    Distrowatchs #1 ranking is not particularly meaningful. It definitely isn't a claim to most common use or popularity, no matter how great an OS it is. So I hope any 'newcomers' who don't understand Distrowatchs 'ranking' don't get the wrong impression.

      It's more so as a guide line. If you ask people, name the top 10 Linux distro's. That ranking list on Distrowatch isn't to far off. What every someone says its going to be in the top 20-25 distrowatch rankings. Anyway Distrowatch ranking is explain on their site. Distrowatch isn't hiding or trying to trick anyone.

    • @nellaiseemai
      @nellaiseemai 10 месяцев назад

      Yes. Distrowatch in Alexa ranking comes way below Linux Mint, that means it gets less visits than LM. But it ranks distros based on visits/clicks from its website. So a website (LM) which got more visits than another website (DW) ranked lower based on clicks it gets through that lower ranked website (DW). 😂😑

    I think they should keep the vertical panel. It's what makes MX distinct against other distros that use XFCE, like Ubuntu's use of GNOME with having a vertical panel by default as well.
    Coming from Windows, used to not like Xubuntu having the panel at the top by default either. But quite quickly no longer cared when i figured out how to customise the desktop, how things move around, and how it can also be used with Plank.
    EDIT: Regarding the distinction, i was referring to the first impression you get based on the distro appearance that can draw some to your distro. Not its unique feature set or preinstalled programs you find after exploring the distro deeper.
    Though ironically, a different appearance from most other distros might just lead to users desiring to find out what makes the distro different with what it comes bundled with in this regard!
    I still think they should keep the vertical panel. I like it.

    MX Linux was originally created by the team primarily for their own use. As a number of the devs use it for their daily work, the vertical panel was used so that more space was available for document creation.
    With regard to systemd, MX Linux does make it available for those programs that need it, using something called systemd-shim. It just doesn't use systemd as the default init. This provides users with the best of both worlds.

    The vertical task bar is prob the most sensible. With almost all the monitors being wide screens, vertical space is more precious, so making the bar vertical saves more vertical space.

    • @Swanicorn
      @Swanicorn 11 месяцев назад

      I have been using Linux since 2008, however many years that makes. I started with BSD couldn't get the EDA software I needed so shifted to Ubuntu, it overheated my laptop. I switched to Mint, that ran perfectly. A few years later I got bored of Mint so I switched to PopOS and that was and still is brilliant for a normal user, meaning the ones that don't fuss. But all these years I was mostly stuck with Debian based distros installed on bare metal. Then I found the world of Arch-based distros, and this seems like the perfect Linux. Not bare-Arch but Arch based.
      So with an experience of 15 years using Linux as main OS, I have a few regrets. I don't know why people keep recommending Debian-based and say it is easy for newbies. Oh hell no, it isn't. I tried this MX Linux a week ago after seeing it top DistroWatch for years. I installed the version shown in this video. I read through its handy user manual. It mentioned how to update the system in case there is a notification for the same. Within a few minutes of installing the OS, I got a notification that there were 128 updates available. So I did exactly as the user manual said. Firstly, it took longer than I am used to. I will elaborate that later. Secondly, it ended in a kernel panic. Now, that issue is also device independent cuz it happened on an Intel laptop so I tested it on a latest AMD desktop. No nvidia BS in my hardware. Same result, same error! Unable to boot.
      I know how to get around it, but just saying that these kinds of experiences is what scares people from switching to linux. Such experiences used to scare me in my beginner days as well. So how exactly is MX Linux new user friendly? The first update itself broke the system?? Try it yourself! Do a fresh install of 23 and run the update from the notification. Do not use Linux expertise, cuz we are talking about newbies.
      I praised Arch. People widely say that Arch is bleeding edge so it is prone to breaking. But over the 6 years that I used Arch, it has behaved nicely, the fixes are quick, immediately available on the forums. The MX issue that I faced, is apparently not a common issue cuz I could not easily find any info about fixing it. But like I said I tested it on 2 separate machines and it results in the same error. The updates on Arch run way faster than Debian/Ubuntu based distros. And Arch is a rolling release, unlike most Debian and Ubuntu based stuff. So if anyone has had bad experiences with Linux, I highly request you to try Arch based distros like Arco-Linux and Garuda. If MX is all about custom tools then these other distros too have their similar tools. Arco Linux has a tool called ATT, you know the magic about it? (Think like a newbie) At the click of common-sense buttons you can install any desktop you like and also safely remove them, zero Linux-knowledge required. I am talking freely moving from gnome to kde to openbox to cutefish to UKUI etc, without breaking anything! You can also keep them installed in parallel. So yeah, maybe get out of your MX-worshipping shells if it isn't serving a specific use-case and explore. I am surprised that such a broken OS tops the list. This is weird when I have gotten the least tech-savvy people use Arch linux as main OS, no issues. Usage: Mostly web browser, facebook marketplace, Amazon shopping, reading pdfs, some basic office suite work. These kind of guys can't be expected to see a kernel panic error lol.
      I am not complaining about MX but just sharing my surprising experience. Linux has come so far in terms of consumer usability but MX made me feel like it was still 2008. If you need to stick to Debian, I think nothing beats PopOS for ease of use. It just works.

    I tried out like 10 distros or something, but ended up going with MX 23 as my first linux install for a few weeks now. The MX tools dealy is what made it stand out to me. Also uses like 800 MB of RAM after startup, and it still is cool to see.

      @@MrHurricaneFloyd what am i bashing - i'm merely stating that its popularity is is botted, artifically on #1.
      There's evidently more people using arch, zorin os, linux mint or plain old ubuntu than there is mx linux users. Many casuals go with zorin as surprising as it may seem. And evdn Steam OS has around a million users with the decks units sold. There's no way in hell that MX has more active users than all of these distributions.

    I LOVE MX--- it's GREAT.. but I'm back on SPARKY 7- its' BETTER!!! It's FASTER, simpler, less bloated wtih stuff I will never use- and just MORE FUN... I never see it reviewed on here- and it's a ROLLING RELEASE.. version 7 is around now- based on Debian 12 latest.. and it's VERY VERY FAST-- simple-- much simpler than MX- with some of the SAME tools- the ones I really do USE-- and less bloat.. just BETTER!!! and I have it kde--- Sparky uses ANY or all DEs... and other stuff too.. I can completely RELOAD Sparky- from scratch-- set everything up the way I like WITH all my extra stuff in under 2 hours--- (even on my service here with 4 meg download speed) and it takes ALL DAY on every other distro-- including MX..

      you OBVIOUSLY have not used MX snapshot and iso maker! you can restart a whole system, as you had it in 5 mins!!

      @@jimw7916 Yes I have- and in fact it's available aa an app image now- to use on any distro!!! But I still like Sparky BETTER- it's FASTER and simpler and not bloated with stuff I don't need. I'm NOT knocking MX-- it's GREAT distro!!! I used it exclusively for a long time-- then found Sparky- and I just like it BETTER!!!

    It sucks that there’s no gnome version. Otherwise I would use it.
