Ern, you’re worth a lot more than a slew of TV commercials and print ads to Southwest. You embody the soul of a great American airline and are a tremendously valuable resource to Southwest. I know they must be thrilled to have you as a spokesman and Captain.
Giving them all Kinds of free pub in hopes of getting in good with the higher ups. He’s a straight shooter with middle management written all over him.
After I see the incredible amount of training required to be a commercial airline pilot through your vlog, it just drives me crazy when politicians say all the airlines need to do to fix the pilot shortage is hire more pilots, like any Joe off the street can do it. It take a special person with dedication to their profession to be airline pilots. Thanks Captain!
You really have to love flying to deal with all the micromanagement involved in this profession. You are one hundred percent correct about that dedication to being a professional pilot though. The sad part is it's a job and like any other job people get burned out and lazy, that's what has to be dealt with in a profession where many lives depend on you being your best physically and mentally at all times.People handle the stress differently and are quite happy in this position, they are the lucky ones! I think this Captain is top notch and professional all the way around!
Hey Ernie! Thanks for giving us a tour of the LEAD Center. This building is just amazing. A great reminder of the incredible legacy spearheaded by Herb Kelleher.
One thing I have noticed in this gentleman's videos, have you ever had a single negative vibe being given off? That's a surefire clue on how to move forward in a career and life in general. Pay attention. There is more to learn than just aviation folks. You reap what you sow. You'll always get back more than you put out, whether it is good or bad.
Congratulations on the promotion. I totally loved this vlog very informative. As a future pilot it had me excited to see what you were going to be showing next. My sister in law is currently in flight attendant class in Dallas, and I am excited to hear her stories. Thanks again for such a great vlog. Can’t wait for the day I get to be at Southwest or another airline learning. Congrats and keep giving us the great content.
Congratulations on your promotion... You are a tremendous spokesperson for your airline... Southwest , is blessed to have you representing its great service and outstanding employees..
Congrats again on the upgrade! Seeing the inside of the buildings is always cool to see. Some take it for granted, I still get all the goosebumps when I go into the flight academy on the other side of Dallas 😉. Fly safe and keep up the great content!
WOW! Thank you so much for taking the time and showing us the awesome facility you have to train in! Quality of content has been absolutely amazing and thank you for continuously keeping the fire alive to get to the position you're in!
Hey Ern, I recently got hired by Spirit (soon to be jetBlue?) and am starting training next week. Really excited to be moving up! Your videos are a great inspiration for so many of us behind you - thank you for the awesome content.
I laughed so hard at "Don't see who can get the most air going down the slide". Then I remember "Some guys get carried away" when talking about the combat simulator. The last thought is that oh yeah, this is all pilots we're talking about here. Pilots will literally come up with something new you didn't even think was possible to get hurt doing.
I have been looking forward to this video and you did an outstanding job with your overview of the training facility and what new hires can expect. I am not a pilot but I am an aviation enthusiast with a lot of time on flight sim. I am also a retired adult education specialist in curriculum development and instructor training. Everything you have shared here is spot on, in regard to great tips to be successful student. From choosing a good hotel room to the need for exercise and above all the necessary bonding with your classmates. Thank you for the tour of the excellent training facility. Brought some great memories back as I had the opportunity to "fly" TWA's 747 simulator at JFK back in the early 80's (a friend of mine was a flight engineer on a 747 and got me in after his annual training one afternoon.) Amazing experience that I'll never forget. Anyway, awesome job Captain!!
You are the epitome of what Southwest stands for Big Ern! Love this video. It was great to see the behind the scenes of what pilots and flight attendants go through. Love seeing you advance to captain. Looking forward to flying SWA next Saturday, BWI-BNA-SAN!! ❤️
You seem like a very busy man, take care of your health thank you for these great videos i never knew, I’ve never seen it before i like it, thank you very much..may God bless you and all your families ✝️😇✝️
This is what I got in my garage Ern! Not motion simulated but a 737 SIM powered by Prosim & MSFS20. Started out with just a small little desktop and Xplane 11 a few years ago to what I got now!
Amazing how things have changed over the years. When I came to SWA we trained in the 1986 Maintenance building it had two 300 sims, and 200 non motion sim that was built from salvaged parts. You have a great place to train, and they have made great advances towards quality training. Back in the day it was said, we don't do training, we do checks. It was fast and furious back then. Kind of a mirror image of a ten minute Quick Turn. You were expected to know the 737 inside and out before attending initial training. The class sizes were very small. Best of luck on the upgrade, and thanks for the tour.
Big Ern, I have watched your videos for a couple of years or more now, sharing your career with Southwest. I'm happy to see you transition to Captain and the left side seat. Keep posting brother!
Hey Ern, very nice video!! I grew up in Irving and in the mid 90's was working in Dallas. We had to go out to Love to do some work and while there this guy walked up to us and started a conversation. He was wearing jeans and a polo untucked. He was very nice and seemed genuinely interested in what we were doing. After he walked off one of the other employees came up and told that was the Southwest CEO Herb Kellaher. Another time after going into the AF I was arriving back at Love and he was greeting people getting off the plane. I have a friend who is a pilot for SW and he raved about how good Southwest is with it's employees.
