    I was a proctor for JLPT 1, at the end of the test I said something like "Test's over, congratulations, I hope everything went fine for you" to cheer the candidates up or something. The stare they gave me said it all, they did NOT had a good time lol !

    OMG. You perfectly described the final section of the listening test! They try to tie the story into knots and make some random change the sequence at the end, then they’ll ask, “what was the second sightseeing spot they visited!?” I passed level 2 a loooong time ago, but didn’t pass level 1. I came back to America and worked for some large Japanese companies for about 10 years. In my experience, having level 2 was always enough to get me through the door in an interview. They’ll usually just have a conversation with you to establish that you’re good enough to work in a Japanese office. Congrats on passing N1. Respect!

    All of my Japanese ability somehow ended up in my listening skills so every time I've taken the JLPT I've had a perfect listening score. Didn't save me the first time I took N2 but it was totally the reason why I passed N1. Everyone: study your weaknesses! But also don't neglect your strengths lol

  • @khyron3
    @khyron3 6 лет назад +341

    It has been 9 years since I passed N2 (2級 back then)- still not sure if I’ll ever sign up for N1! One thing that I remember from that time was that the comprehension and grammar parts were in one section. My advice is to do the grammar questions first! The reason why I say this is because unless you read Japanese often, you may not read as quickly as you think you can! I ran out of time before I got to many of the grammar Q’s, despite feeling super confident with grammar. I didn’t feel like I was having problems with reading, I just wasn’t as quick as I needed to be. The point allocation was higher for grammar compared to comprehension, simply due to the relative number of Q’s. So unless you read really often and have developed good speed, leave the long reading passages until last if there are other shorter questions to answer. Meanwhile every time I go back to Japan I increase my kanji recognition count from ~1200 to about 1700, then over the next year I don’t read any complicated japanese and I forget it all again LOL.

I am still a beginner with kanji and before Kanken I would like to give the jlpt (I know they are two different things). Both have kanji and I don't really know how to study them. Each kanji has 1000 information (number of strokes, readings, meanings, etc.) I want to study them well but I have so many doubts about how to proceed that I am stuck. You passed Jlpt , congratulations. Can you give me some advice for this and for jlpt in general? (Maybe it will be useful for others too). Thank you.

      @HaohmaruHL 6 лет назад +8

      taking anything below N3 is a waste of time and money (do you have spare 60 bucks for a mere try at the test?). I think N3 is bare minimum for doing your japanese things somewhat comfortably. N3 includes tons of daily used grammar and kanji. You really should just keep going until you feel that you are ready to take N2 because that's when things actually matter. Dunno how much it's in usa but here in japan taking the test once costs around 60 bucks. Fuck that. I'd rather buy box of icecream on amazon instead

      After two years of studying Japanese last year I took the N4 in December and to my surprise I passed it with a very good score but as Loretta said I think that for the higher levels I'm going to study until a N2 level and then took N3 because although I practice a lot of grammar and vocabulary. I found the vocabulary too easy, like it was a piece of cake, the grammar easy with some tough stuff but the listening was hella difficult I didn't expect it to be that way, maybe it's because I'm not used to listen to everyday Japanese but it really weighed too much on my final result. Is N3 even a good level to try working in Japan or is it too low? I'll focus on my goal and in the meantime I'm gonna continuing studying hard.

    i passed n4 after 2.5 years of study (hobby style). now i'm prepping for N3 and it's a huge gap. i'm also learning the whole 2300 Kanjis in a batch cause i think it's important as manyyy of the n1 kanjis are used in everyday texts!
    trouble i have is compound kanji words. it makes it so difficult. multiplies the things to learn 100fold

    I'm really glad you mentioned that there were really only 2 main books that you used to study. One discouraging thing is the idea that you need like every book in multiple series to even begin to feel ready. I'm finding that I study better and remember more, plus I feel more confident, when I'm only using a couple of books. Especially because vocabulary and kanji seem to be repetitive in different books for the same level. Not to mention, buying a bunch of workbooks costs a lot!

    The reason for the gap between people who take it and people who sign up is some people sign up for 2 levels and then take the one they think they can pass when the test date comes. My friend signed up for both N2 and N1 but then didn’t study much so he decided to take the N2 when the test date arrived.

    My listening is pretty good because I've learned everything I know from speaking to people, but who knows if it's good enough for JLPT.
    This is why I'm not sure what level I should be taking.

      Take everything from N5-N1, kanji and grammar is hard without a target to aim for, and even after finishing N1 may not enough for fluency in Japanese (I count that as being able to read a decently hard book). Your vocab should really be ahead of the game and that will really help with linking kanji to actual readings. Good luck and Godspeed!

    N1合格おめでとう!I passed my 2 years before... after 12 years studying by myself and failing for 3 times... I failed at the reading exercise ( I was perfect at listening tough) the 3rd time i have failed with 99 points... reading speed was always tremendous until I learned in an 対策講座 for the EJU how to handle them properly just by reading the answer and the scan down what the synonym might be which matches with the answers. first you watch at the end than at the beginning than somewhere in the middle.. always scanning for words like しかし、最も、一番、一方 ect. after these words there might be the answer. btw, you have forget to mention the the n1 special stuff like compare the text or even watch to a prospect and find out which course is the best for Aさん the last listening question is for sure the hardest one.. btw, you could give a hint if your test was 理系 or 文系 because it switches all the time... I was lucky to take the 文系and pass it.. some 理系 tests were horrible for me but easy for the most Chinese or Korean students who are into this stuff. I remember once there were even an math quotation in a test (give me a break) where I was not prepared at all... so for me personal the 文系 stuff was a way easier ... there were even some dialogs between doctors before an op with disease terms like ”蜘蛛膜出血、心筋梗塞” ect...( I knew them because of the cold blue drama) -がっきFTW! however I was very surprised that you have to expand your vocabulary knowledge beyond the books by using dramas, quiz shows ect... with 四字熟語 like 切磋琢磨 or 浅学菲才 which are beyond the N1 level... I know people who are working in japan for years and can not pass it because there are always traps you have to be aware of.. so more studying is always better then less for sure! And of course using more books for one thing is better, some books do not have all expressions you need, so you are obligated to buy another one for e.g. grammar to have a bigger spectrum and a more full one. so, as you are more used to news science research ect. take the 理系 if you are more into conversation and everyday stuff with some economics or might be politics take the 文系... so always to make it easier to pass a person which kind of test was the last one, as they are switching take the jlpt which suits you the most !

    Guys, the thing that worked for me, was to read through "Nihongo Sou Matome" grammar, vocabulary and kanji the last 2 days before the N3. And for the N2, I read the grammar, kanji, vocabulary and reading books the last 3-4 days before N2. Just don't waste time. The first year we got JLPT in our country, I passed the N3, however the next year I failed the N2, because I was being too slow. Just wasted too much time. Eventually, a year later, I got it, so yeah, the next advice from me, is not to get discouraged. This year I'm taking N1.
