    This is the best video i have seen on summarising, i have watched 4 videos on summary and all just said to shorten the the whole paragraph, no one mentioned if we have to add details or not or which details are important so i really understood a lot in your video and i love how you explained with a example, other videos just showed a question, showed their summary and ended the video. Thank you so much!

    Thank you very much for such a helpful video not only for students, but also for teachers: good instructions on the steps to follow how to organize the critical reading and understanding process, dividing the text into separate sections and outlining the content, and finally, only based on the previous steps, the process of writing a summary. I am going to use your video while teaching my students.

    This video was very helpful. I would like to know if the structure with one paragraph could also be used if we would need to sum up longer articles with more pages. Thank you for your help!

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад +3

      Yes you can! The summary length depends on the length and complexity of the original. You could write a longer paragraph (e.g. closer to 1 page) to summarize a longer article, or you could split the summary up into separate paragraphs. When you read the article, separate it into sections. Then make a list on a separate paper of the main points and most important details for each section. If the article has 4 sections, your summary could have 3 paragraphs: 1 paragraph to tell the main idea of the whole article and describe the first section, 1 paragraph to describe the second section, and so on. I hope that helps.

    How can interpretat our opinions in summary to describe our perspective. Thanks for helping write summary

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  11 месяцев назад +1

      Summaries typically do not include your opinion. When we add our opinion to a summary writing, we call that a response. We usually separate the summary and the response, so you could write one paragraph for the summary and one paragraph for your response, where you discuss your opinion.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад

      Yes, you can use the same words if you don't find a good synonym. That is actually an important point -- sometimes if we try too hard to use synonyms, the writing can become awkward, so sometimes it's better to stick with some of the original words, especially if they are key words in the article.

    Can i follow these instructions to write summary of story

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад

      Good question! Yes, you can! For a story, you're going to read the whole thing and take notes while you're reading -- try to make a list of the main events in the plot. When you write your summary, the first sentence can tell what the story is about. Next, mention the setting (when and where the story takes place) and the main characters (don't mention too many characters). Next, explain the main events in the plot.

    I am thinking for a while what are the best sentences to start a summary

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад +1

      Here are some examples:
      In the article "Fear of Flying," Pedro Martinez discusses the reasons that people are afraid of heights.
      In the story "Heaven Hell," author Jhumpa Lahiri explores the difficulties facing one immigrant family after moving to the United States.
      Follow that formula with the article title, author's name, verb in the simple present, and the topic of the article.
      I hope that helps!

    Dear professor, my academic writing is not good enough to paraphrase anything in my own words. Can you please recommend any solutions to improve my writing shortcomings....

      Good question! The most important thing is to build vocabulary so that you can change the words to synonyms that make sense. Second, just practice. Based on your comment, it seems like your writing is strong enough to paraphrase. Try to practice and you will feel more confident soon.

      It's not easy, but I always give my students this tip: What does the writer want you to know? Imagine that you have to explain the article to your grandmother. How can you explain it in an easy, simple way?
