How To Deal With Health Anxiety and Hypochondria

  • This video is long, but it’s packed full of information. Here is a breakdown. I answer the following questions:
What does hypochondria/health anxiety look like?
What’s the difference between hypochondria and generalized anxiety disorder?
    How do you get hypochondria?
Why don’t pills work for hypochondria?
What does CBT for hypochondria-health anxiety look like?
What is a self-help version of CBT for hypochondria?
With hypochondriasis, you misinterpret body sensations and assume you have a serious disease, even after you’ve been told you don’t. You may believe that the doctor missed something. You may even believe the anxiety you have will turn into something more serious like dying in your sleep or having a heart attack.
In 2013, the new edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual 5th edition changed the name from hypochondriasis to somatic symptom disorder. Somatic means body. Therefore, it’s a disorder of being over focused on body symptoms and having an illness. People who have this problem, know they have it because they are in a lot of distress.
Self-talk script to use when you are triggered by a body sensation.
I have been checked out by my doctor, my new body symptoms does not mean I really have a medical illness. I have anxiety and this is what I tend to think,. Anxiety makes me believe I have something I don’t. I am not more of a medical expert than the people who have seen and examined lots of sick people. I don’t know what sick people look like, I only know what I look like. I don’t have a point of comparison to know what the illness I’m concerned about really looks like. The internet will not give me a complete picture of what it really looks like to have [fill in the blank with the illness you’re worried about.

Yeah, don't do it! I've been there googling all the time, frantically, like a maniac. It gives you no answers and induces even more anxiety, it's a vicious cycle that's so hard to break away from. Everyone is different, every disease has multiple symptoms in multiple people, chances are close to zero you'll self-diagnose over the internet. Go see your doctor if in doubt, and remember be honest and don't be shy asking questions.

    • @SatumainenOlento
      @SatumainenOlento 2 года назад +11

Well, I had this happen. I ignored my symptoms as my doctor said that they were only anxiety for 2 years. And even now I have problems of gaslighting myself to believe that symptoms are only anxiety. Unfortunately they are not. And because of past anxiety/hypochondriac label I am not heard by the doctor. Yet.
So perhaps, write down your symptoms and then forget all about it! Come back to it a month later and see if you still have it and if it is affecting your life in any way. And keep doing this to all of your symptoms. If nothing else, you have then been tracking your symptoms for some time and have better picture if they are something to be concerned about.
And it is kind of similar thing than writing a shopping list etc. When you write it down, you won't forget it and do not need to keep thinking about it constantly.
And real symptoms...you are hard pressed to ignore them anyway. Those symptoms make themselves known!

Vega Vein I’m only 19 and my dad told me my family has a history of prostate cancer. That same day I got worried about it looked up symptoms and my body started performing the very same symptoms like struggling to pee or peeing in bursts. I’ve never had symptoms that are frequent enough to call it a problem but my mind likes to think up all the times I’ve gotten up to pee at night and all the times I have had trouble getting it out. This is what happens when you want to be healthy as much as you can. You start making things up, the mind is very powerful and we all need to understand that the doctors spend years studying this stuff. You do not know more than your doctor and the symptoms are not serious at all. Especially when you are young eat healthy and work out.

@@kevinabuuh4570 I'm a barber and the HIV thing that you mention does happen but is really rare! So we normally do everything to keep that from cutting and sometimes will stop the service if anything like that is even possible like if we see a cut or we gave ourselves cuts. Normally what we would do if we see that is stop and immediately take care of the bleeding so that we don't swap blood or anything else like that. Don't worry at all about that cause most barbers I know take that seriously and will do whatever it takes to keep the both of us safe. Not saying its impossible to happen because obviously it does and thats why they teach us this but most barbers and cosmetologist will take these measures to help and keep both the client and themselves safe! Hope this has helped that fear, its really rare that it happens I promise!

So far, everything has gotten better. And somehow that works in my mind because I have made a decision, so I don’t worry as much because I know I’m not going to act right then.

That's why daily habits and distractions are imperative for handling anxiety. Being productive and living your life as normal will give you reassurance that the condition and symptoms still aren't incapacitating you from tackling goals. Start with one step at a time, until your daily schedule is a bit too full for you to worry about your health 24/7. Anxiety symptoms will always be there, but just knowing that you still have power over them is extremely empowering when it comes to dealing with them.

@@sworthyboyI got really sick the second time I got Covid and later got post Covid. I started feeling tingling and numbness in my right leg and arm. I did think much of it but decided to go see a doctor. The doctor who wasn’t the smoothest so to speak told me cold turkey it could be symptoms of MS. My whole world came crashing down. I had an MRI on both brain and spine with that contrast liquid. I had to wait 3 months for my results due to the high pressure on the healthcare system during the pandemic. I was a complete mess during those months with constant stress and anxiety. I was constantly monitoring my body. Every tingle, numbness, spasms or twitching was confirmation to me that I had MS. The results came and I was fine. They could not see a single thing wrong with me. They even told me that my brain looked better than it should due to my age (I was 35 at the time). They usually see some age related changes on the gray matter but I had very little. This was almost two years ago and even though I have papers telling me I’m completely fine I still monitor my body constantly actively trying to find something wrong. Those three anxiety filled months waiting for what I thought was basically a death sentence reprogrammed my brain and I can’t correct it.

