Thank you for all of this useful information! I’ve been feeling the burnout recently and feel like I’ve hit a Plateau, I’ll be starting to read on satori reader to help my progress and be able to pass the N4
Hi, Isaac! Variety can be really helpful to combat burnout. If you just can't do another flashcard, for example, try switching to something totally different, like going back to a chapter from a story or dialogue you read before, just to review it. The change of pace is refreshing sometimes, and you almost always discover things you didn't notice the first time too. Also, when I was really studying like crazy, I experienced these waves where sometimes I felt like I could learn anything and other times I felt like nothing would enter my brain. I learned not to try to learn new things during those periods but just to use them as opportunities to review. The important thing is to find a way to work with your brain, and before you know it, you'll be past the plateau and making progress again. 頑張ってください!
@@satorireader you just described what I’m going through so perfectly, I do need to mix things up because the routine I’ve been on has just been exhausting and no longer fun, thank you again for the comment and I will try my best! どうもありがとうございます

Human Japanese is one of the best reading apps I have seen. The text ia well written and fun, the design really agreeable and the language instruction top notch. And you can carry it everywhere you go ! ビデオはありがとうございます
Kindle helped me a lot, there are many books which have furigana for most words - and for those where its missing all it takes is 1 second marking that word and the reading along with translation will appear.
Nice tips! My best friend at France & I are sharing her Satori reader account we got the nice deal! I’m the reader that would read the full sentence or page in kids books & then take every word I don’t know & find the meaning. Then reread it again & figure out what it says in English. Definitely nice addition with the flash cards that Satori has I’m enjoying Mona’s Big Adventure it is challenging as a beginner & the short series of Restaurants, Hotels etc. is nifty as well. Like that the voices in the story don’t sound robotic but actual people speaking!
OMG!! Thank you so much for this video!!! =D I loved it. My JLPT N3 exam got cancelled due to COVID in Argentina, so I'll do my best to pass the N2 exam in July!! Thank you so so much!! PS: I love reading out loud too =D
awesome interview, that proverb is my new mantra, so good! love this guy, been using Human Japanese and the HJ intermediate apps since like 2012/2013 and was so stoked to see advance turn into satori reader and how amazing of an app it is as well, if you haven't tried Human Japanese yet, its amazing and its what really kicked off my learning easy to understand, good for quick snippets of learning, and is cheap with a free version to dip your toes in first.
I'm certain this channel introduced Satori reader to me a few years back?. I haven't used satori reader for a while now (I gotta get back to it!) bc of money reasons, but I am very confident when I say that my progress with Japanese was at its best when I was using satori reader. Language learning is a long journey, but it is always nice to get inspiration, motivation, and tips from your videos. Thank you ~

So many great tips here! Perfect timing too (I was edging towards study burnout 😅) HumanJapanese is my favourite language app, totally worth the purchase (both beginner and intermediate), so cool to see the person behind the app. I need to check out Satori Reader! :)
Hi, T Y! Thanks for the kind words! You might be interested in the explainer videos on the Satori Reader Support channel too. Regarding burnout, check out my reply to Isaac V Cornejo earlier in this thread. The key really is variety, and recognizing the different modes your brain can get into as you are learning. We're working hard to smooth out the ramp for people coming from Human Japanese backgrounds on Satori Reader. Please do check us out and keep an eye out for that Nutshell Grammar series this January!
Oh wow! Thanks so much both, this is fantastic. Was not expecting a reply, but with this kind of support how can I be anything but super motivated 💪💪. l think i was overdoing the flash cards and SRS (which seems like a common cause of burnout) so have mixed things up and already feel so much better 🥳
Don't look up every word you don't know, it will just take all the fun out of reading and you won't remember them all anyway. Focus on frequent words, or words that somehow stand out to you. It will never be your last chance to learn a specific word. And if it really truly is your last time seeing that word, well then you probably don't even need to know that word.
@@kemushichan You know, Loretta, thinking about it more, I don't think your technique and mine are that different. What the process actually looks like for me is, I will often finish the sentence or paragraph before looking up the word(s), and then go back and read it again. So it's kind of a mental underline, a little mental tag on that word. I've just discovered that it's better for me not to get too far ahead before I stop and check, because knowing the meaning of that word will often greatly illuminate what follows. But at the end of the day, I think we're basically doing the same thing. It's just a question of now or later, and I think that just comes down to style and preferences.
zehaha, I totally get how it can feel overwhelming to be looking up too many words. But it's also frustrating when you find yourself at a really important part of the story and you realize you're not exactly sure what's going on. For me, I find reading to be the most satisfying when I'm staying with the author every step of the way, even if it means my progress is a little slower than I might like. This part didn't make it into the video, but I've found that as I've gotten older, my hesitation to look things up has decreased. I no longer feel it to be an impediment to my enjoyment; rather, it's the sunshine that illuminates the rest of the story. Of course, everyone is different and your mileage may vary. Those are just my two cents.
