The Mac Pro is actually the most upgradable Mac right now. You can upgrade the ram, hard drive, and the cpu. The only thing you can’t upgrade is the graphics card
currently going on 5 years with my 8 core Mac Pro with 64 GB of RAM. used for music production and occasional gaming. love this rig so much, and my first foray into mac was my MBP from 2009, which I still own.
Couple of things. The D700's together has the same power as a Nvidia Titan. While Priemere Pro does not support it very well, other apps ( Of Course FCPX, Logic Pro ) DaVinci Resolve free version supports it fully and works with its Dual Graphics while free version only supports one Graphic card in other computers. You have to get paid version for dual graphics in other setups.
Hey man, although I own nMP D700 for few years, today for the first time I did GeekBench Benchmark - Metal - and as far as I understand it measures only One D700. So this is the case ? That only one is measured and to somehow asses average score I just theoretically add these scores ? Does it make sense ?
Im a creative, and this Mac Pro works damn good. My buddy let me test drive his and I’m upgrading come tax time. My recommendation, wait til the 2019 Mac Pro drops, then so will the price of the 2013. My old cheese grater is showing it’s age, and it just wasn’t worth throwing money at it anymore. This Mac supports my multi monitor setup, my external hard drive storage, move up the latest OS, supports apps that won’t load on my 2008, an pretty much kills my 2008 performance. And that’s another thing to consider, “where are you coming from, and what are the gains an losses”. All that upgrade ability to talk about, means nothing, because i haven’t taken advantage of it, except ram. I’m never going to stress this machine out, I didn’t do it on my 2008. And that want I want, to never worry about crashing my desktop. Throw 24gigs of ram, an some new cables, I’ll be ready to go. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
@@techno_eclipse totally disagree. If I were to buy this 2013 Mac Pro I better off with the Mac Pro 2010/2012 model with the ability to upgrade to its full potential in fraction of the cost. Top of the line 2013 2.7ghz/12 core Mac Pro BruceX test in final cut pro X done in over 25 seconds. the Mac Pro 2010/2012 3.46/12 core with rx Vega 64 8gb done in 15 seconds. and like I have said, fully spec out in fraction of the cost under 1800$. even the base model 2013 trash can cost more then 1800$. no way more then 1800$!
Hi. I am also in the creative industry. I’m wondering if my primary software tools are mainly graphic design and retouching apps. Cinema 4D and Adobe Animate. Would this machine (refurbished) be a good choice. I really appreciate any opinion. Thanks.
I wish they didn't give up on this design, it might not be great for the pro market but it could fit in-between the Mac mini and the real pro line. I've had it for the last 4 years and its been great.
Beautiful, gorgeous sure... until you connect all your peripherals, the tangle of cords makes it look like a bad Frankenstein experiment, totally eye sore because it is designed to sit directly on your desk. I have one and it looked super pretty until I plugged in 2 monitors, speakers, external hard drive, Wacom tablet, etc. I notice you conveniently don’t show it with anything plugged in to it. Also, thunderbolt 2 is pretty much obsolete, most are now using thunderbolt 3 / USB C which limits what can be plugged in. I’ll admit it is completely quiet, totally silent even when doing major processor intensive tasks and it has never become hot, remains slightly warm after hours of rendering. But mine has the lower specs D300 with 32 Gb RAM and some After Effects renders take 34 hours!! But I agree, super beautiful, compact, sleek until everything is plugged in.
I just bought one in 2023 im not looking at it for gaming i need a production machine and for 400.00 for a used one now on ebay and other tech refurbished sites im ready for one
Knowing that the processor is replacing, that memory does not cost a fortune ... Yeah it's not so bad! I only regret the performance of the video cards. I offered my services for several years to replace the processor of this type of machine.
In 2016, the plan was for me to upgrade my desktop from a 2010 mac mini (the last model with the internal apple DVD super-drive) by getting a used 6-core 2013 mac pro once the price dropped after apple started to sale their promised new mac pro models. Here it is 2019, and apple has upgraded the 4K and 5K imac's with an imac pro option, upgraded the mac mini with the 2018 version and still no new mac pro. Not being a power user one element that, I liked was since the 2013 mac pro uses Thunderbolt 2 ports, I can connect it right up to my current apple 27 inch (none Thunderbolt) cinema display and as you say in your video will be able to take advantage of the lower costs of older Thunderbolt 2 external devises.
