    Somehow, I had gotten to a higher-level writing course in college in which I realized I had poor writing skills. For example, I often wrote a paper the day before it was due having done minimum proof-reading and editing. I felt I was working hard and didn't understand how I would get C or B papers after staying up all night writing 7-15 pages worth of essays. It especially hit hard when my professor gave me the feedback "This is more like a first draft" handing me the essay assignment back with a smile on their face. I wasn't understanding what he was referring to and basically had to learn these skills on my own with minimum help from this professor. It wasn't until I sat down with a great friend and a great writer that I needed to learn to take the time to edit, organize, and mind-map what I wanted to say before drafting my paper. Overall, this video is a great reminder of what it took to write scholarly and more effectively. Thank you!

    This is generally decent advice, I agree with the points about active voice and being concise, but I think the "no repetition" rule comes with some caveats. When students are told to not repeat themselves they tend to reach for a thesaurus to find some obscure synonym of what they are really trying to say. I think there is one rule of academic writing that you do not mention, and that is to pay close attention to verbs. Students like to use verbs like "indicates", "reflects", "notes" to vaguely gesture at an idea without having to precisely state it, or just because they think "indicates" is somehow more academic than "says". I also don't think there is anything inherently wrong with occasionally using "also" to relieve some of the weightiness of a word like "furthermore".
    More generally, students should be encouraged above all else to be conscious of, and empathic to, the reader. Convey ideas efficiently, don't dress them up, find the most precise language to express what you want to say (and "precise" does not always mean "simple", a difficult concept may require novel uses of language to be expressed fully). Pretend your reader is there with you as you write, and you are trying to convince them of the validity of what you say as best as you can.

      Everything here comes with caveats. I thought that was just understood. Every rule or tip in English has exceptions. Passive Voice for example. It has many uses, but is not as powerful normally as Active Voice. He's making a brief video with basic tips; it's not going to be hours long and cover every possible caveat.

    • @L4ND.SH4RK
      @L4ND.SH4RK Год назад +1

      "Indicates" is more academic than, "says". ex: My history teacher says the Salem Witch Trials were started by some bored little girls. OR: Written documents indicate that a slave had told some stories of voodoo to some little girls and which sparked the Salem Witch Trials. It is not just the one word that is different, but that word changes the attitude which changes the other words.

    • @kiyoaki1985
      @kiyoaki1985 Год назад

      @@L4ND.SH4RK The examples you're using here are different though: your first example is a person saying something, the second is of multiple documents, which can't really collectively "say" anything without sounding awkward.
      "Researcher so and so says that X happened" is not wrong, or "unacademic". I'm also a fan of "claims", but I dislike "indicates" because of its vague modality.

    I agree with working within the constraints of one's vocabulary to improve it. Moderation in using a thesaurus will improve vocabulary. But doing this a lot becomes obvious and canned, therefore dull. I agree with the MC; it does not show intelligence and is a cheap attempt at showing intelligence, almost condescending. Vocabulary sensitivity should also be considered. This will widen the writer's audience.
    "Also" is on the cutting edge of the formal vs. informal borderline. To me, "also" is weak, shows inexperience, and that one has more questions than answers. It does show interest but in an indirect way. I agree with the MC about not using it and, at best ~ sparingly.

    "I woke up late.................................,so I ran out the door and jumped in my car."In this piece of writiing,the subject "I" is repeated many times-8 times.Is repetition like this necessay ?.Instead,can we change it into as follows:"Waking up late this morning, I immediately went to the kitchen and made myself a cup of coffee. After finished my coffe, I got ready for work. Looking at my watch, I found myself late, so I ran out the door and jumped in the car."It seems to sound smoother and more pleasant to the ear.

      If I may advise, I would suggest you learn as much as you can about academic writing before you start your course, If possible, check what assignments are planned for your course (essays/ presentations/ reports, etc.) so you are prepared and then you will already know HOW to write it and will only need to worry about WHAT to write, the topic, when you need to tackle your academic assignment.

    Thank you so much for these vital tips. I really want to improve my formal writing, especially focusing on sentence flow. My problem is I have to mention laws signed by a person, and I often am stuck in repeatedly starting separate sentences with "On May 1, 2010, Donald signed a law creating a task force ...". Do you have any tips on how to improve the linking of these sentences into a single coherent paragraph and avoid repeated use of the sentence structure "On , signed a law ..."?
