Excellent description of all the ways self-medicating with herbs can HARM you. Cannot tell you how many patients show up with no awareness at all that they are dosing themselves into a crisis!! If you think that most people are careful and look at the contraindications of these herbs, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. I don't need this kind of business, so thanks for being crystal clear on all of the ways these herbs can be misused and create problems. Being natural doesn't mean without potential harm.
Cannabis was the first of the 3 herbs in the promo image, however it wasn't covered in your discussion. It's my favourite treatment for anxiety & depression. Thankfully both CBD & THC preparations are legal & available in my part of Australia.
I'm developing mental health programming right now and this is a wonderful addition for me to consider. I call tending to my community garden plot, along the bay off of Lake Ontario, in this lovely underused green space no less, "going to church". About 4 years ago, I told my psychiatrist that I wanted to try alternatives for treating my mental health (BPD, MDD, PMDD, PME and ADHD) She was nervous, but helped me safely wean off psychiatric medicine that I'd been taking for 15 years (tried so many different medications and I never felt improvement). My symptoms are more improved on Mediterranean diet, and my top 3 for depression are albizia julibrissin (this is the only one to help the severity of my depression), butterfly pea flower, and lavender. I would not be here without albizia julibrissin, I was getting so tired of fighting to stay alive. Thank God for my psychiatrist helping me get off those meds. Haven't attempted since 2018, haven't self harmed in a few years, and I am holding a job for the first time, got my driver's license and am going to school again. I haven't tried st John's wort, feel nervous to, but I add turmeric to my anti inflammatory drink every morning to help with neuropathy, good stuff. Great video, im so glad there are open minded professionals like you out there.
This is wonderful to hear. You are taking great care of your mental health and it sounds like your psychiatrist has your back. Have a wonderful holiday season!
i am currently in a situation where the medicines ive been taking for 8 years didnt help because no one cared enough to go to the root of my problem. i got extremely burnt out which doesnt seem like normal burnout, quit college, basically never go outside because my anxiety has skyrocketed, i stopped my benzos and had to go through withdrawals for a while, it's eased a little bit now. but i would much rather not be on prescription medicines because it internally made me feel horrible. im on the path of finding herbs that actualy help me, i have no guidance in this aspect right now. im starting to lose hope because none of the herbs are providing me any strong sense of relief for a chronic condition like mine and im nervous to try st johns wort again because the cycle of getting disappointed over and over again is tiring me. herbs are not a quick fix, but i really want to see some relief in sight.
Thank you for information. I'm currently taking Turmeric for it's anti-inflammatory and blood sugar properties. I'm glad to know it's helping in other areas, too.
With my diagnosed CPTSD, I used SJW for several years, until I realized it kept me in a narrow range of emotion and I 😢needed more color in my life. I love those herbs and many others for depression... i get all of mine from Tria Alchemy since they work faster and better than others in my experience. I believe potency and active constituents are key to people being able to notice a difference. After seeing how taking even the same herbs or mushrooms from several other sources didn't really seem to help unless I took a LOT extra, which became quite expensive and more of a hassle in my routine to where I'd forget to take them at all.

I know some medical professionals dont believe in it but I feel like its important to note that one shouldn't combine st. john's wort with SSRI's and many other meds/supplements that increase serotonin levels because of the risk of serotonin syndrome which apparently can be fatal. At least from what Ive read, dont know how common serotonin syndrome is.
Yes that's true, and it can occur from combining any serotonin acting substances together. Serotonin syndrome is on a spectrum: it can be mild or can be life threatening. I've had moderate serotonin syndrome before from combining too many supplements and meds.
Very true, st john's wort should NEVER be taken together with SSRIs and even if you discontinue them you should wait at least 2 weeks for your body to really flush the SSRIs out or you risk serotonergic syndrome.
@@BeingBetter Hmm. I didnt know you could have mild cases of serotonin syndrome, I assumed it was relatively the same across the board and across individuals but I guess it makes sense given the many different variables at play. Glad you're ok though.
@@virginiamontaldo440 but what if you're taking st. john's wort and get prescribed an ssri? Does it take the same amount of time to (for lack of a better word) "detox" from st. jons wort?
@@StainsStainsStains I don't know. St John's wort is not toxic though (unlike SSRIs, who gave me intoxication in the long term) and it works by a different mode of action. It can give photosensitivity to some people as far as I know. In doubt, consult a herbal doctor who is also knowledgeable on antidepressants. If you got prescribed st john's wort by a herbal doctor he/she probably knows what you should be doing in this case.
This was so well skripted and differentiated. 🙏 Where I live some people think St. Johns Wort is a fix for everything, when it is much more nuanced. Antidepressants still have their place and value if all the herbs do not work.
And for some people, like my former best friend, St John's Wort had the opposite effect on her. It actually made her more depressed instead of less. She learned that she was one of the few people who shouldn't take it.
I found CBD helpful, I take a concentrated CBD paste (you can get oils etc too, just make sure it's good quality). You have to be consistent, I take mine 3x a day. It definitely cut the amount of panic attacks etc I was having.

