      Not sure but it sounds like you need to write a short argumentative piece. Try to think about what your readers already know and what information would help them agree with you.

    When I talk about advangtages, can I use 'upside' ? Do you recommend ?

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад +1

      Yes, you can use 'upside'! I didn't mention it in the video because it's not as common as the other synonyms that I included.
      We use it more in speaking and not as much in writing.

      @@LearnAcademicEnglish 'downside' is common in writing though?

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад

      @@tychen1978 Yes. Upsides and downsides are a bit more informal than the other words, but I feel like I see the word downsides more often than upsides. We can use them in writing but as I said, they are a bit more informal than the other words.

    Hi dear professor, "The decline of in-person movie attendance has led to the closing down of many theaters." I think it's a verbal noun, but the structure is "lead to+noun" and "lead to+gerund" as well as "close down" is a noun and a verb. I looked it up in various dictionaries. I didn't find any word related to "closing down". It should be written like this "......has led to the close down of many theaters." Could you make me understand this structure.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад +1

      In my opinion, this structure is expected because I think it's lead to + gerund. To close down is a phrasal verb, so "the closing down" is a gerund. It is not common to use the article 'the' before a gerund, but it can occur in some situations when it's referring to something specific.
