Great question! I don’t think you should worry about using academic vocabulary in your writing too much because the most important thing with writing is that you have a good, interesting argument with strong ideas to support your argument, and the organization of your writing is clear. That means a clearly organized essay with clear sentences. Using academic vocabulary is just a bonus, and sometimes people try to hard to use fancy vocabulary, which can make their writing sound strange. The best way to improve your academic vocabulary is to read and to learn the academic word list. Do you know about the academic word list? You can Google it and find it online. Those are the most common words that are used in academic English.

Sometimes paraphrasing the prompt in the introduction looks like lazy writing, and for that reason. teachers or others who evaluate writing don't like when the prompt is repeated or paraphrased in the introduction. However, usually the thesis statement has some words from the prompt in it. I have a couple of videos on thesis statements that might be helpful.

I should have just married an English teacher 😂 Writing is so tough for me I decided to go back to college at 37 and I'm definitely out of touch with writing papers.
Don't worry, it gets easier with time and practice! I have had many students in their 50s, 60s, even 70s who learn to write essays. I think it's helpful to look at good example essays and think about what makes them clear.
37 ?? I'm 43 and I failed my first english class. The next semester I Withdrew from the class. It's going to be hard for me to write an good essay. But im willing to give it a try

Good question. Definition essays can be tricky. Hopefully you have already brainstormed ideas and made an outline to help you see your overall organization. Now, look at the ideas that you will talk about in your body paragraphs. What is the overall idea? For example, do you explain a word in different ways? Do you show that the word is difficult to define? You can make a thesis based on that: While X is an important concept, it can be difficult to define. or X can be defined by looking at it from three different perspectives. Hopefully those examples give you some ideas of how to proceed. Good luck!

Good question! Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. The first step is to take the question or assignment that your teacher gave you and sit down with a piece of paper. Brainstorm ideas. Write down every idea that you have for at least 10 minutes. Remember that the most important thing is to answer the question that your teacher gave you. After you know what ideas you will take about, you need to make a thesis statement and start writing your paragraphs. Remember that all your paragraphs must be connected to your thesis statement. I don't understand your last question, but the second sentence is not correct. In most cases, we don't use an article with a gerund.