We thought we were going ing to lose him before x- mass … but he hung on until yesterday …we had to get him euthanised . He was in too much pain 💔. I can’t believe how much it hurts .
People keep saying the typical ….oh well he’s free now ,blah blah blah … he,s free now / he’s in a better place blah blah blah …IT DOSE NOT HELP . Just be there for the person . Empathise with them .. let them cry …hug them if it feels right . THE REALITY IS 👉 there are no words 👈 Just empathise and be there … if you can . From family members and friends who have taken their own lives …. You don’t need to fill the empty space with words - but don’t stop being their for those people …..they feel empty and isolated already👉don’t stop visiting people because YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE and don’t know what to say …. 👉👉JUST BE THERE 👈 .
A word of advice to people who feel the need to say such things - please don’t do it to people who have lost someone Or a pet …
So sorry for your loss ❤

So sorry for your loss
I’m so sorry 😢 for the loss of your beloved cat 🐱. It is the hardest thing in the world to lose a pet. My heart 💜 goes out to you.
great video again Dr.
thanks again for keeping the sounds and animations low and not distracting.
I've found Lemon Balm tea to be wonderful as well.
Excellent for anxiety
Cannabis was the first of the 3 herbs in the promo image, however it wasn't covered in your discussion. It's my favourite treatment for anxiety & depression. Thankfully both CBD & THC preparations are legal & available in my part of Australia.
It's what I do too! 💯
It's the only thing that works for me

I'm developing mental health programming right now and this is a wonderful addition for me to consider. I call tending to my community garden plot, along the bay off of Lake Ontario, in this lovely underused green space no less, "going to church". I have certain calming plants like lavender and lemon balm, chamomile, the usual suspects. It's wonderful to learn more about how the plants you mention act on the body. Thank you so much for your work!
This content is extremely professional and comprehensive 💜🐰
You are the most informative person on RUclips when it comes to mental health. Thank you.
Dr. Marks, you are a positive triple threat much needed in this virtual world of information. Your demeanor, delivery and succinct and clear information flow are absolutely so needed and appreciated. I am an Art Therapist and thank you for your channel.
Wish you had mentioned some of the best holistic antidepressants like 5-HTP and medicinal mushrooms
I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area. I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did

Exercise! Exercise can help with depression in many people.
Some of us need a boost to even have the energy to exercise.. but once we get going, it is very helpful..
@@KishBish Believe me, I've been there too! I just remind myself that I'll feel better when I'm done and that usually gives me the energy boost to get going.
Exercise doesn't boost my mood. It just leaves me feeling exhausted.
Sadly my regular bike rides never knocked me out my serious depression I was always scared of trying magic mushrooms I might eventually try one of the ones you just mentioned. I also didn't respond to rtms . I read fecal transplant can also cure depression
@RJones-tn5vg when I was young exercise did boost my mood biking tennis not anymore

