    These models gm trucks have these common problem of torque converter getting shot. They have a design flaw for the torque converter. Our 2018 chevy silverado torque converter went out at 120k miles. We chose to rebuilt it. The transmission specialist shop replaced it with an aftermarket redesigned torque convertor and also installed a separate cooler just for the transmission to extend the life of the tranny because these gm models also have these problem of overheating tranny fluid. Hopefully this fixes the problem. Listen to Scotty Kilmer and get a Toyota. Our 2006 Toyota camry has 370k miles with the original engine and tranny.

    Is there anything I could do to prevent this? I just bought the same exact truck not knowing about this common issue. I plan on draining the tranny fluid and changing the filter. As well as adding a Sure Cool System by Superior to keep the fluid cooler.

    • @expressautotransmissiondav4207
      @expressautotransmissiondav4207  3 года назад +5

      In all honesty there's no prevention that I'm aware of outside of starting over. If the truck already has miles on it, then it's to late. I don't believe in mystery in a bottle. The sure cure could help prolong the inevitable failure, but it will not prevent it. My suggestion would be to plan for the failure, we bought a 2015 when it had 60k on it and started saving and had the money to repair when it failed. I hope this helps if we can do anything to help just let me know.

Shit my 2001 corvette 6-speed has 80k miles and still doesnt surge or slip one bit and i drive that MF HARD. GM can make a solid trans. Great video I have an allison 1000 6 speed on an 18 duramax. The thing slips and when I take it to dealersship it magically does not slip from 3rd to 4th shift but when am driving uphill it definitively slips. Still has warranty they replaced valve body and it got a little better as far as it doesn't slam the shift as hard as it did before. But am wasting all this time taking it to chevy and having them not see the problem. My next step is to take it with a horse trailer so it has a heavier load and see if they feel it slipping. Any help would be appreciated. Truck is a dually stock everything 90k miles. The only mod is a ranch hand front bumper, no diesel tank in the bed not even a tool box.

    • @expressautotransmissiondav4207
      @expressautotransmissiondav4207  2 года назад +2

      There's a few different ways to approach this. I personally would start with the service advisor and try to be as clear about the problem as possible. For example mph rpm temp gear range load time of driving type of driving as well. The reason for so much information is to help the technician narrow down to a specific complaint. The 2-3 flair has been a known issue with the 6 spd for some time. If the dealer you are working with is not being as cordial as you'd like. The second option would be speak with a different dealer or a local trans specialist try to get hard proof of your concern to take back to the dealer. You will probably be out some diag fee no matter what, but the end result may be a lot better. If you do take it to a local shop explain to them the situation and make sure they understand your intentions of the diagnosis. I hope this helps you get this taken care of. Thanks for the support we appreciate it.

      That definitely helps! I have tried to be as specific as I can but they drive the truck on the highway on 5th and 6th gear when I tell them highway driving is fine. That is my next step a different chevy dealership. On a diferent note the first thing the transmission technician stated was that I was only bringing it in because it had 90k miles and warranty on the allison is 100k. Additionally he said this is my first allison transmission repair! So he attempted but since the trans had no codes allison approved for valve body only. Which took care of 80% of the problem but I still feel the trans slip. Now I noticed the mileage meter does not measure correctly: ie. Drove 28 miles to chevy dealership my truck said it drove 37 miles. I measured it again and it did the same thing. I compared it with mapquest and on a stock toyota suv. The toyota was accurate my truck was off by 5 miles on the way back home.

    I’m going through this now with my 2015 Suburban. They put a new transmission in and STILL had same exact Torque Converter issue. Now they are putting ANOTHER transmission in. Should I be concerned about motor damage at this point?

    • @expressautotransmissiondav4207
      @expressautotransmissiondav4207  2 года назад

      I would be checking motor performance once new trans is installed. Missfires can often be confused with tcc shutter

    • @expressautotransmissiondav4207
      @expressautotransmissiondav4207  2 года назад

      Also verify cooler was flushed properly to not contaminate the new trans

    • @jasoncarstmusic
      @jasoncarstmusic 2 года назад

      It was definitely diagnosed as a bad torque converter. They replaced the transmission. Then, the truck was doing the same thing immediately after replacement (shudder, slipping, jolting, grinding, etc.). They are in the process of putting ANOTHER transmission in it. I am just worried about the abuse the motor took with all the harshness the transmission produced. Thank you. You have great videos!

      There's a multitude of different reasons for converter failure but the biggest fault is in the regulator system. There have been many updates and upgrades to both the 6 and 8 spds however failure is still imminent.

      The mentality behind the shudder fix is based on fluid only the shutter your experiencing is a mechanical issue. Personally I don't the it's would be worth the cost of the bottle to use it in this situation.

      Cool just making sure. So early on when the 15-16 just came out they had issues with converter lining. It's possible you have an internal issue. The best thing to do would be to get it diagnosed by a very qualified shop. Looking at slip speed vs dod is a great place to start. If crusing it doesn't show enough slip to activate the code then I would clean mass air and verify everything in order of air flow to make sure it's actually having a lock up concern. If you have a scanner I would be more than happy to help with walk through of code chart and theory of operation.

I cleared the P0741 once and we ran with no issue. Stopped for fuel and while on surface streets it popped up again. This time it won’t clear and is accompanied by P0700. I spoke to a local shop and have appointment in the morning. I’m not sure if I should drive in manual mode without tow/haul engaged. Is that a bad idea?
