  • There’s a bidirectional relationship between gastrointestinal disorders and anxiety. This relationship is thought to be controlled by a gut-brain connection. Research studies have concluded that there is signaling between the gut and the brain that affects the way we think and behave.

Update: hello to everyone reading this! Just wanted to say I hope you’re all staying positive, I know that having severe anxiety/panic attacks is the absolute worst. Just know that you’re not alone, and there’s so many things to do to improve your quality of life. Lately I’ve been incredibly stressed with school and my anxiety is now starting to cause dizziness and panic attacks almost daily. There are times when I actually feel so upset that I’m feeling this way, but I’m doing my best and taking it day by day. See, you’re not alone! • @casario2808
      @casario2808 3 дня назад

Yes but I think she under emphasizes just how much these "functional" ailments START from stress/emotional issues, not just exasperating them. Big difference for treatment approach. If your GI issues are rooted in stress, and you go to a doctor to try to sort it out "medically", that can be counterproductive ...ie when we consider these ailments, tha5 have no organic cause, for the most part, are Mind Body or learned "neuroplastic" pain.
Actual infection? Sure, threat it medically, of course. But most IBS sufferers do not find parasites or infections. And even if they do, at least for things like SIBO, antibiotics don't always work. It's still the brain at work, keeping score, and the body is the scorecard

This is 100% true. I want to try and help somebody by telling my story. About 4 years ago I started having really bad anxiety, was finding it hard to go to work or be around people or perform any kind of task. I went to a few doctors and told them that I feel like my anxiety is worse when things are going wrong with my gut. None of them batted an eyelid until the last one who told me pretty much the same thing as this video. She recommended me some books to read so I read them, and did a whole lifestyle change. My wife and I started making all fermented foods, our own kombucha, our own kefir, our own kimchi, fermented veggies, I cut out sugar, I cut out booze, started exercising EVERY day, and I can't tell you what a difference it all made. Much like this video said it doesn't eliminate the anxiety, but it puts you back in the drivers seat, it gave me power over the anxiety so that I could deal with that. 4 years later I feel 1000% better than what I did then. I'm not completely without anxiety but I have much, much more control to the point where it isn't impacting my life more than I imagine a normally 'anxious' person would be. I also was able to start re-introducing some naughty things, sweets, alcohol, and just learning what I can get away with without it impacting me. If your anxiety stems from gut problems like in this video, please, tackle your gut health first, and see what a huge difference it will make!

After watching this video I can’t help but think all this anxiety is being triggered by my stomach. This made me feel so much better. I’ve been living with IBS for over 10 years, with the last 2 years getting progressively worse. It’s unfortunately gotten to the point where I am experiencing consistent intense daily pain no matter what I do. I am also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and persistent depressive disorder, which have also become significantly worse over the past year or so. Almost every single day I find myself crying in a heap on the floor asking the empty room “Why can’t I just be normal for one day” and feeling so overwhelmed by physical and emotional pain that I just want everything to stop. I know at times my brain is actively working against me, floating anxiety across my consciousness and into my stomach, but it’s so hard to hold onto that fact and remember it’s a passing feeling when I’m in it. I always feel like I will always be in pain, and my brain has done a very good job of creating barriers to keep that way of thinking in place and they are so incredibly hard to take down…

If you're not taking any meds, may I suggest something?
If you put together a smoothie of equal parts red cabbage, carrots and celery, daily, that will help repair and re-line the stomach wall. Try also cultivating your OWN kefir milk, drinking small amounts daily (5-10 teaspoons) because it has the beneficial bacteria she mentioned. Also, increase your Fibre intake (prebiotic), as this helps 'feed' the probiotics in kefir and in your stomach. (Try introducing garlic and ginger into your diet - prebiotics). I used to be INCREADIBLY depressed, and would suffer from unrelenting reflux for DAYS at a time, but then I did all that and I'm beginning to feel much better. (changed my diet to low carb with no crap too). Thinking about the past or the future doesn't help so try to occupy yourself with hobbies and pastimes.
Above all, start over with maybe 2 (small) meals a day, and DON'T beat yourself up for ANYTHING - be gentle with yourself. BTW, the main cause of acid reflux us NOT ENOUGH acid in the STOMACH, so it has to 'borrow' some from the intestines, which is HIGHLY acidic. To increase stomach acid healthily, take an apple cider vinegar pill 10 minutes before eating.

    Wow. I have to say.
Over the weekend I had a hefty meal and had a bad time digesting my food.
My chest felt like caving in and my anxiety shot thru the roof. For the rest of the weekend I have had a horrific time fighting this anxiety.
This is most definitely a wake up call to be healthy.
My brother went through the same thing and now it eases me a bit to know it could be the underlying cause of my Anxiety.
I will work hard and choose what to eat especially when it comes time to bed.
    Thank you so much!

This is so true! Thank you Dr. Tracey Marks.
I have had stomach/GI problem about 13 years ago. Every now and then when I feel anxious, my digestive issues become worsen. In Chinese medicine, gut health is related "emotions". This totally makes sense.
So learning to reduce and cope with stress is just as important as eating healthy food/diet.

Thankyou so much for this ,your presentations are so concise and well done. It's taken me far too long to realise the immense gut brain connection ,as soon as I become slightly stressed /anxious my digestion and IBS become a frightening torture . I stopped a heavy smoking habit of 46years with no nicotine replacement , biggest mistake ever ,my anxiety and gastro problems went totally off the scale . Three months on and I am using nicotine gum and symptoms now much more manageable . Thankyou again for your excellent work .