@@kemushichan i am a look up as I go type. Especially when reading manga. I'm currently reading Junji Ito's Uzumaki and the storyline is rlly interesting. So 98% of the time, I'm looking up what I don't know to get extra details. Sometimes if it's too much back to back in one bubble that idk I skip around in the text and try to use context clues.
Signed up yesterday, was checking things out, and I wanted to check out that Nutshell Grammar course. Couldn't remember what it was called, just remembered the description. So I re-listened to end of this episode, and that's when I realized that it's not coming out until January. Le Sigh. I guess it can wait. I'm still working on my Genki 1 textbook, and I'm going through the Human Japanese course, so maybe I'm not ready for the new course anyway. But I'm looking forward to it!
Satori Reader looks really great. I also check (nearly) every word that I don't know hehe. However sometimes I don't check at all. The reason why I check every unknown word is to get familiar with the author's voice, as most authors repeat a lot of vocab and grammar.. Took me 6 years I am finally reading Date A Live in Japanese!
I just want you to know that I’ve followed your journey even when you were in college! I’m from Norfolk, VA and I started learning japanese in high school 2008-2012. Keep up the good work. もちろんまた日本語を勉強してるよ
14:00 - The point about learning from an embarrassing mistake is so true. When I was first starting to learn Japanese, the vice-president of a pretty big company asked me what I was planning to do after the project, and I kludged together a basic sentence something like "I'll eat and sleep for a few days!" but instead of saying 寝る, I said ヌル!So, I ended up saying a poorly constructed sentence that sounded like I was going to go home, eat and then do something sticky -_-
I found this video very helpful! I am currently re-learning Japanese, I hired a tutor and is my dream to speaking fluently again and take the JLPT. I will down satori reader. thank you!
This is so helpful! I am about six weeks into a beginner class in Kyoto, and while I am doing well with all the individual pieces, it's proving hard to see it all come together.
@4:45 interesting learning methods... I never thought to read and come back. I always had to force myself to learn it on the spot. Mainly because I decided to go from 0 - 100 and change my Playstation and games to Japanese. And in order to get through the story and finish it, I kinda had to look it up then and there to progress further. Not recommended for the faint of heart. It's actually brutal. But also, video games so 🤷🏾♂️ worth it.
Wow, it's great that the video game was so motivating to you! Regarding reading in general, whether you do it Loretta's way or look up unknown words on the first pass, either way, it's definitely worth your time to read the material again after you've had a chance to digest the new vocabulary. It is truly amazing how different the experience is the second or third time through.
Yes. If anything, I would say repetition plays a huge factor, as the more often you see and read a few words, the quicker you get used to them, even if they are being used differently. Luckily I happen to run into dialog that does this when going about certain quests and stuff. At least with Satori I can bookmark and save at a specific point and then continue whenever, haha, BIG PLUS. Better than waiting/searching for save points in games.
@@scotthill8975 Ha ha, wow, having to search for a save point...I guess that is one drawback of the video game approach. :-) It sounds like you're doing great with your studies. Thanks for using Satori Reader and keep up the hard work!
I love languages so much, but Im usually so tired when i get back from work that i am usually able to dedicate around 40 minutes midweek after work for languages. I sometimes fantasize about winning the lottery so i can have 2 to 3 years to just learn Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French and Arabic. Last year I wrote my Chinese HSK1, German Goethe C1 and Dutch B2. Thank you for the great videos 毛虫ちゃん (hope thats correct)
Very interesting contract to Tadoku, which famously stated the absolute opposite: just keep on reading, skip what you don't know, capture the overall plot and topic - then return again later. Having tried it, I'm still not quite convinced: my choices seem to be to stay with whatever level of Tadoku I'm at, which gets boring. Alternately, I proceed through the levels - and then go back to some lower level to verify I now know those previously unknown words. Which becomes ridiculous, like verifying your understanding of Shakespeare by going back to See Spot Run. Maybe if there were hundreds of Tadoku stories at every level, but there aren't. I think I'm just going to go for the JLPT5 and then take the plunge into Satori, death before glory! That all said, the more I read about JLPT, including articles and even all the way down to reddits, the less the higher JLPT levels look attractive. If I read one more story about "I passed JLPT1 but I can't understand or speak native Japanese", I'm going to write it all off as a pure money-making venture. I'm totally with you guys about mixing it up - even when it's beyond my current level: Anki cards, then read a book *about* Japanese, then listen to a Japanese audiobook, then watch anime with (Japanese) sub-titles. Doesn't matter what I don't understand: the brilliant thing is the sheer endorphine jolt when you re-watch some anime or listen to an audiobook chapter and suddenly you understand something you didn't before!