Captain BigErn, this has to be one of your "signature, top tier videos". Absolutely tops. One thing that really jumped out was one little tidbit that jumped out to me at the 2:00 minute mark. I spotted your FOUR CAPTAIN BARS on your hotel room desk, DAMN - how cool was THAT, CONGRATS, BIG GUY !!!!! Fly safe / CAVU always . If it ain't SWA, I ain't flying.
Fantastic ! I'm very impressed with that setup.. Thank you for such an informative and enjoyable video Captain. Enjoy your ime there and I think you will become an excellent Pilot to fly with.. Well, you already are.. Good luck Captain
Wow ERN that was fantastic thank you so much it must be dream come true making it to this exciting time of training ,I'm 65 and you inspire me to wish I could have signed up you would make a fantastic trainer one day when you finish flying you just come across so excited about being a pilot ,still think you guys and girls are little bit smarter than the average person I find it all interesting but also way above my ability but do still enjoy your video,s I can dream .Thank you Kym Adelaide
There are a lot of old guys like me who aren't much good for anything beyond a trip around the pattern in a J-3. When I see today's technology even just for training let alone flying I know my brain is definitely not cut-out for modern commercial aviation LOL. But it sure is exciting and great fun to follow Captain Ern's flying and career. Thanks Ern. If you ever fly-in from PHX or wherever for the DEN-BOS or BOS-DEN gigs I hope to see you.
G,day Big Ern from Sydney Australia. That was a fantastic virtual tour through the South west airline training facility. I have seen many institutions; medical, military, university, and technology. My basic adult education or workplace assessment and training knowledge, has really enlightened my exploring how the built environment, with resources, supports the learner in meeting the competency of a training program. It can be very expensive for the student and also for the training organisation: government or private sector. Now I think about the financial position. So much demand, generates high course fees. But with internet and external stakeholders such as industry base mentoring, skills and experience can be gained while being productive in the workplace, and "at the end of the day" improves quality of life and empowers people with knowledge. 🖥️📚📝
Awesome video. Impressive facility to say the least. Equally impressive is what the company invests in its people. SWA Culture is unlike any other airline…and it shows.
I really enjoyed this video. I have been waiting for some updates on your upgrade to capt. Makes me more sad because I could not be a pilot, but I will soon start a new job with a Regional in a week. I will be working Aircraft maintenance for 6 moths and then I will move over to being in Maintenance Control. I am so excited about this job. I need to work hard. I am not a spring chicken anymore.
So glad you're finally on your upgrade training. Hope you get a chance to swing in and show us your Ops Center too! At my (now former) airline all upgrade captain trainees came and sat with us in dispatch and the rest of the OCC.
Thank you for sharing the pilot training facility. Again, congrats on becoming the "Captain" you deserve to be. Now, later after getting your fourth bar, you will have to see how your new bidding work schedules will be. Finally, thank for show some of the Flight Attendant Training areas there. That was really a nice gesture.
I have always wondered if someone who flies simulators can get a job being a pilot. All I fly is SWA 737 granted the older ones but its fun, I am actually a retiree of SWA, used to be ramp and provo and miss it a great deal. Thank you for all you show us and our new building.
This video was the best yet! I can relate a little as I was privileged to fly a T38 sim when my daughter graduated USAF UPT (#1, BTW) in March. Keep up the great content!
Ern, you’re worth a lot more than a slew of TV commercials and print ads to Southwest. You embody the soul of a great American airline and are a tremendously valuable resource to Southwest. I know they must be thrilled to have you as a spokesman and Captain.
Ern is worth it and has earned ANY and all fruits that emerge from life’s tree. Spokesman.. Captain.. whatever.. take it all.
Yes- I genuinely believe this too. Never considered flying southwest before I discovered Ern!!
Giving them all Kinds of free pub in hopes of getting in good with the higher ups. He’s a straight shooter with middle management written all over him.
True
Your positivity smile and love for SWA is so infectious. No doubt you earned Captain. Congrats sir. Thank you for sharing.
Good luck on getting your 4th strip. My father was a DC-10 Captain for United. God rest his soul 🙏
Wonder if he met Haynes and Finch. They did an amazing job getting that plane to Sioux.
Ern is a fantastic ambassador for Southwest. So happy that he got his left seat. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to make these videos.
I was rejected in April, hope to see you guys again April 2023!
Wow. Incredible what Southwest puts into their operations and people. Its why I keep flying with them. Thanks Ern
Thank you so much Captain for taking the time to show us around! Southwest is such a beautiful airline 💙❤️💛

I am a non pilot but I love the videos. As a nervous flyer they put me at ease
I'm not a pilot but this is interesting as a frequent SWA passenger. A very impressive facility. Thank you.

Ern, THANK YOU for YOUR service within the military
Congrats on Captain training! And thanks for the detailed tour! Hope to be there in a couple years when I hit my 20 in AF.
Beat of luck. I am a 737 first officer in Africa and your videos give me an idea of what flying is like in the US

LOL Good practice!
Again this brings back great memories from when I trained in Miami in the 90’s. Thank you for sharing this. Congratulations and best regards.

In '86 I believe all the new hires at SWA had to have a 737 type rating so you were way ahead of the game on the first day.
Outstanding! Great information!
Thank you for sharing this! Very interesting. Congratulations Captain Big Ern.
Congratulations!! And thanks for sharing with us here and instagram!

Yessss another video, I’ve been missing your videos

Fantastic video! For non-pilots, this video demonstrates the amount of training needed to operate an airplane.
Thanks for sharing Big E!! Appreciate all your insight and tips.
A class act Ern. Southwest has to be proud to have you on their team. 👍
The wings building had thee best food out of all the three buildings. HQ building had the best view of love field. Congratulations bro
