Singers With the Widest Vocal Ranges (5+ Octaves!)

  • I saw Matthew Dockray's video on bass singers' vocal ranges and thought I should do one of my own but with singers of any voice type (and any with over 5 octaves).
    I tried to include only notes that I thought were countable, but what is considered “countable” is debatable. Feel free to ask any questions about why I did/didn’t include a particular note.

    One of my biggest influences is Mike Patton from a variety of bands and musical projects such as Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Dead Cross and others. He is said to have a 6-octave vocal range which he is said to have the widest vocal range of most well-known singers in America. His complete range is said to be a D1 - F#7 (6 octaves, 4 seminotes)

    Most of these people were just sitting in their homes singing probably just for fun, while Dimash, Mariah and others are actually performing live and they are not just singing, they're moving, dancing, they should stay focused not only on their vocals, but on their stage presence as well. I wouldn't even call most of the people in the video "singers" because what are they even singing? Just hitting the notes isn't singing. No melody, no performance, no feels, no words, not even a song, just notes. And woah - instantly record. I would not be surprised If Dimash's vocal range is actually wider, but he hasn't shown it yet, we'll see in the future. But what I'm trying to say is when you are on stage you are being nervous, you should be concentrated on what you're doing, It's not the same as staying in home hitting ultra notes. No hate towards the creator of the video, you did a good job, I just wanted to point out some differences

    This kind of thing is so subjective! I have "hit" a B-3 (around 4 hz) in pure fry, but I only include my lowest first subharmonic (C1) in my real vocal range. Also, I've squeaked up to an A7 but only count my falsetto/whistle register F#6 in my range. My point is that I could say I have 10 octaves or only 5.5, it's really kind of subjective.

    Hey Matteo,
    A little bit ago I posted a bunch of videos of me chesting some super low notes while I was sick, down to ~C#1, but I have come to announce that I have broken my chest record again this morning. I don't have a recording of it, but I hit an Ab0 with zero fry whatsoever. I'm not sure which demon possessed me to do such a thing. What's even stranger is that I can't even use subharmonics to get below that, modal or otherwise.
    So I guess my "official" range is Ab0 to F5.

    First of all, some of the singers you listed really surprised me as I didn't know they had that range such as: Kayamar, Casper Fox, Marwan Ayman, Peter Barber, David Kahn, Joy Chapman, Ciaran Jordan, Casey Moo, Alexander Rts , Adam Kraft, Krispy DeRato whom I already knew but hadn't heard her reach that G#0 😱, yours is a very good range by the way 😯
    Others are correct like: Piet Arion and Adam Lopez who by the way has a Guinness record that supports it.
    But others are wrong such as: Geoff Castelucci whose highest grade is correct is A5 but her lowest grade is a C#0, Mariah Carey her lowest grade is G#2 and her highest G#7 and I'm not saying it, I'm saying its Guinness record that it holds, Georgia Brown goes from G2 to G10 and neither am I saying it, but rather its Guinness record that it still has an entire range of 8 octaves, Tomi Pizur from F0 (correct) but it goes as far as the G#6, Dimash, one of the ones you have made the worst mistake with, goes from G0 to D8 exceeding 7 Octaves, Nicola Sedda from C1 to A9 exceeds 8 Octaves...

    • @BassManMatteo
      @BassManMatteo  Год назад +3

      Thank you! All the ranges that you have listed as higher I didn’t include because of either
      1) No proof of them hitting the note (Georgia Brown)
      2) Note might not be real, could be pitch shifted (Nicola Sedda)
      3) Note is of poor quality or non-musical (the rest you mentioned)
      A lot of notes in category 3 are debatable, and could be either included or not included, depending on how strict of a definition of “vocal range” you want. This was just based on my opinion of what should count, there are various opinions.

      @@BassManMatteo 1) There are no records of the G10 from Georgia because the G10 is a note that exceeds the human hearing range, however this note is certified by the Guinness World Records...
      2) Nicola Sedda with telling you that he even has a concion with a frequency of the human voice, that is to say his voice... that reaches up to an F10 the curious thing is that the spectrometer detects the frequency when only absolute silence is heard this because the same as the F10 It already escapes the human hearing range, I was even reading comments on that video and one of Sedda's close friends commented that it is capable of reaching the eighth 11th, I comment all this because I really don't know if it's true or not, but in his song The call, emits the following notes: Bb8, D9 and A9 which if you can appreciate, in the video the making of nicotomia (which is where you got the fragment you used in your video) at minute 3.2 emits a C1 ...
      3) In the same way, what you say about some notes not being musical is correct but at the same time incorrect, let me explain😅: You say that you did not include the notes of some because they are not musical (although you put many examples like that) however The vocal range should not necessarily be sung, it is only about frequencies, the note that the person is capable of emitting from its lowest frequency to the highest frequency, this is how the vocal range works...
      But in truth I say all this to share what I know and I know my job is not to fight or do that kind of thing the truth is that I admire your work and what you do and thanks to you I have known incredible basses that I had never heard before so I thank you very much...

    There is a diffrence between lowest and highest possible note, and notes that are controlled and tonally plesent enough to be used in a musical comtext.
    Not all the people on this video, but a couple.
    Just cause they can hit the note dosent mean it sounds good.

      the low vocal fry is definitely not part of a true range if they cannot sing in it with volume. watching them mashed up against the microphone making grudge girl noises in a low tone isn't true range. so i agree

      I don’t think they are. I’ve heard a lot of them hit the notes live with a cell phone camera and no vocal effects. There are vocal effects and slight tuning being used, but nothing that changes a note by a full semitone or more. It’s mostly changing things by a few cents to make it more in tune.

    • @harrisonreed8718
      @harrisonreed8718 9 месяцев назад

      @@BassManMatteo Of course, it is difficult to tell for sure for any audio released after 2000 or so. I just finished the video -- one guy towards the middle is even using Melodyne to analyze the recording he did. It is possible these are all real, but tough to be certain. On at least one of the clips you can hear the crappy auto tune used as his voice slurs down, because they had the program locked into a scale (which, yes, could have just been for intonation)
      FWIW, Melodyne can convincingly shift pitch considerably, more than one octave, and if using the formant feature correctly you can "tune" the result to sound very natural. You don't have to reduce the vibrato or pitch inaccuracies when you do this either, so it sounds exactly as sung, just shifted. But just because it's possible doesn't mean it was used, like you say.

Sliding down a scale to fry out isn't where you can push out those notes. Dimash, geoff, Tim and some others are consistent and can do it most of the time. @@jukeboxknocks If that's your definition of what vocal range is, Dimash has a range of about F2 to D8. A very impressive range, but not this apparent holy grail of 7 octaves. Many people hail him as some sort of singing god and have told me and fought tooth and nail, thrown insults and belittlement at me to try convince me he's the greatest singer of all time when he really isn't. He sings in the vocal style of showing off which is what kind of ruins him as a singer for me.