Japanese is not my current target language but Satori Reader is AMAZING. I'd love to know if Brian and his team have considered expanding this into other languages? (Politely asks for Persian first... 😍 )
Hi, CandaceP. Thank you for the kind words. Yes, creating versions for other languages is something we've considered. This is something where we'd really need to turn things over to other teams with expertise in other languages and cultures, but as the app and service become more full-featured, I think it's something that will be more and more doable. Thank you for the vote!
I have been studying Japanese for four years, and I still struggle with speaking it. When I studied in Hirakata early this year, I found myself freezing whenever someone would speak to me. It feels good knowing that I am not the only one and that there are new ways to refresh my grammar and learn more.
Hi, Tori. That's completely normal. Everybody gets nervous speaking to a new person in a foreign language! I'm a naturally introverted person and I certainly still feel the jitters sometimes! The only way to get over this is just to do more of it. For me, I used to get really nervous talking on the phone in Japanese. So one day I started to make a point of calling local businesses when I had a question instead of just looking up the answer online. My heart would race as the line was ringing! What if I can't understand them? What if they're really busy and I'm wasting their time? But after a while it got to be easier. You start to feel comfortable with the patterns: how they will answer the phone, how you should get into your question, how you should end the call, and so on. That's the way communication is across the board. It's hard at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. So please don't give up! You can do it!
Tori Carter If you are scared, how about writing or talking to yourself or thinking in your mind? It works. And you won't feel scary to speak with someone. Or you might not have listening skill yet and that makes you to feel scary.
Oh this was so good! I really liked this and I appreciate all the inspiration. I know that if I was back in my earlier days of studying I would have loved this so much! Where was all this cool stuff when I first started... Also I am a huge subscriber of the highlight as I read method (maybe I should switch to a pencil) - I tend to highlight one novel up a LOT, and then while I'm slowly going through that converting them into flashcards, I'll go read books without highlighting. It hurts a bit to leave a word on a page I don't know, but in the spirit of 多読 I just keep reading. But, you have to be reading something interesting to keep your attention :) Any word I skipped over, I definitely will see again and again and I will learn it later is how I think of it :) (also for character names, I write the name in a tiny memo I carry with me everywhere, so I just reference that as I read if I don't remember how to pronounce a character's name...)
Looking up every single word that I don't understand is exactly how I learned English. I switched everything to English (movies, books, wikipedia articles) and just kept at it. It took 3 years, but after that I could speak English fluently!

I just found out about Satori Reader with this video and signed up for an account. I went through the tutorial and so far it looks really cool! I think I'll be giving it some more use. Also, Brian seems like such a kind man. I really enjoyed the video.
Satori Reader has been very helpful for my reading and listening comprehension.
I just love your Chanel I’m learning beginner Japanese and your very inspiring.

Great interview. Satori Reader is bomb.
That new example sentences by grammar point sounds amazing!
you really inspire me to learn fluently and achieve all the goals i have, so thank you! i plan on living there later on in life and you make me feel as im getting closer and closer to my goal everyday ☺️
Your videos have gone to a new level of quality and consistency!! Please keep it up✊🏾
Human Japanese is one of the best reading apps I have seen. The text ia well written and fun, the design really agreeable and the language instruction top notch. And you can carry it everywhere you go ! ビデオはありがとうございます
I can verify Brian is doing a great job answering questions in Satori Reader in a timely and thoroughly helpful manner.
Kindle helped me a lot, there are many books which have furigana for most words - and for those where its missing all it takes is 1 second marking that word and the reading along with translation will appear.
Yessss! I’m so excited for Kona’s big adventure 2!!!
Thanks, Amane! I passed your comment on to the author and she was super excited that _you're_ so excited!
Loreta waking up randomly at 3am and thinking about that one word she wrongly used on that hot afternoon, in the 3rd August of 2013
Wow I got here so early. I love your videos
I love Satori reader!! I was literally using it yesterday and wondering who made the app so this is awesome 😳
Like that the voices in the story don’t sound robotic but actual people speaking!
satori reader is the best i like it. Arigatou. this will help me study japanesw reading.
And OMG I'm helllaaa pumped for this upcoming Nutshel Grammar series, gonna binge study the hell outta these just gimme it
Ha ha, it's coming! The first episode hits on 1/20. Thank you for your enthusiasm! :-)
@@satorireader Thank you for all your hardwork!🙇🙇
Thanks Loreta for the video. I also wanted to say you're the absolute sweetest. I love your bubbly personality :).
