- Magnesium is considered one of the essential minerals that is involved in more than 300 different body processes, including keeping your heart beating and maintaining electrical stability of your nervous system. magnesium made me worse. I became lethargic and super depressed and felt too full all the time. I get a lot of magnesium from my diet, but I took it just in case I wasn't absorbing it. I wouldn't have expected it to make me feel worse so that sucks. I tend to have unusual responses to supplements. (like Vitamin D induces hypomania for me even when my levels were on the low end).

Right to the point. I like it.
For treating mental conditions (especially ADHD) you really want to go for *Magnesium L-threonate* form: the only form that can penetrate BBB and increase brain magnesium levels directly.
I read in a reputable medical source that Magnesium can also be helpful as a SLEEPING AID, and that when used for this purpose the best form of magnesium to take is Magnesium Glycinate.
Also, I have read elsewhere that Magnesium can help in calming the Central Nervous System, which supports the statements made by Dr. Marks regarding the relationship between magnesium and Anxiety & Depression.
As always, consult with your doctor.

Seriously everyone listen to her! I used to get severe anxiety attacks literally for no reason. I told the doctors and told them it wasn’t mental and my body was literally just having a panic attack when I wasn’t even stressed out if that makes sense. I started taking magnesium glycinate everyday and they went away in a week! 4 years still going strong.
glycinate is very calming for the body and very good for sleep
Veronica, so grateful you shared your experience with panic attacks. I needed to here that so much! I haven't tried adding magnesium yet but I'm likely deficient as my diet isn't terribly good. But my body has been acting as though I was having a panic attack even though I'm not mentally panicked. When I explained my elevated heart rate and sometimes spiking blood pressure to friends and even the doctor they said "that sounds like a panic attack" which I thought was a ridiculous notion. I rarely panic about much of anything. So you're commit here definitely made me reconsider that possibility. I guess I didn't realize exactly what a panic attack was. I'm definitely going try increasing my magnesium and also be a little more open minded about this panic attack stuff. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
This right here!! This was me after a car accident. I NEVER had panic attacks or severe cognitive anxiety prior to it. The day after, I was balling my eyes out and literally laughing at the same time because I’m like mentally I’m perfectly fine but my body, as you said, was having an attack. Such a weird experience! I’d be totally fine, then out of nowhere my heart would race, I’d feel dizzy, hot, trembly, stomach in knots with absolutely no stimulus. I could be watching TV and then bam, panic attack. After weeks of dealing with that, I started taking magnesium supplements and it’s helped so much! Never had a panic attack since then either and this was also 4 years ago lol

Can you tell me what brand and how much? I am having trouble finding magnesium glycinate.
I cried the day a doctor told me that certain vitamins play directly into mental health. They started me on magnesium, vitamin D and B vitamins. And how are y? Did it function?
Yeah same here! I mean I knew that I have to have vitamins to be healthy but I guess I just didn't realize how depleted my body was. Crazy!

I’ve found that exercise is so important for improving my depression/anxiety. Other smaller changes I’ve made are things like limiting social media or time on any kind of electronics. Please spend your time reading actual studies instead. There is 0 RCTs on magnesium for depression. This whole video is BS.
@@Benjamin-xv9le I've been working in NHS mental health services for about 30 years and I don't agree with your cynicism. RCTs are useful but there are a lot of politics involved- usually they are funded by organisations that seek a profit and unfortunately advising people how to eat healthily doesn't make a large profit in the way that antidepressants do. Consequently RCTs are often not carried out in this area. That doesn't mean attention to nutrition is misplaced. Dr Marks' video gave a concise and crystal-clear account of the science. It makes good sense for people to get their magnesium levels tested and to experiment with , say , supplementing with pumpkin seeds for a little while, and see whether that alleviates depression. Antidepressants do help quite a lot of people but they aren't the only way and learning about one's own nutritional needs can be an important part of the recovery process, which mainstream mental health professionals need to learn more about.
Definetly an eye opener because I’ve been diagnosed with depression at gr.4 and we grew up poor so we never had a lot of the basic fruits, veggies… when we did- it was when parents where in a good mood the whole week.
We just survived off of my moms job when she would bring home with free left over fried chicken every night from work and when I was hungry my dad would tell me to wait till mom gets home ( she would get home sometimes midnight) btw we would eat fried chicken every single day sometimes for breakfast dinner and lunch.
So knowing this I can see how my poor nutrition growing up contributed to my mental health.
Side note; even tho unhealthy, im greatful bc it saved me from a lot of hungry days. It wasn’t until I got my own job at 18 that I started buying healthier food and fruits/veggies

Another bonus of taking magnesium at night is it's affect on eliminating the bowels. I know, "yuck", but it's an essential part of good health. Like Dr. Tracey says, best to combine with calcium for balance.
Especially helps if one drinks coffee in the morning, it helps clean one out in the morning, and create a healthy routine to avoid constipation.
Why space those two out?
Thank you. I really needed this info.
If you are deficient, which many people with ADHD or eating disorders are, it actually can have the opposite effect for a week or so. It gave me insomnia so I took it in the middle of the day for a week and now I take it at night.
Magnesium glycinate has turned my anxiety and depression down a good 90 percent!! Wish I would have found it years ago. I had no idea and evidently neither did numerous doctors and therapist's I've seen in my 58 years.

No FREAKING way. I was actually researching about this literally a couple days ago and decided there's no harm at all in taking a vitamin if it was going to help my anxiety (which mostly comes in the form of a high pulse). I actually started taking it 2 days ago and I don't know if it can have an effect almost immediately but I've been noticing that I'm not as anxious. I'm so happy about seeing this video.

