  • Hello, everyone. Finally, I made it. It's time to introduce the long-awaited masterpiece: "Scarbo", the third and the last movement of "Gaspard de la Nuit".
This movement is infamous for its tremendous difficulty (both technically and musically!!), because Maurice Ravel intended this movement to be more difficult than "Islamey" by Mily Balakirev, which was already one of the most difficult piano works. "Scarbo" is a small fiend or goblin that appears in A. Bertrand's poem, who likes nighttime mischief. It makes pirouettes, flits in and out of the darkness, disappears and suddenly reappears.¹ To convey its uneven actions, pianists need to properly understand the poem and the music, and then perform these formidable passages (e.g. repeated notes, major seconds, multiple tuplets) without hesitation. The problem is... the whole procedure is extremely challenging itself.
This concludes the series of "Gaspard de la Nuit". Despite its high level of difficulty, its profound musicality did blow my mind, so I'm willing to perform this work in future recitals.
Thank you for listening, and stay tuned!

    [Translator's comment]
Whoa... Finally, he has uploaded the entire set of "Gaspard de la Nuit", and I believe that this series is the insanest one which he rendered so far.
I was able to meet him in the middle of May 2021 with some other pianophiles and we decided to go to a small piano practice room. Then, he started to perform the first and the third movement of it, and we literally shocked, even though the piece was not enough on an upright piano. We were astonished because of his dramatic and flawless performance (without hesitancy) - I've never gotten goose bumps so bad before!
I don't know whether you guys also got goose bumps while listening to this piece, but personally this is by far the most impressive video that he made. I'm so looking forward to literally get a ticket for Seonyong Hwang's piano solo recital and appreciate his rendering of "Gaspard de la Nuit"!!

Excellent technique. Terrible piano. It's no wonder you couldn't play anything soft on that steel drum. Wouldn't mind hearing you play Scarbo on a decent instrument.

Too fast and zero control of the dynamics. No pianissimos (ppp). All played as fortes. Few people play this right (e.g. Pogorelich or Achucarro).