I am still using it even in 2020 and totally agree with you. Upgraded the cpu two times, at first from Quad to Six cores and after the announcing of the 2019 Mac Pro last year I put in a Twelve core and also Upgrades the RAM to 64 GB. I also love the design and the fact that it is or was possible to put such hardware in a tiny and damn nice looking case like this. I am planning to upgrade the SSD too with one of those small adapters to use an ordinary nvme SSD like the Evo 960 or something else. Hopefully this will work. It is always a pleasure to open the device and look at its beauty by design. For Apple it might be a fail like the G4 cube was, but like this, it was something different and I wish they would have optimized it. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪👋🏻
I owned one for about 4 days recently - got it Apple refurbed for $1800 (was even able to add apple care). I had to return it though. Coil whine city, it worked way way way too hard decoding HEVC, and was not impressed with the GPU at all. I did kind of like it otherwise. I got a 2018 13” MacBook Pro on sale for the same money instead.
Techno Eclipse yep, it’s meeting my needs. An egpu is a possibility at some point. I also didn’t realize how much i really wanted a laptop until i had one. It’s great to be able to compute with the same machine anywhere. One thing I do love about newer macs though is the need for a good GPU is slightly less with built in HEVC decode. It just didn’t seem right that the Mac Pro struggled to play video my iPhone took.
I wanna get a 12 core 2013 Mac Pro since my 2015 4k Mac isn't cutting it. I don't care about the new quick sync since I've heard it doesn't work with Adobe Premiere
Your Point about “LAYERS” is a great point. I have used a 2010 Mac Pro for a while. And for editing, that machine is better when your projects get larger and larger. My simple editing of RUclips and friend videos doesn’t need such a potent computer. Doesn’t mean, I won’t keep using the Mac Pro though. ;)
I LOVE my 2013 R2D2 Mac Pro. I only got the base model but for music production in Logic (my most demanding usage), it is more than enough. As a "prosumer" I have no problem with the 2013 MP. I knew I would never upgrade it except for the RAM which I updated out of the gate. Would love to see the base 2013 MP vs the 2018 Mac Mini (which I also like). Anyone know of such a comparison?
Hmm as stated upgrade to a D700 maxed out at least 2tb nvme will rock in FCP!! attach the thunderbolts to (2) 4k monitors that support it and hdmi for a 3rd monitor and you are good to go.
QUESTION: Ok, so for about a year I’ve obsessed over whether to get one of these or not. LOVE the design of this Mac Pro. I edit video as a hobby but not professionally, so I at least want dedicated graphics and substantial processing power. I’ve owned some powerful Macs before but my current Mac is just a 2017 13” MB Pro that I got for such a steal that I could sell it for around $1000 and mostly break even. I was going to spend an extra $500 to up specs on a 2018 Mac Mini and buy an eGPU later, but if I can find a 2013 MP for less than $1500 knowing I’ll only be out a few hundred should I do it? I’d plan to keep it around 4-5 years, but I don’t want to be regretting it after 2 years (or sooner). I know I could just keep the MB Pro and buy an eGPU but I’d like the additional processing and ability to upgrade beyond 8GB RAM. I’d appreciate the community’s thoughts!
I use a 2008 Cheezegrater. When this trashcan came out in 2013 I needed to upgrade. But the Trashintosh was just pretty and did not look like a real computer. My cheezegrater was esthetically empty but it worked! As the years pass, my 2008 computer is getting very old. I cannot load the latest MacOS. But this year, Apple will come out with a new Mac Pro that I hope will be nothing more than an upgraded Cheezegrater. If it is another Jony Ivy pretty design, I will go to Windows.
What about people who primarily use Adobe Photoshop for creative retouch and Illustrator, InDesign? I notice that many of these spec and tech videos never mention the print production workflow. Everything is always compared to the video editing pros and sometimes audio pros. I’d like to know if this machine is good for print and digital pros. Any response is totally appreciated. Thanks.
How would you say this rates against the 2019 iMac with 6 cores?? I've been wanting the 2013 Mac Pro for ages but I'm so hesitant to throw down that much cash on a 6 year old machine that may not be supported in a few years time.
I bought one of these when they came out. The performance was so poor, I thought there was something wrong with it. I exchanged it for another, same thing. I wanted it for video editing. I bought a top spec MBP with an Nvidia GPU. It worked much better. Recently I made this my number two machine as I bought a Windows desktop.
The trash can Mac is one of the best computers ever built, but the cheesgrater one can be built to out perform it these days. I’d rather the Mac Pro, Apple Cinema Display and wireless keyboard and a Logitech mouse in my desk...

And it’s user serviceable! But I’d never buy it new! The new Mac Pro will cost a ludicrous price knowing how Apple is now, Cook did charge over 12 grand for an Apple watch...
Great workhorse, use it at work every day... not sure if it will have the same longetivity as the 5,1 and other MP’s that we also still have running (even 2 MP 1,1’s)... but we will see.