And yes, diligent read aloud use of satori reader will push your Japanese level through the roof. Thanks to all its creators.
Thank you, Stephen! I'm glad to hear Satori Reader has been so useful to you!
Can’t wait for the grammar updates
We're working on them furiously! First episode comes out 1/20.
Everything you guys are saying is so true!!! It's literally almost freaking me out!! 😂😂
Thank you ~
Hey Tom! Yeah! Brian was actually here on this channel in person exactly one year ago!
@@kemushichan こんにちはロレッタ さん!Thanks for your comment. I just finished this video and now I'm setting up my subscription again! I think the video I was talking about goes even further back to 2018 actually - when you mentioned watching shows like erased and Terrace House. lol Good times !
Thank you so much for this insightful video!
Learned about Satori Reader in this awesome video and oh boy... My "not reading Japanese because I can't find the right material" was so much solved.
Definitely need to read more.
I study tons of vocab, but if I can't read or properly utilize it then what good does it do?
However I'm still confident I will work my way to proficiency :)
Satori Reader getting my reading sharp right now.
@@emanuelheard3236 I use Satori Reader as well.
Satori is one of the best investments i have ever made
Great resource thank you!
You guys have great smiles
So many great tips here! Perfect timing too (I was edging towards study burnout 😅)
HumanJapanese is my favourite language app, totally worth the purchase (both beginner and intermediate), so cool to see the person behind the app. I need to check out Satori Reader! :)
Nooooo. Don't burnout! Sounds like it's time for some variety 😁
ロレッタさんに感謝しています!ありがとうございます。😊
おっしゃる通りですね、その意見には完全に納得しました。
So dope, we love you Loretta
Don't look up every word you don't know, it will just take all the fun out of reading and you won't remember them all anyway. Focus on frequent words, or words that somehow stand out to you.
It will never be your last chance to learn a specific word. And if it really truly is your last time seeing that word, well then you probably don't even need to know that word.
I'm actually curious to know how many of you are "look up as you go" types and how many are "underline, skip and come back" types?
zehaha
I'm Japanese who learn English. I'd read English sentences with Japanese translation for 1year. And now I look up all of words I don't know.
I didn't know Satori reader. This is gonna help sooo much
Beautiful Teacher thank you very much
satori reader is good.. very good for reading practice
Sooo good!!!! Love this video 🤗
I just want you to know that I’ve followed your journey even when you were in college! I’m from Norfolk, VA and I started learning japanese in high school 2008-2012. Keep up the good work. もちろんまた日本語を勉強してるよ
😭 thank youuu
14:00 - The point about learning from an embarrassing mistake is so true. When I was first starting to learn Japanese, the vice-president of a pretty big company asked me what I was planning to do after the project, and I kludged together a basic sentence something like "I'll eat and sleep for a few days!" but instead of saying 寝る, I said ヌル!So, I ended up saying a poorly constructed sentence that sounded like I was going to go home, eat and then do something sticky -_-
ahhh yes. nothing like the good ol sticky rub down to haunt your dreams hahaha
WOOOF. talk about expert mode!
Indeed. Sometimes pure impatience and willpower can take you places...you probably don't belong yet, but in time. Weird flex, but it seems ok.
Sorry it’s off topic but your mic is SO CRISP I love it 😭❤️
human japanese!!!!!!! i just cant emphasize how AMAZING and wonderful those two apps (HJ & HJ intermediate) are. forever grateful
Thank you so much, fay! It's an honor to know the apps have been useful to you.
I like to listen to books, too when available. It really takes it to the next level for me. ☺️

Loved the vid! Could you make a video on listening tips next? That'd be amazing as my listening skills are way below my reading skills.
Hi
I'm Japanese
Ur Japanese is amazing fluently!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a great video!!
Great , good tips, i have trial of satori already
I'm studying for the N5 JLPT and this video is pretty helpful!

Human Japanese is so underrated. Great stuff!
You're too kind, Senpai. Thank you!
Your editing game is insane!!!!
Good video, Thank you
I have been studying Japanese for four years, and I still struggle with speaking it.
Tori Carter
If you are scared, how about writing or talking to yourself or thinking in your mind?
But, you have to be reading something interesting to keep your attention :) Any word I skipped over, I definitely will see again and again and I will learn it later is how I think of it :)
(also for character names, I write the name in a tiny memo I carry with me everywhere, so I just reference that as I read if I don't remember how to pronounce a character's name...)
Nutshell grammar sounds spectacular! Resubscribed :)
"re" omg where'd you go buddy 😂😂
Thank you, Ian! All these votes for Nutshell Grammar are getting us even more energized than before to really make it killer for you.
