Wow, my favorite tubers together! BTW (9:20-10:00) I so agree with Hitoki-san. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist. I teach people who have forgotten a word to 1) ask their listener for help, 2) describe the word so their listener can guess it, then 3) use that word three times to finish their story. (No “yeah that” or “it”). It’s called “Meaningful Repetition.” Repeating a word aloud three times does little to help you remember it later. But when you use that word three times to finish a story you want to tell, you own that word, and you lock that word into your shared “social memory” with your friend.

  • @EvelynQKelly
    @EvelynQKelly 4 года назад +32

    *Sorry for the lengthy comment*
I have a cringe-y story from my college days, when I was a bushy-haired beginner of Japanese 😂
So, when I first came to JP I was so focused on being polite and *nice* that I ended up giving my classmates and friends the vibe that I was being insincere. For instance: I was playing catch with some of my friends outside and one of my friends completely missed the ball, but I still said... *(Don't judge me y'all)* "ナイスキャッチ なのだ!". I'm pretty sure everyone within listening distance keeled over in laughter. Not only because of the ナイスキャッチ but because なのだ is, like, ya know... **Gestures vaguely in "cringe"** I've come a loooong way since then don't worry 😉
I think the main reason I love these casual chat videos so much is they highlight and showcase that men and women (and enbies/gender non-conforming folks) use 女言葉 and 男言葉 to meet their linguistic needs, much to the contrary of how some of my Japanese textbooks made it seem. That's something that really caught me when I moved here. It sounds silly to me now, of course, but something I think about when I watch this and think back to when I was a beginner. Lovely video! And I'll definitely be subscribing to your awesome chat partner. Hope you enjoy your holidays. Till next video! 😊

That was funny to hear about the kale farming. I've done some WWOOFing in Japan in Shikoku, Shodo Shima, Miyazaki, and the last time in 2016 about a week on a farm in Nagano prefecture. Love it. Can't wait to get back, maybe 2021 will be a new opportunity. I'm so glad to find this channel!
Good job on the collaboration, ひときさんの チャンネルを登録済み。

At first I just kept watching because the cat sat on my lap and I couldn't move, but then you started talking about the pitch accent cult and I just wanna THANK YOU SO MUCH. It feels a bit intimidating how much *stress* people put on it (hehe)... And yes, it's all Dogen's fault. :D

I love Kale too - especially sauteed in olive oil with garlic then simmered in chicken broth til it evaporates then a dash of salt and pepper and red wine vinegar! I found that recipe on food network one day and if you haven't tried it like that, you'll be shocked at how good it is!
But I digress... I couldn't find kale either for months until recently. Is it only seasonally available in Japan?? If so, I'll need you to put me in touch with your kale farmer!!

Loretta, I love your videos for chances to immerse in regular Japanese conversation. May I kindly suggest an investment in a more robust microphone? The echoing of the room really takes away from hearing the nuances of pronunciations I'm trying to pick up, and perhaps I'm not the only one on this. I can do some research and post back on this comment for the sake of not just dumping this request on someone who doesn't owe me anything... Otherwise, truly enjoying this kind of content. Thank you for the love you put into these. 💖

This is amazing I'm intermediate Japanese and so listening to this really helps me study. Is there any way that you could do Japanese and English subtitles so that I could be reading the kanji and learning the Japanese and English translation at the same time? Otherwise I have to listen and then go look in the jisho the words that I do not understand.
thank you so much these collabs are great I can't wait to taste the snacks from the snack box that I order! 😎♥️

I really enjoyed your video, thanks. Hitoki said he cooks a lot, he doesn't make any videos about it?
To be honest, for many years I have been trying to find a book or video about the usual home cooking of the Japanese people, but so far I haven`t found any books in the Kindle or video on RUclips. Such a request is usually answered by popular recipes that everyone already knows, and not everyday homemade food. Maybe searching for words like "料理" was wrong. Maybe there is some special term?

I think what you guys say is true, about not obsessing over trying to learn a native accent in a foreign language. I used to obsess over it, but then I thought about how naturalized citizens in the US (or visitors or non-native people living in the US) don't always speak with a perfect American or British (or Australian or Kiwi or other) accent, and it doesn't make me think less of them or make me not understand them. So, if I admire people who speak English well or fluently as a second (or more) language in spite of a non-native accent, why should I expect for myself to have a native accent when I'm learning a foreign language?
    :)