Dr Tracey thank you for bringing all this valuable information to us. You’ve helped me to get through so many difficult moments in my life. Thanks for the great information for treating depression.
Wow!! Your awesome, I love your videos, they’re so easy to understand and wonderfully helpful. Thank you ❤
Great video, turmeric has also been found to fight cancer at all 3 stages.
Did your psychiatrist guide you on the mediterranean supplements or did you find those out yourself?
@@alexandra4real360 my dietitian guided me on the Mediterranean diet. The herbal supplements I found myself and figured out my dosage myself.
i am currently in a situation where the medicines ive been taking for 8 years didnt help because no one cared enough to go to the root of my problem. i got extremely burnt out which doesnt seem like normal burnout, quit college, basically never go outside because my anxiety has skyrocketed, i stopped my benzos and had to go through withdrawals for a while, it's eased a little bit now. but i would much rather not be on prescription medicines because it internally made me feel horrible. im on the path of finding herbs that actualy help me, i have no guidance in this aspect right now. im starting to lose hope because none of the herbs are providing me any strong sense of relief for a chronic condition like mine and im nervous to try st johns wort again because the cycle of getting disappointed over and over again is tiring me. herbs are not a quick fix, but i really want to see some relief in sight.
Which albizia? Dry herb, tincture? Where do you get it?
I have tried all three! They all helped me! I took St John’s for a while and then switched to Terry Natural’s Saffron with Curcumin when I got on BC
I have St.Johns Wart, and I am not bipolar, but, I may try it after I see my own Dr. To make sure I need it.
Yes please! More plant based options. Thank you so much.
Thank you for information. I'm currently taking Turmeric for it's anti-inflammatory and blood sugar properties. I'm glad to know it's helping in other areas, too.
Does it bother your stomach? I Have struggled with digestive issues in the past but I want to try it.
Just try it lol it won't kill u
Thank you for the info. Please include details on doses in your next video and a recommendation for a cookbook with recipes.
With my diagnosed CPTSD, I used SJW for several years, until I realized it kept me in a narrow range of emotion and I 😢needed more color in my life. So I tried stopping it and cruised into a nice emotional experience of my life with a normal emotional range. 2021 was a bit tough, but my Reiki healing has cured my depression symptoms completely. Reiki is pretty amazing.
Psychedelic is the answer to most severe anxiety and depression...The use of magic mushrooms completely helps one get over depression and makes you feel like yourself...I used antidepressants for some years but it only made me feel like a zombie but with immediate use of mushroom 🍄 in few months I feel like I'm living a whole new Life.
I made researches and found out that shrooms are very helpful , it has really helped to reduce anxiety and depression and some other mental health issues..i would love to try magic mushrooms but they are hard to source!
I live in Michigan….suffering for awhile now but didnt realize how serious I may have it until recently - probably bc of @self medicating” with alcohol

I've been having this constant, unbearable anxiety because of university stress..not until I met Myco_louiis.. he really helped me

Excellent video, easy to understand.
Can you please do a video on Zhi San Sou for people with heavy mucous/sinus drainage, coughing. Dicyclomine is useless, so is the other prescriptions written for by MDs. The acupuncturist recommended Zhi San Sou. Thank you.
You rock for this, Dr. Marks!
Niacin gave me a similar reaction st. John's wort. But I actually needed it. So I allowed myself to have some pain to stop a panic attack.
You deserve your own TV show- your such a blessing

Thanks for your concise explanations.
I'm very glad you didn't advocate cannabis as a treatment for depression, as I feared you would! I think I will start using turmeric in my cooking more often.
It causes anxiety and paranoia but helps me more than anything also acid lol
Adhd anxiety and depression is my resume and cannabis is by far the best treatment I've ever had but unfortunately I live in a none legalized state searching for other natural alternatives but so far cannabis is unmatched in my opinion.
What about Ashwaganda
Turmeric is great for arthritis and body aches!

St John's wort is a powerful herb!! It's important to mention that it might neuter hormonal contraception! Very important to mention and remember! Please be careful ladies
Very helpful and very informative. Thank you so much Dr! I love your videos

I bought your Book in my Country, it is very handy and insightful book. i thank you for that.
I noticed you have a something that looks like marijuana in your thumbnail but never mentioned it in your video. I can testify that marijuana lifted me out of 2 decades of depression
I used to eat curcumin alot, automaticly, the last years. I love the taste. : ) Now, because of this video, I bought saffron for the first time in my life. I'm looking forward to test it the next days/weeks.
Wow doc, another informative and great video
Amen
And for some people, like my former best friend, St John's Wort had the opposite effect on her. It actually made her more depressed instead of less. She learned that she was one of the few people who shouldn't take it.
Very Interesting nice to be able to help others with this information! THANK YOU
Love your informative videos . Thank you 😊

Love this!!! Are there herbs that help with anxiety?
I found CBD helpful, I take a concentrated CBD paste (you can get oils etc too, just make sure it's good quality). You have to be consistent, I take mine 3x a day. It definitely cut the amount of panic attacks etc I was having.
Lemon Balm tea has taken the edge off my anxiety. And it has a good flavor.
Magnesium citrate. Look up her video on it
Good ones for anxiety are CBD, skullcap, valerian, magnesium glycinate, lemon balm, passion flower, kava, bacopa, and lithium orotate.
