Not easy to conquer entire India as Indian culture is so diverse and it changes every 500 kms. It’s nice that his music appealed to entire India.
Exactly! Since his predecessors like Ilairaja or RD Burman conquered only South and North respectively. It's unique thing about Rahman that he's the first pan Indian music director and also the first global Indian musician who didn't just transcend regional but National boundaries as well!🙏

Rajiv is trying to explain the influences which is nice, but there is a natural genius there that is just a gift.
Learning all these forms music is different and combining their ethos and composing ever lasting tunes are different.

Arr went outside and conquered North and London etc. But Raja went inside and conquered our souls...
To each his own brother! But I adore both Isai Gnani and Isai Puyal for their strong rubber stamps on Indian film music!
Such a insightful interview. Even after so many interviews and articles available about Sir, there is still so much to learn about Sir. Thank you for presenting this gem of an interview to us

When it comes to bgm, there are average music directors, there are great music directors and then there is Ilayaraja, God of BGM. Be it Nayagan, or Mudhal Mariyadhai or Mullum Malarum or Aan Pavam or Onayum Aattukuttiyum or any damn film, BGM is at God's leve...
Great insights from Rajeev 🎉
Thanks sir. Delighted that you liked it... Regards
What Rajeev Menon explained about the difference that Rahman's bgm made i couldn't get it technically but definitely I knew the impact it created in elevating the film's intensity of a scene or sequence!
Another nice episode of Mr Menon's insightful nuanced observations of bgms over the years in Indian cinema. I also was amazed at his explanation about Carnatic elements in Hindustani music and vice versa! Nevertheless, Carnatic or Hindustani or Sufi, Western, Middle East but Rahman's choice of music has always been classi to the core! But the way he mixed n fused it with other elements and those layering of sounds with power packed rhythms is what has really caught the attention of most of our audiences!
Be it North or even West side, Rahman's music stood out because his melody and sound touched many a heart❤ across the world and India too!
Dear Sir Thanks a lot. It's correct hi sstands out. If you check out his latest outing - Chamkila - one requires guts to produce musc that's so true to soil. Regards
It will be great to hear Shankar views

Tipu
Don’t minimize his religion by saying he converted to Sufi Islam.
Sufism is a part of main stream Islam
Do you think mainstream Islam supports music and dance?? Music and dance are essential parts of Sufism.
Im not being Islamophic... He believes what he believes nobody can judge that... But there is a difference in Sufism. Sufism still gets attacked in core Islamic regions.

Hmm, the famous Bombay flute theme isn't exactly from Mars next to the Nothing But Wind theme. And the claim that it was Rahman who came up with themes in the BGM is blatantly false considering Raja used leitmotifs in almost every score of his. I love Rahman's music and always will but Rajiv Menon's revisionism here is really tiresome.
To add, MSV also used Hindustani ragas within Tamil language songs. Raja too did songs with Hindustani treatment of melody like Naan Enbadhu.
Rahman is unique but there is a way to capture that without trying to claim he was the first to do things that others had done before.
I agree with you...True, people has done that earlier... BGM scene has always been great here, IR took it to another level. But, to ARR's credit he made his songs reach north too. Which our earlier musicians failed to do, it is no fault of theirs, the whole nation has woken up to the standards here only in the last couple of decades. Though the musicians in the north stole a lot from IR without crediting him.
@@nagendraprasadr9278 I agree with you except for two things:
1) Even back in the day, Ae Zindagi was not only a big hit but is still regarded a classic and was even remixed (with Arijit's vocals). It's just that far fewer such films were remade or dubbed from Tamil to Hindi and fewer that made an impact.
2) Pan-India as the sole yardstick to judge a composer is a standard imposed by Rahman fans and North Indians. Does anybody think Lalgudi Jayaraman is a lesser musician just because he is not as well known as Zakir Hussain? Obviously not. There is nothing wrong if language barriers limit a composer's reach to the South and is in no way a reflection of their quality. That way, RD Burman was way more popular than someone like Salil da in Tamil Nadu, doesn't make Salil a lesser composer.
But there’s something with ARR music which appeals to larger sections, which may not be understood by common people. IR indeed have Hindi albums but they never could present his musical prowess to North.
@@pradybaby I am not denying that. I am just saying there is a way to say that without making it sound like Rahman was the first competent musician in the industry. When Menon says Rahman was the first to write Western themes for BGM, it's not only a lie but really insulting to Raja.

How dare you can say Raja and all... Show me one person who can match up with Raja when it comes to BGM... Jusr watch Mudhal mariyadhai... Or Mouna ragam or Nayagan... What a blabbering...
7:00 Trying to trivialise Raja sirs theme like he just starts n stops music for an already shot scene is nothing short of stupidity. Shows you haven't even scratched the surface of Ilayaraja's ocean of music. We love AR Rahman. BUT you are trying too hard Mr. Menon. Good luck.