I was researching common types of cancers before remembering that hypochondria is a thing, and this video hit way too close to home. I have been diagnosed with ADHD about 2 years ago and things started to make sense. My dad passed away that year. A year or so later for some reason I started really paying attention to my body and I would get a sore chest sensation or my heart would race so I would stress about that and my heart would race even more. I started researching for lung diseases and found pneumonia that says you get a burning sensation in your chest and I swear that very instant my chest started to heat up and I rushed to my closest family to take me to the hospital. Turns out I had bronchitis in my oesophagus. They did an EKG and said everything looks fine but I started getting the idea that my heart is faulty, that it will suddenly stop beating in my sleep. I would obsessively check my heart rate all the time and get anxious if I don't physically feel my heart in my chest.
It's been months later and I still feel like there's something wrong with my chest or heart. I don't get it, I've never had this type of anxiety before. But it's exhausting

  • @amyjones2119
    @amyjones2119 Год назад +24

As a fellow sufferer, all I can say is that somehow you have to find the mental fortitude to not Google anything. I don't let myself google a single symptom. And you need to learn things that tell you that you're having a panic attack, like your neck tingling or maybe your hand will twitch or something. I'm still trying to free myself from this illness but these things have helped me. Googling symptoms will only make you feel worse, and the doctor doesn't want you to google things because then they have to explain the illness you think you have and why you don't have it. There's a reason why they're the doctor and not you! You can't meaningfully interpret the information you will find. I would also recommend yoga because it's about feeling your body and calming down. That way you can learn to feel physical sensations without panicking.

I’ve been called a hypochondriac (by my mom) since I was 12 and I’m 34 now and my husband pretty much says the same thing. I’ve gone as far as getting a MRI brain scan, endoscopy, colonoscopy…. Everything has been fine so far yet here I am waking up every day feeling like I am having a heart attack because my panic is so bad.

I hope you find reassurance in knowing you’re not alone. My siblings and I are all hypochondriac. My heart breaks for my younger sister, though, because she’s always so stressed and anxious over her health that she loses rest because of how much she overthinks it. She visited the doctor recently and had all her blood test results come back completely normal- in fact, the doctor reassured her by explaining how her test results show how perfectly healthy she is- yet she still can’t stop worrying.
My newest self-diagnosed health concern is mild hearing loss :) a few days ago, my ears felt muffled and my hearing wasn’t clear/optimal. I started panicking of course, and suspected a tumour in my eustachian canal (to be honest I don’t even know if it’s possible to grow a tumour over there).
Now I’m suspecting impacted earwax getting in the way of hearing, with a small pimple on my external ear as evidence to the fact that earwax is the culprit.
Absolutely irrational and insensible, yet I can’t stop worrying, too.
You’re not alone, we’re both going to be alright

I've had disabling health anxiety my entire life. I suspect it's because when I often WAS truly sick as a teen, my parents wouldn't believe me and I'd end up in the hospital so sick I had to have immediate care. As an adult, I've had doctors dismiss me because of my anxiety disorder, and they actually did miss a stomach illness I'm now on meds for the rest of my life for. So I feel like it's extremely hard for me to beat this health anxiety I have, because I have a lot of proof in my past that I wasn't believed, and I got seriously ill. I've also had bad reactions to medications, so every time I get prescribed a new one, I research for hours all the serious side effects and think 'what if they don't believe me like last time?' It's exhausting. I've spent nights having panic attacks for hours that leave me dizzy and with tension pain the next day. I sometimes shake so hard I just freeze up. I also have emetophobia something horrible. I'll isolated at home alone in bed if I feel too nauseated. I'm 34 now. My life has been miserable and others get so annoyed with me, and it's gotten to where now now one ever believes a word I say about my health. It's ruined my life. I havea therapist and psychiatrist, I've taken DBT and done some CBT work, nothing is working.

I’m so sorry. I too had actual medical conditions dismissed as a kid and adult which makes me think doctors don’t really know everything and can’t really be trusted. If I trusted their judgement, and they took the time to explain why the symptoms weren’t “X”, then my anxiety would be much less.

I caught Covid one 2021 and i was bedridden even with my young age. My father also got pneumonia and he nearly passed away, so that also affected me. I felt like I was dying everyday.. every symptom (which could be explained by anxiety) I assumed was some serious illness like cancer or that I would have a heart attack. It’s gotten slightly better, I have my good days and my bad days, but it so stressful and scary. This video helps knowing I’m not alone and recovery IS possible. It’s so unfortunate so many of us are experiencing this but baby steps will get us closer to healing each day.

Google is a horrible place to look for symptoms. Ur brain loves to come up with symptoms that u don’t even have. I can't even express how helpful these videos are... I previously would've identified as someone with GAD but lately it has escalated to hypochondria and it's genuinely debilitating at this point. I have been tested for so many different things and everything comes back as perfectly healthy but when i'm in a moment of extreme dizziness and chest pain I struggle to calm down and rationalise it. It's really hard to get an appointment with a psychologist at the moment so these videos are amazing at helping me realise what i'm going through. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for making this. I have suffered from health anxiety for a few years now, and it affects my life in so many ways. When it was at its worst, I was unable to leave my house because I feared everything. I still greatly struggle with it today, but i’ve grown to realize that not every anxious feeling means there is something wrong with me.

Hypochondria is more struggle when people always preach "Listen to you gut feeling".
Every symptom we experience feels like a gut-feeling and that starts making it worse.

But they’re like “it’s just your anxiety!” And i get even more scared cause i think im about to die and all i do is cry. Does anyone get a new “problem” and then days or weeks after, see signs (videos, newspaper clippings, commercials, etc.) about the perceived problem and get even more convinced you have it because these are signs solidifying it or are warning you? Or even get vivid/realistic dreams that you have an illness and then you’re convinced when you wake up that your dream was trying to warn you?...OCD/hypochondriac diagnosis here.
