a CPU/SouthBridge/EC failure. The CPU is not totally failing but the working condition is not consistently met. It is worthy to re-install the CPU and see what happened.
NO WAY! This happened to me as well with a 2016 15’ macbook pro. Apple wouldn’t take it until it randomly happened on the store. Then they took it and swapped basically everything inside hoping it would be fixed. I would also describe it as haunted. It still is btw
I recently got rid of my 2017 13” Macbook Pro for the 2015 15” Pro. Such a difference! The 2017 one would sound like a jet engine even from just opening Spotify, the keyboard was an absolute mess with keys sticking down on the daily. Obviously with the 15” now being seven years old, it’s not the fastest thing in the world but man is far, far more reliable than the 2017 one. Hoping to get through university with this one and then maybe I’ll look into getting a Mac with Apple silicon…

I feel like a component on the pcb failed causing it to short at random. Which would both explain freeze battery drain and the refusal to boot. Maybe it's even ppbus itself
Went through film school with this exact configuration lol, first computer I bought myself.
Luke, send the logicboard to Paul Daniels / Louis Rossmann, it would be interesting to see what’s wrong with it!
My MacBook pro 2017 also spin up the fan like hell.
2:59 I GOT AN AD IMMIDIATELY AFTER YOU FINISHED THAT STATEMENT LOLLL
Have you tried doing a thorough check of the RAM chips? I've owned a computer in the past that was working but it showed similar problems like the ones you described. It turned out that one of the RAM upgrades had one corrupt chip and after I replaced it, all my problems were solved.
They're soldered to the Logic Board.
@@alienrefugee51 But they can still be bad. The problems look exactly like bad RAM.
@@alienrefugee51 Because they are soldered on, you can’t replace them
@@dereinegreg yes you can if you have a soldering station
@@alienrefugee51 you can reflow them , usually it will help, no replacement is needed
The 1:12 slick styrofoam thumb garbage off table hide.
NICE. NIIIIICE 🤣
Nice Luke! interesting &entertaining
I have a 2019 16" MacBook Pro with like the SAME EXACT problem... I wonder how that happened.
For curiosity sake I’d love to see you analyzing the mobo with an infrared to see if any chip is heating up when the ghosts decide to appear.
It could be heat sink, thermal paste, a contact with still consume battery or the battery going out and in. I suppose you tested ram with “rember”?
Why there is older version of MacOS installed on that M1 MacBook..?
I had exactly the same issue with one of my 2015 MBP13. I replaced (not me - in the shop) the main board 3 times. Since the last one it works like a charm. 2.7GHz it was.
The most frustrating is that it was ALWAYS ok when I took it to the shop. ;-)
Do the issue happen when it's plugged into the main adapter?
If this was an iPhone I would say it was a dodgy battery.
Thanks for the insight.
You should try sending it to Louis Rossmann, if it is a logic board issue, he has the schematics to diagnose and fix the issue.
He could make a video as well, so more publicity for you.
I was thinking the same.
I also had this issue with the surface series, crashes on the tile menu. Sometimes it makes me enter the recovery key. I gave up on it forever.
Not interested in getting a phone that costs the same price as a computer!
has your macbook gotten any slower over the years? if so is it enough to be an issue?
Trade it in to Apple!! I got $190 for a 2012 13” and $200 for an original 12” MacBook. I know I could have gotten more on eBay but anyway, the main point is, with it appearing working at first glance, and being in good cosmetic shape, it has a good chance of passing the cursory inspection they do before (probably) shredding it, as Apple loves to do with any device they get back 😂
They refurbish them usually or recycle them
When you traded it in? They wouldn’t even give me an offer for my 13” 2012 mbp like a year ago (in the US)
Great advice. Apple will change haunted ssd and resell perfectly fine machine with much profit. They only wait for returns 😂
It's really frustrating because I was waiting for a 27" Apple Silicon iMac but the Mac Studio and Studio display seem to be it...
mine just had the same problem i went back to my 2014 macbook air base model after using a 2016 macbook pro is it just something about the 2016 and 2017 macbook pros
so this doesnt happen on some newer macbooks or? since im planning to get the 13 inch macbook pro M1
I was think of doing the same thing! I’m buying my first MacBook (Late-2013 13.3” model) until the M1 MacBook prices go down. Can’t wait to experience the connectivity of the Mac with iOS!
Dual Core anything from 2009 to 2020 is a bad time.
Ive heard SSD issues and Sensor issues on these macbooks, id recommend looking at those options
I wanna see Louis Rossman fix this if possible 😂
That would be an awesome collab!
Random question: where did you get the light in the background on the right?
In the next video Luke finally throws spooky haunted crap computer out of a window only to return to find it has reappeared on his desk now making ominous noises and craving human flesh
I got a Mid 2014 15 Retina with the Intel graphics. It's by far not the fastest computer I've used but with an upgraded SSD and new battery this thing is more then good for everything I use it for. It doesn't even get hot like the dedicated GPU ones do.
Thanks for this. I have a 2019 with similar issues, and it just bricked itself… again. This video made me laugh, so at least there was that.
I would recommend using a thermal camera to see if there are any overheating components. If there are you could replace them yourself cheap hopfully
I have the 15inch version .. same "orange splotchy LCD" issue. From everything I've researched,.. that orange splotchyness happens when pressure is applied to the screen. Happens to me because I keep it in a Backpack with other things pressing up against it. If I take it out to use it,. after an hour or so the blotchyness goes away as the screen warms up and works great.
one of my fave channels. I'm waiting with baited breath for a purple MacBook Air.
So can I still upgrade and will it be "good "
I have another one that is the same year but I can still update to big Sur if need be...
I want to upgrade both, but from what I've read I can't upgrade past 8 gigs of ram and not sure if I upgrade the hard drive to ssd if it'll be good...
The macbook pro I currently use fir for DJAYING is updated ti Catalina with a 2
hundred and something ssd on the computer, but I also use an external ssd for my music files...
It is so entertaining to watch your frustration 😂
The problem with older M1s is that as components fail as far as I know they cant be replaced.
My MacBook display also has the splotchy issue, like some areas are more blue than others… it’s a 2018 model too
NO WAY! This happened to me as well with a 2016 15’ macbook pro. Apple wouldn’t take it until it randomly happened on the store. Then they took it and swapped basically everything inside hoping it would be fixed. I would also describe it as haunted. It still is btw
I had an identical freezing issue with my '09 MBP until I replaced the HDD cable.
I got the same issue, and the fan was failing. After replacing the cpu fan everything was fine :)
Does it have the same issue when connected to an external display? If you want to ship it to the Uk. I would have just to look at. 😂
I have a 2009 MBP that does the same thing but when i punch the screen it starts working again
I have a 2017 15" macbook that is also haunted. I suspect the SSD is failing. Progress bar on startup hardly moves!
My guess is that this is a result of failed capacitors and possible PMU failure.
I remembered Zone of tech also has haunted MacBook Pro with random crashes that Apple can't detect