Sometimes watching these videos really makes me wonder if the universe brought this wonderful woman to me. Thank you so muchz
Thanks! Yes, I was told to take this by a nurse who's a depression/anxiety specialist. She said to take it before sleep. And boy, I tell ya, after it builds up it really does help. And I sleep more solidly too because it makes me sleepy. She also said in the morning, take D and B (but not at night). So I do and can really tell if I miss any of these.
Could you please share which brand of vitamin d and mg are you taking?!
Greatly appreciated 🙏
Not sure how much magnesium helped me but my panic and anxiety symptomps were very strongly reduced after taking ~800mg magnesium per day. Bisglycinate is also said to be excellent. I was taking a mix of oxide/lactate and bisglycinate. After about 1 month there was great progress, after 2 months symptoms were almost gone. This is after 6 months of suffering from anxiety and panic. The improvements lined up so well with magnesium that I'm convinced it helped. Maybe it's just placebo effect but sure as hell if placebo effect is actually useful in some health area it's psychology.
Isn't 800mg very high. 350 to 400 is the normal amount per day
I have low iron and low Vitamin D and am taking supplements I know it’s also responsible for my low energy and depression symptoms. I’m going to give Magnesium a try as well.
Just a heads up if you are deficient it can wake you up and cause insomnia if taken too late at night. I recommend taking it earlier in the afternoon/evening for the first week and then taking it at night.
Have your b12 and potassium checked too. I was low on those and I felt like I was having a nervous breakdown
@@myadorablefosters Exactly. I was vegan for years when I was younger & eventually was so sick that I was getting B-12 injections. The liver can store B-12 for several years but it eventually runs out, & many people lack intrinsic factor (something that's necessary to process the vitamin in your body) or just absorb it poorly, so we can get a deficiency, which is called pernicious anemia. I bet that's what the OP has as well
@@scarlet8078 yep I'm vegetarian for years now and I'm getting the shots and taking over the counter b12 too. Feels awful lol
Hmm good to know that Magnesium levels gets depleeted by Anxiety that I did not know, only that it was helping get out of depression a bit👍
Yes, really interesting how the loop feeds itself with anxiety and low magnesium
I just started a psych masters program and read this week that having anxiety with depression means the depression is likely to be more long-term (than depression without anxiety) and now this explains why! Great timing.
I just tried to start taking magnesium because this reminded me of a few years ago when I was in the hospital for awhile and they found I had extremely low levels of magnesium. I started feeling better than I'd felt in decades and I thought it was because of the medicine to help the health issues that brought me there, but as time went on and I spent months and then years on that medication, I found myself right back where I was before mentally/physically/emotionally. Eight years later, I found this and thought that maybe the thing that made the real difference was the magnesium. My medication made it possible to live a normal life from a physical standpoint, but after just awhile of magnesium suddenly I feel like this buzzing unease that I could feel in my chest every second of every day is just not here anymore. I'm still needing to work on healthier sleeping habits, since I'm still up 5 hours before work, but it's going into Monday and I don't even feel a little stressed out about it. I spent the last 5 years being unable to focus on anything for all of Sunday because I needed to work the next morning, and I was certain in my mind that meant that I was going to fail the next morning. No matter how many times I succeeded, it was always going to be bad tomorrow. Now I can see what complete nonsense that was to the point I can't understand how I could think this way not just those 5 years, but for decades of my life. Something flipped a switch when I was a teenager and turned me into someone else, and I'm starting to feel like I'm finding that person I was before. I know this isn't everything and I need to go see someone, but I'd tried for nearly 15 years and I couldn't make myself do it and now I think that I can.
WOW , YOU should think about writing a book, you've got a lot to share
🤡
Wait so taking magnesium does help?
Yes it’s true! I take 1000mg of magnesium a day and it has decreased my anxiety and signs of depression by ALOT 🥰
You’re taking too much according to her! 310-320mg!
Ooof thanks girl!! Let me tone that down ASAP 🤣😂🙌🏽
@@Godleadsministry hi please what type of magnesium are you taking?
@@Godleadsministry does it make you feel more motivated?
I thought she said to take 1000 or more a day? 🤔
I'm lucky I eat a lot of legumes and enjoy it so I get easily 3 to 4 times the daily value for magnesium without thinking, which is one less thing to worry about phew. If you struggle with anxiety as Dr Marks has described, consider tweaking your diet to include at least one meal of legumes a day, it could be peas, beans, lentils, tofu even peanuts, peanuts are both a legume and a nut.
They are also high in fibre which helps a lot with gut health.
Unsweetened cocoa powder and molasses are also very high in magnesium. A cup of cocoa with 1tbsp of each could be up to 100mg of magnesium I think. I often use cocoa in my coffee instead of milk because I like the taste of cocoa and coffee combined.
Stay healthy everyone.

I used to run quite a bit and found that the pain in my legs afterwards was pretty bad. I'd expect a little pain, but it was quite bad. It got that bad that I had to stop running.
After reading your comment I'm wondering if I myself had low magnesium as not only have I had pain in my legs but I'm lethargic and sometimea depressed.
@@simonrodgers2375 you might be. To be more specific, I had Charlie horses at night so I was magnesium/B12 deficient. Maybe try taking b12 gummies and apply magnesium oil topically and see how that works! I’m glad my comment helped I hope you try it out ☺️
