- Hello, everyone! Following the first movement ("Ondine") on the last video, now I'm going to present you the second movement of "Gaspard de la Nuit" - "Le Gibet (a gibbet)".¹ I highly recommend you reading a poet of the same name by Aloysius Bertrand while listening the piece.
This movement presents the observer with a view of the desert, where the lone corpse of a hanged man on a gibbet stands out against the horizon, reddened by the setting sun. Meanwhile, a bell tolls from inside the walls of a far-off city, creating the deathly atmosphere that surrounds the observer. The repetitive B flat octaves throughout the entire piece describes the tolling bell.²
The constant atmosphere which "Le Gibet" creates easily makes itself boring, but if you visualize the scene written above while listening the second movemet, you will find yourself mesmerizing into it, and getting goose bumps. As a pianist, it is so difficult to express what I visualized into music, of course.

안녕하세요! 지난주 "물의 요정" 을 뒤이어 오늘은 "교수대" 를 들려드릴건데요. 이 곡은 말 그대로 사형집행에 쓰이던 형구 입니다. 이 곡 또한 베르트랑의 시를 한번 참고하시면서 들어보시길 강력 추천드립니다. 굉장히 창백하고 음산하며, 공포스런 분위기를 선사하는 곡인데, 해질 녘 황량한 벌판에서 교수대에 매달려 죽은 시체와 저 멀리 마을 성채에서 들려오는 종소리가 죽음의 분위기를자아냅니다. 특히 Bb 음이 곡 처음부터 끝까지 계속 유지되는 이 음이 종소리를 표현한 것입니다. 7분동안 끝까지 이런 분위기를 유지하다가 끝마치는 어찌보면 굉장히 지루해지기 쉬운 곡이지만, 눈감고 교수대의 이미지를 상상하면서 몰입해서 들어보신다면 소름돋기 좋은 곡이라고 생각합니다. 물론 그만한 분위기를 만들기가 매우 힘든 곡이여서 연주또한 어려운 감이 없지않아 있었습니다.. 아무튼 오늘의 밤의 가스파르의 두번째곡 "교수대" 였습니다. 다음에는 아시다시피 대망의 "스카르보" 를 준비해오겠습니다. :)

The slow movement is the one that really allows you to drink in the harmonies, which are mind-boggling in their brilliance. The mileage that Ravel gets out of that B♭ pedal is insane.
This piece is so mysterious. The whole set is weird to me, but this one is even more peculiar. The repetitive B-flat with the unnerving melody and all... It's a weird "masterpiece"

Strange but in post USSR schools B-flat actually calls B and B without alteration signs looks like H. So for example B-flat major in other countries but in post USSR countries it's B-dur

Such a haunting piece. The tone of your piano goes very well with it! How would you rate this one in difficulty? It looks easy next to the others but I feel like there's got to be some hidden hurdles
i feel like the hurdles could be less technique but more dynamics and voicing. trying to voice it so it sounds like a ever-so-lasting ringing bell. making it sound the way you want it all comes down to dynamics and voicing with they did a really great job portraying colors and etc at.
It's easier in technical terms than Ondine and Scarbo but still very difficult piece which requires understanding how voicing and musical sound vorks. I can rate that like: Ondine - 7.5, Scarbo - 10, Le Gibet - 5.5.
I think he should record this on a piano with a faster staccato, like one that does not ring at all after released, probably a fazioli

totally agree, i feel like ondine is the "piece of color", le gibet is the "piece of mystery" and scarbo is the "piece of fear" in a sense. ravel made it clear of what emotions he tried to portray in these pieces and mimicing the poems he wrote these after. what a great pianist, both ravel and him

Wow you really did such a great job! I LOVE THIS SOO MUCH! You made it sound so like... idek how to describe it. but you portrayed the poem ravel wrote this after so perfectly. the ominous sound of the ringing bell. i can imagine myself in a scene where i'm in a ghost town in the middle of nowhere and a ringing bell is ringing nonstop, not knowning where it's from. god i love this piece, great job bro!

such a beautiful movement with some of the best harmonies. honestly the piano you have sounds very bright (like mine) and this would benefit from a much darker sound, but you manage to produce that effect with a good use of pedal!

Honestly, you washed away any concerns I had with your growing in piano with both Ondine ans this piece!!!! (I was truly afraid you were not going to pursue the musicality road with your marvelous technique)...on this rendition, each note has a meaning!!!! That's what I'm always looking for as a listener!!!!! Each bell b-flat is played with the perfect tone quality for each mood of the atmosphere...I can almost feel the objects being "alive"....the bell sometimes is "caring" for the hung person on the poem or sometimes being "indifferent", and "distant"...... Alloysius poems in these set (not only the three used by Ravel) gives objects feelings and life as well....you managed to capture that!

라벨곡이 거의 다 음산하지만 이곡이 특히 더 유독 소름끼치고 음산해요;; 교수형에 처해있는 사람의 공포스러움을 잘 녹였다고 해야하나... 그래서 그런지 더 애착가요
