The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[2] however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[3]:401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala.[4]
The similarly named Ford Galaxy is a large car/minivan available in the European market. The vehicle's name is believed to be derived from the original Ford Galaxie.
The 1965 Galaxie was an all-new design, featuring vertically stacked dual headlights. The cars were taller and bulkier than the previous year's. The new top-of-the-line designation was the Galaxie 500 LTD and Galaxie 500 XL. The LTD and the XL trim package were accessory upgrades from the base Galaxie model. Engine choices were the same as 1964, except for an all-new 240 cu in (3.9 L) six-cylinder engine replacing the 1950s-era 223 "Mileage-Maker" six and the 352 was now equipped with dual exhausts and a four-barrel carburetor.
Suspension on the 1965 models was redesigned. Replacing the former leaf-spring rear suspension was a new three-link system, with coil springs. Interiors featured a new instrument panel, as well as two-way key vehicle access: the introduction of two keys was for valet parking, where the rounded head key would only open the trunk or locked glove compartment, while the squared head key would only unlock the doors and the ignition.
A new model was introduced for 1966; the Galaxie 500 7 Litre, fitted with a new engine, the 345 hp 428 cu in (7.0 L) Thunderbird V8. This engine was also available on the Ford Thunderbird and the Mercury S-55. The police versions received a 360 hp version of the 428 known as the 'Police Interceptor' as police cars. The 1966 body style was introduced in Brazil (Ford do Brasil) as a 1967 model; it had the same external dimensions throughout its lifetime until Brazilian production ended in 1983. Safety regulations for 1966 required seat belts front and rear on all new cars sold domestically. The Galaxie 500 would be the #3-selling convertible in the U.S. in 1966, with 27,454 sold; it was beaten by the Mustang (at 72,119, by more than 2:1) and by the Impala at 38,000.[26] A parking brake light on the dashboard and an AM/FM radio was optional.[27] The 1966 LTD dropped the Galaxie name.[3]:423
For 1967, the 7 Litre model no longer carried the Galaxie name; it was to be the last year of it being separately identified. That identification was mainly trim such as horn ring and dashboard markings as well as the "Q" in the Vehicle Identification Number. The 7 Litre for 1967 was a trim and performance option on the Ford XL, which was now a separate model as well.[2] Little else changed, except for trim and the styling; the same engines were available, from the 240 cu. inch six-cylinder to the 428 cu. inch V8. Modifications to the styling included adding a major bend in the center of the grille and making the model less "boxy" than the 1966 model. An 8-track tape cartridge player became an option.[28] Back-up lights were standard.[29]
For 1967 all Fords featured a large, padded hub in the center of the plastic steering wheel, along with an energy-absorbing steering column (introduced late into the 1967 model year),[29] padded interior surfaces, recessed controls on the instrument panel, and front outboard shoulder belt anchors. Another safety related change was the introduction of the dual brake master cylinder used on all subsequent Galaxies (and other Ford models).
The 1968 model had a new grille with headlights arranged horizontally, although the body was essentially the same car from the windshield back. The 'long hood, short deck' style with a more upright roofline and a notchback rear was followed too, as was the new trend for concealed headlights on the XL and LTD.

Yeah I still have the one I built back in the mid 80’s , built it as a Super Stock/Gasser type deal. Course it’s been re-built and re-done a few times, where it’s been moved around and stuff so many times over the years, things got knocked off or broken or something, had no choice but to re-do it!

I’ve thought about building this as a moonshine runner. With an opening trunk, it’s a natural choice. Get some 1:24/25 barrels, a keg, or some bottles, stick ‘em in the trunk, mix and match stock and racing parts…and you’ve got a great candidate for hauling white lightning!

Nice build!!!!!!!! I immensely enjoyed this one Chris. Reminded me of the 66 Galaxy my aunt had when I was a kid only her's was a ragtop. I thought I'd let everyone in on a little tidbit. Back in the day racers and bikers believe painting a racecar or a motorcycle green was bad luck. That's why Kawasaki painted thier race bikes green so nobody on the race track would get close to them (much to the disapproval of the head honchos at Kawasaki) It turned out to be a good decision on thier part as they started winning races left and right

The spare tire and jack are due to the trunk lid being open. The gas tank goes between the rear axle and trunk depression on a stock car, where the holes are. the headlight covers come from a prior NASCAR version. Racers tend to paint their engines white to easily spot leaks. Good point on the hood scoop, it's really not a scoop but a heat extractor like the original tear drop design found on Thunderbolts. When given a choice of two different colored decals of names for a car, i tend to put them one over the other, staggered, as if one is the shadow of the other--sometimes it works better against the choice of background color for the car (like a light shadow on a decal color close to the shade of the car itself)
Nice video--i did one of mine with the stock grill and John Deere Green as well.

I have pretty much that same kit, car on my shelf now, but mine is one that I built 30-35 years ago, it’s amazing to me that I still have the dang thing, I have it and a 65 Chevelle wagon and a 65 El Camino, all which I built close together back then and all Gassers too! Those 3 are the oldest models that I have left, oh I’ve got quite a few other models ( cars) that are almost that old, probably 25-30 years old. Anyways, I definitely want to get one of those Jolly Green Gasser kit, I’ve always wanted to do another one of those Fords. Hmmm....with that trunk cut out, that would make a good candidate for a Pro Street too...? Hmmm......thanks buddy!

Reminds me of York US 30 Drag Way in 1965, a black 4 speed A/SS 427 Ford from Manheim Ford in Pennsylvania. I was always impressed by it, pure class, no sponsor billboard lettering, not decaled, just a pure stocker. I think Larry Hammer drove it.
    Gassers were 55 Chevy's and 40 Willy's!
They ran the successful car until the 427 Cobra Jet Mustang appeared. Oil problems hindered the Mustang as the Ford factory teams were the only successful 4 speed Cobra Jets while automatics were very competitive for everyone.

Another superb 'retro' build, great to see so many of these old kits being re-released. May I make a respectful suggestion ? - when applying the Tamiya PLW on the grilles use a (new) small chisel edged brush, you'll cover far more evenly, also give the contents a good stir, not just a shake, that'll also help with evening-out the coverage.
Keep up the great work, guys. Very best from New Zealand.

A 65 Galaxie, like this one, would probably have been an A/FX car, with a 427 High Riser. Could be A/Stock without the hood scoop.Very cool build.

Nice to see another reissue of what was argueably one of the best AMT annual kits of the 60's. Originally, a converitble was also offerred - would nice to see that one again! Originally this one may have been 4-in-1, with drag & NASCAR options, which may explain some of the roll cage pieces in this kit - not ususual for drag cars of the era. '65 Galaxie gasser? Not likely back in the day, but today, with "run what'cha brung" bracket racing, anything "just for the fun of it" is a candidate - kindo like Chris' modeling philosophy!

There were a couple of 65s running in B/FX in 65, Mike Schmidt and Bob Glidden both ran one, so not a gasser necessarily, but drag car none the less. Think Some ran the 289 instead of the the big block.

Chris every time the wife walks into the room and catches me watching your vids she shakes her head and asks how much is this going to cost 😜. She doesn’t mind though, it keeps me off the streets! Thanks for all the content you provide.