@@avill012 hmm i started again with this food tracker thingy today. So, i'm very sure, i lack quite a bit ressources. Uhm and low sugar looks a lot different for me xD
Well, most of my heavy tiredness problems are related to a bunch of low ressources. Magnesium, iron, b12, d, proteins, sugar, whatever. It pretty much feels always the same, unless i see it directly with some little self-monotoring stuff. It's also very normal for me, to fall apart from a healthy diet, i guess. But today i should have enough of pretty much everything there is.
At some point food is also the only thing you care about in the most developed countries. But i guess i'm not the only struggling with their basic needs from time to time. Anxiety stuff also happens more regularly to me, if i'm already more brocken than usual, because it's then getting harder to be as ready as usually. Anxiety also releases stress hormone (cortisol), which causes the body to produce extra levels of stomach acid. That acidity causes the lining of the esophagus to become irritated, and this can lead to stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, and in severe cases, stress-induced ulcers.👍

In this case am I suppose to be treating the anxiety first or take acid reflux medication to calm the stomach in order to lower the anxiety from all the stomach issue. I feel like it becomes a cycle. There is a lot of evidence painting in the other direction. That acidity actually decreases, which makes more sense really, diverting digestive power away from stomach when stressed and instead channel blood to the brain and limbs.

Ooofff girl yes, this is true. Whenever I would get acid reflux or heartburn (not as severe as GERD) , it started leading to anxiety, it even made me think I was having a heart attack once. I ended up going to urgent care, got some heart related test done, and was diagnosed with General Anxiety. I got a psychiatrist, got on lexapro, and with the help of my therapist was able to seperate anxiety from stomach pains (and other pains). My life has gotten a lot better, I am as happy as can be. This video and reading people’s comments actually help me a lot. I have Gerd and a hiatus hernia and most times have terrible symptoms which lead to stomach cancer thoughts. The only way for me to get relief is acid blocking medication. This then feeds into more anxiety as I hate taken this medication because we don’t know what health implications they will have in the future. Anxiety and stress are awful and I wouldn’t wish them on my worst enemy. I read somewhere in the comments that replacing negative thoughts with good ones can help. This seems to be logical as our gut and brain are linked. Also, I think we can all relate to having good thoughts in our heads such as a nice memory or just thinking of our loved ones. I wish all good health and well-being.

Marsha, Mind and body are closely related. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a healthier life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Day or night, when taking a walk, when reading, on the phone, before sleep etc sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instanly. Reduce spicey-oily foods, drink warm water early morning on an empty stomach and eat less at night. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Also was having asthma along with vocal cord disfunction. Come to find out a few years ago, the acid splashing up and over into my lungs was causing the asthma, which triggered the VCD and anxiety cause I felt like I couldn't breath. Was a mess. I was taking 2 different meds for the reflux, but it hardly worked. Once I figured out that many foods were triggering the reflux and staying away from them really helped. Also taking a cap full of apple cider vinegar with small amount of water really helped. I found the apple cider vinegar pills and take them twice daily, still have to stay away from the food that trigger reflux. So mostly the reflux is way better. I do also take probiotics and prebiotics daily. I still feel nervous a lot, but not panic. Doing EMDR with a therapist weekly is helping some. I have had depersonalization for 35 years and just been learning the last few years that it is caused from anxiety, so am trying to figure out all the passed upsets that caused all the anxiety and deal with them, so I can heal.

A great test people can do to rule out gut parasites is a DNA G.I. Mapping Test + add Zonulin test. This test is usually not done at your local doctor's office and is a private test, - and more comphrehensive than alot of the outdated testing offered to people today. This test allows people to look at gut parasites and other co-infections that usually go undetected in the body. Thank you for this video!

You are SO right!! Dr Tracy you have hit the nail on the head, to the letter. It's not just anxiety, by the way, it's also stress! Very advanced medicine here. Stress, can affect your breathing which makes you think you're having a heart attack which produces more stress, quite unnerving.
Another one is you go to bed and wake up with really bad indigestion or wind, you then take your blood pressure out of interest, then the BP is off the chart - so then you're convinced you're having a heart attack (again) this increases your stress level and nauseam....
Best solution, drink water, remove yourself from the stressor, calm down, use relaxation techniques and your body will follow, it's not easy but it works. Start with your mind and your body will follow.☮️

Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts and anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Deep inhalation-exhalation is not needed. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down, be still and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make the above practice a permanent habit to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor

Mis respetos a cada profesional que encara un problema de salud a partir de una dieta sana y no va directo a llenarnos de medicamentos! Buena información, muchas gracias!

This explanation makes everything make much more sense. Sometimes it seems that everything I eat bothers my stomach and it obviously can't be everything I eat.

So glad I found this. I have GERD and IBS, hardly ever get more than 3-4 hours of sleep at night, and anxiety. The past 3 years were hell. I was working 50 -60 hours a week and caring for my mother. She passed last year from a bowel blockage. Since then, my stomach issues have gone through the roof (as have my anxiety issues apparently). I’ve been so sick 2x that I had to go to the ER. Once in February and once in July. I am sure some of my anxiety comes from my job (OTR truck driver) and the fact that I don’t want to do that job anymore, but I have bills to pay. This video is one more tool in my arsenal of help which I have been seeking.

Great video. Growing up i was always a VERY "cool, calm and collected" individual. When I developed ulcerative colitis at age 19 though it turned me into a bit of a different person emotionally. Every time colitis flares or seems that a flare is coming, I deal with issues of anxiety and even slight depression it sucks. Natural foods, fermented foods/drinks and stress relieving practices have helped a ton though.
